"You can never be too rich or too thin." The famous quote has been attributed to the two-time American divorcee and Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, although a few others have also been given credit for the line or something close to it. Doctors might suggest that a person can indeed be "too thin," and, in the context of investing, securities may occasionally be a bit "too rich." Examining the performance of different sectors since the beginning of the year, a couple really stand out. The energy sector is up ~19% so far this year; regional banks and materials are up ~13.6%; and consumer staples and industrials are also up double digits. In general, it is healthy for equity market performance to broaden as it has done from technology stocks to these other sectors — and from the megacaps to small(er) companies as evidenced by the Russell 2000 outperforming the S & P 500 so far this year. However, stocks don't go up in a straight line. They can be oversold or a bit extended in the short-term. Such may be the case right now in materials. Since Oct. 7, 1999, the average 30-day price change in the State Street Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB) has been ~55 basis points (0.55%). Here's a histogram of those results, with the column that includes the mean return highlighted in blue. But the picture changes meaningfully when XLB gets extended above its own 200-day moving average. Right now, XLB is in the top decile relative to the 200-day moving average. The histogram for the top decile by this metric looks remarkably different, again with the mean return, now -0.22% highlighted in blue. Selling covered calls on XLB can make sense when two conditions line up: first, the price is stretched as we see now, and second, if option premiums are unusually rich. Right now, 1-2 month implied volatility is ~1.7 standard deviations above its 2-year mean. When an ETF trades far above its longer-term moving averages, it doesn't guarantee a decline — the histogram above illustrates ...

The Arms Race In The Indo-Pacific Is Just Getting Started As Participants Pick Sides By Benjamin Picton, senior market strategist at Rabobank US stocks rallied hard on Friday and the VIX index had its biggest one-day fall since April of last year. The rally broke three-straight days of losses where crypto was dumped and two-year Treasury bonds had tightened 19bps. Yields on two-year US treasuries rose almost 5bps on Friday to 3.50% in the broader risk-on rally. Prime Minister Takaichi has won a landslide victory in Japan’s general election over the weekend. Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party now has a two-thirds supermajority in the lower house of the Diet, granting it the power to override the upper house. The Nikkei is up 4.7% today and 12.9% YTD, trailing only the KOSPI among major Asian indices. Asian equity markets are mostly outperforming counterparts in Europe and the United States this year. The so-called ‘Takaichi-trade’ has seen Japanese equities well bid in reaction to Takaichi’s predilection for looser fiscal settings, greater investments in technology and defence, and pressure on the Bank of Japan not to raise interest rates too quickly. Despite this cocktail of accommodative policy, USDJPY is dealing a little softer as Finance Minister Katayama indicated that she had been in close contact with US Treasury Secretary Bessent regarding stabilisation of the exchange rate . Katayama also said that she is prepared to take measures to stabilize markets today if necessary. 10-year JGBs are underperforming, with yields up 4.9bps on the day and the 2s10s curve steepening ~3bps. Beyond the immediate implications for JGBs, the Japanese Yen and – by extension – the Yen carry trade, this is a momentous development geopolitically. Takaichi is a China hawk who sparked something of a diplomatic crisis late last year when she suggested that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan could be considered existential for Japan. That would be sufficient to justify intervention by the Ja...

RealPeopleGroup/iStock via Getty Images Lyft ( LYFT ) officially launched Lyft Teen on its ride-sharing platform Monday, joining teenagers' desire for independence with parents’ need for security, capitalizing on the convenience and affordability of ride-sharing. Children between the ages of 13 and 17 can request rides while parents can monitor their child’s route, communicate with the Lyft driver, and employ PIN security to verify the driver. Additionally, Lyft ( LYFT ) ensures that drivers who provide teen rides meet the company’s highest standards with annual background checks, safe driving records, and positive passenger feedback. To drive home the affordability and convenience of ride-sharing, Lyft ( LYFT ) highlights the true cost associated with a teen driver, including higher insurance rates, time spent shuttling children to and from activities (~8 full days per year), added cost of providing a separate vehicle, and increased fatality rate associated with teen car accidents. Additionally, with fewer teens opting for a driver’s license (25% in 2026 vs. 50% in 2000), ride-sharing is positioned as a “considered choice that works better for their lives.” The service mirrors Uber for teens ( UBER ) that provides ride-sharing and delivery services for children between 13 and 17 years old. Uber ( UBER ) launched its teen accounts feature in May 2023. Lyft Teen launches today in over 200 major markets, including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington DC, and Miami, with more markets coming throughout 2026. Lyft ( LYFT ) shares are up nearly 2% on Monday, while Uber ( UBER ) is trading marginally lower. More on Lyft Lyft: With Enormous FCF Growth, The Rally Is Just Getting Started Lyft, Inc. Discord is rolling out age verification globally starting next month, the company announced on Monday. All users will be put into a “teen-appropriate experience” by default unless they prove they’re adults. Age verification will be required to change certain settings and access age-restricted content. Discord users will need to be confirmed as adults in order to unblur sensitive content or turn off the setting, and only adults can access age-restricted channels, servers, and app commands. Additionally, messages from people a user may not know are routed to a separate inbox by default, and only verified adults can modify this setting. People will receive warning prompts for friend requests from users they may not know, and only adults will be able speak on stage in servers. To complete age verification, users need to either complete a facial age estimation or submit an ID to Discord’s vendor partners. The platform plans to add more options in the future. Discord notes that some users may be asked to use multiple methods when additional information is needed to assign an age group. The facial age estimation requires video selfies, which Discord says never leave your device. Additionally, the company says IDs submitted to its vendor partners are deleted quickly, and in most cases, immediately after age confirmation. “Rolling out teen-by-default settings globally builds on Discord’s existing safety architecture, giving teens strong protections while allowing verified adults flexibility,” said Savannah Badalich, head of product policy at Discord, in a press release. “We design our products with teen safety principles at the core and will continue working with safety experts, policymakers, and Discord users to support meaningful, long term wellbeing for teens on the platform.” Discord’s global launch of age verification follows the company’s decision to establish age checks for users in the U.K. and Australia last year. Hong Kong’s High Court jailed former media boss Jimmy Lai Chee-ying to 20 years on Monday for national security crimes, in what mainland Chinese authorities described as a “powerful declaration” that severe punishment awaited those who dared to challenge the law. In the toughest punishment to date under the city’s national security law, Lai is set to spend the rest of his life behind bars after being found guilty earlier on two conspiracy counts of collusion with foreign forces and a third of conspiracy to print and distribute seditious articles. Lai, 78, who used his now-defunct Apple Daily tabloid-style newspaper and network of international contacts to push for sanctions against the local and central governments, will be 96 by the time of his earliest possible release in 2044. Advertisement Six former senior executives at Apple Daily received sentences of six years and nine months to 10 years, while two activists were jailed for up to seven years and three months. The three High Court judges handling the case at West Kowloon Court also imposed fines totalling more than HK$9 million (US$1.15 million) on three companies responsible for the newspaper’s operations. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said Lai’s punishment for “heinous” and “evil” crimes was “supported by overwhelming evidence, and he for sure deserves his punishment after all the harm he has done”.
