After walking back guidance last quarter, could this animal health company reveal surprises come earnings day? Zoetis (ZTS +0.54%) tanked after its November earnings release. Will history repeat itself pre-market on Feb. 12, when the animal healthcare company releases results for the fourth quarter of 2025? That's the question on the minds of many investors, less than a week before its earnings report hits the street. Whether the stock rallies after earnings or falls further afterward may depend on how closely the guidance updates align with current expectations. Fortunately for Zoetis, with expectations already walked back last quarter, it may not take much to surprise investors positively, leading to a bullish response. That said, if you are approaching this stock as a possible long-term investment, you likely do not need to leap into a Zoetis position today. Shares may have more room to fall before bottoming out. Zoetis earnings preview Zoetis is scheduled to post earnings for the fourth quarter and full year 2025 on Feb. 12. The latest sell-side forecasts call for $2.36 billion in revenue and earnings of around $1.40 per share. This represents year-over-year revenue growth of 1.9% and flat earnings. That said, in each of the last four quarters, Zoetis has beaten on earnings. After last quarter's lackluster guidance, walked-back expectations could set the stage for an even greater earnings beat, and perhaps even a revenue beat. The company's Q3 2025 top line fell slightly short of expectations. Japan's Takaichi to pursue conservative agenda after election landslide toggle caption Keisuke Hosojima/Kyodo News/AP SEOUL — Japan's first female Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, brought the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) its biggest electoral victory in its 71-year history, fueling her ambitions to pursue to a political agenda which she herself says could "split public opinion." The snap elections for the lower house of parliament were held despite the shortest campaign period in post-war history, and massive snowstorms across much of Japan. Benefitting from Takaichi's popularity, the LDP won a two-thirds majority in the lower house, enough to override vetoes by the opposition-controlled upper house. It would also allow the LDP to initiate amendments to Japan's pacifist constitution, which the party has sought to revise since its founding in 1955, and Takaichi said she would pave the way for an eventual referendum on the issue. Sponsor Message It's the first time in the post-war era that any single Japanese party has won a supermajority in the lower house. An unprecedented 90% of candidates fielded by the LDP won. Charismatic Japanese leaders, including Takaichi's mentor former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, have helped the LDP stage comebacks before. It's a feature of Japan's politics, which RAND Corporation Japan expert Jeffrey Hornung says "are always very personalistic. People always look to the leader, not so much the party." Japan's Nikkei stock index jumped to a record high, bond yields went up, and Japan's currency the Yen went down, in anticipation of Takaichi's stimulus spending and tax cuts. Questions and criticisms remain about how Takaichi will pay for these priorities, given that Japan's government debt is more than 200% of GDP. But Takaichi apparently feels her mandate will empower her to sweep aside obstacles. "We have advocated policies facing significant opposition," Takaichi said at LDP headquarters, "including a major shift in economic and fi...

The head of the International Monetary Fund downplayed the dollar’s decline over the past year, saying the US currency will probably retain its preeminent position. “We should not get carried away by short term variations of the exchange rate,” the IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in an interview on Monday with Bloomberg Television. “I don’t see a change in the role of the dollar anytime soon.” People “should look closely to why the dollar plays such an important role in the international monetary system,” she said, citing “the depth and liquidity of capital markets in the United States, the size of the economy and the entrepreneurial spirit of the US.” Georgieva, echoing comments she’s made in the past year, spoke at an IMF conference on emerging markets in Al-Ula , Saudi Arabia. The Bloomberg dollar index , which tracks the greenback against a basket of 10 other leading currencies, fell 8.1% last year, the most since 2017. It’s declined another 1.3% this year as the Trump administration’s tariffs and the US government’s weakening fiscal position fuel concern among global investors. On Monday, Bloomberg reported that Chinese regulators have advised financial institutions to rein in their holdings of US Treasuries , citing concerns over concentration risks and market volatility. China Urges Banks to Curb US Treasuries Exposure on Market Risk Dollar’s ‘Relentless’ Slide Has Traders Bracing for More Pain Trump Is Driving Off Investors and Imperiling Dollar’s Reign Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last week that the US “always has a strong dollar policy,” and that authorities hadn’t intervened to drive the greenback down. His comments came shortly after Trump was asked if he was worried about the dollar’s depreciation, with the president answering: “No, I think it’s great .” Georgieva said a weaker dollar can be “good” for many emerging markets because it eases their interest payments on foreign debt. “Those that borrow in the greenback will pay les...
Another win, and if England emerged from the Wankhede after Sunday’s fraught victory over Nepal without much of a strut to their step, they did so with two points in their pockets and the bandwagon still rolling. Another win, and if England emerged from the Wankhede after Sunday’s fraught victory over Nepal without much of a strut to their step, they did so with two points in their pockets and the bandwagon still rolling. They have now won 11 of their 12 completed T20s in the last year, and in their last two games have been reminded that winning ugly can be more powerful than winning easy. “I wouldn’t have wanted it to be as close as it was to be honest,” said Jacob Bethell. “But this is my first World Cup. Watching previous World Cups you want to get those little tricky games, to get a feel for them and just know you’ve got the confidence to get over the line in them. I think it’s not going to do us any harm to go through that.” It was a superficially underwhelming display, in which some of the team’s most reliable performers – most notably Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer – struggled. But now there will be more confidence that even when the stars fail to shine, others will step up. And though England are still a long way from even thinking about winning this tournament, they also know that edging such encounters can be the mark of a champion. It is rare for any team to win a World Cup without coming through at least one such game. The 2024 champions India looked to be on their way to defeat by Pakistan in their second match before Jasprit Bumrah conceded just three in its penultimate over. In 2022 England found themselves with no margin for error after losing a rain-affected game to Ireland and, in their final group match, edged past Sri Lanka with two balls to spare. In 2021 Australia needed only 119 to beat South Africa in their first game, and managed it again with two balls remaining. It had been notable that, in the days before their World Cup campaign got under way, the one game of their recent run that England kept referring to was not the 146-run walloping of South Africa in Manchester last September, or the stroll to victory over Ireland in Malahide with six wickets a...
