I thought that the laggards would have been real estate ( XLRE ) and, yes, energy ( XLE ). You might call me mad, but back in December, the data showed that inventories were accumulating while oil prices were low, and we were hearing talks about companies in the Permian reducing their output because they were below their break-even point. Then, two shocks came: Venezuela and, most importantly, Iran. This was unpredictable at the time. However, I have jotted down some notes, filing them for future use: when oil inventories rise in a world where geopolitical conflicts are high, it might be a sign that a war is being prepared. As for the rest, it is true that utilities and industrials outperformed the market, but so did real estate, although YTD it has generated a slightly negative total return. Data by YCharts As we can see, trying to figure out what will happen is extremely difficult, and this is why my investing philosophy focuses on trying to understand the macroeconomic environment but not to barely bet on secular trends. I want to select specific companies whose likelihood of success is extremely high, even though they might have to go through difficult environments (this is why, just to name one of my core holdings, I am actively buying Ferrari: demand will always be there). With this in mind, I recently read a thought-provoking article by Sir Niall Ferguson explaining why a recession is coming. Although I am not fond of calling recessions (sooner or later, one gets it right), I think there are a few economic facts that Ferguson outlined that are worthy of some consideration as we think about how Q2 could unfold. Remember, none of us has a crystal ball, but these forward-looking exercises can be useful means...

OpenAI's decision last week to shut down Sora, its AI video-generation tool, just six months after releasing it to the public raised immediate suspicions. The app had invited users to upload their own faces — so was this some kind of elaborate data grab?
