Donald Trump reiterated his ultimatum that Iran agree to a ceasefire deal and a fully reopened Strait of Hormuz or face another military escalation. Yesterday, the US president said he wasn’t concerned about potentially committing war crimes as he promised to destroy Iran’s civilian infrastructure, arguably in violation of international law. On Tuesday, Trump went even further, pledging that “ a whole civilization will die tonight .” While Trump has repeatedly failed to follow through on many of his late-night social media posts, today’s apocalyptic warning managed to trigger fears in some quarters about nuclear weapons (which the White House reportedly denied ). As this all played out on cable news chyrons, the US and Israel continued to bomb Iran, striking its oil-export hub on Kharg Island while the Islamic Republic fired missiles at US allies across the Persian Gulf. Trump has threatened to destroy Iranian power plants, bridges and other civilian infrastructure if there’s no deal by 8 pm Eastern Time. Speaking in Budapest where he was campaigning on behalf of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban , US Vice President JD Vance said he was confident Iran will issue a response by then. Iranian officials, however, responded to Trump’s threat by breaking off talks while reportedly telling the United Nations they were still open to negotiations . Then late in the day, Pakistan urged a two-week delay of the US deadline. Some observers see the US military in an increasingly untenable position as far as any White House-acceptable off-ramp is concerned, making this a critical juncture in a conflict that’s already killed thousands of people. With more energy infrastructure damaged as every day goes by and oil prices hitting record highs , political pressure is building as well.
