The report said total spending on video games, content, and hardware this year is going to shatter the current all-time high of $61.7B set in 2021. "This growth is expected to be fueled by the second year of Nintendo Switch 2, unprecedented anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, and continued strength in subscription‑based content," said Circana's Mat Piscatella, the video game industry advisor at the research firm. Piscatella noted that Take Two's ( TTWO ) GTA VI holds "the highest purchase intent" ever recorded in the research firm's tracking history and could boost hardware, accessories, and subscription demand this year. Assuming tariffs or other factors that raise costs, Circana estimates about 38% of consumers would purchase fewer full-price games at launch, about 34% would wait longer for video games to be on sale, and 27% would spend more time playing free-to-play games. On hardware, Piscatella warned that the segment is expected to face headwinds this year as surging costs for RAM, GPUs, CPUs, and storage—driven by AI data center demand—could limit hardware availability and also raise their prices.
