As the Year of the Horse approaches, Chinese consumers are hunting online for mascots, dolls and charms themed after the zodiac animal – a pursuit industry observers say favours soft, round and playful designs over formal styles and places more weight on emotional fulfilment than material possessions or brand prestige. This craze is boosting retail sales for plush toys and gold accessories, as is evident in toymaker Pop Mart’s sold-out Have a Good Run series of plush pendants, as well as brisk sales of domestic jeweller Chow Tai Seng’s enamel Tang Horse collections. Since the jewellery brand launched the series in early January, its sales have surpassed 6 million yuan (US$864,600), according to data from Alibaba Group Holding’s e-commerce platforms Taobao and Tmall. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post. Advertisement “We see that a product’s ability to forge an emotional connection with Chinese consumers is increasingly shaping purchasing decisions,” said Maggie Xie, an analyst at S&P Global Ratings, in a report issued by the credit rating agency last week. “Chinese consumers’ brand loyalty is waning, and the perceived quality gap between brands in the same category is also narrowing. To win over cautious shoppers, product makers are embedding emotional value into their offerings to boost desirability.” Pet retailer Popocola sold 1,000 units of a festival-themed vest for dogs in 30 days. Eli Lilly is the leader in the GLP-1 space, but here's another GLP-1 stock and a medical device maker to consider. Eli Lilly's (LLY +3.53%) stock has risen 225% over the past three years. That trounces the S&P 500's (^GSPC +1.97%) gain of 66% over the same span. If you weren't on board for that ride, you may not want to chase after Eli Lilly, given its lofty 49 price-to-earnings ratio. GLP-1 competitor Novo Nordisk (NVO +10.01%) and medical device maker Medtronic (MDT 0.02%) could be interesting alternatives. Here's why. Novo Nordisk stumbles into 2026 Novo Nordisk was the first to market with a GLP-1 weight-loss drug. Eli Lilly's GLP-1 offerings were better received by consumers, giving it the edge in this exciting new drug category. However, Novo Nordisk is again leading the way, as it was first to market with a GLP-1 pill. Consumer uptake of the pill was faster than management expected, as well as faster than the company's earlier GLP-1 offerings. The long-term opportunity here is volume, as more and more people take GLP-1 drugs. That said, Wall Street punished Novo Nordisk's stock because of Eli Lilly's success in the GLP-1 space. With the stock down some 66% from its 2024 highs, there's material turnaround appeal in Novo Nordisk's stock if you're willing to take a long-term view. Indeed, the company has warned that earnings in 2026 will be weak but that strong demand for GLP-1 pills will be a long-term growth driver. Key Points Spousal benefits have some unique rules about claiming age and eligibility. You could be eligible for up to half your spouse's Social Security benefit. Understanding how your benefits could change as a couple could help you maximize retirement income. The $23,760 Social Security bonus most retirees completely overlook › Social Security spousal benefits can be a great boon for retirement planning among couples for whom one partner spent more time out of the workforce or doesn't have a traditional earnings record for another reason. More than 2 million people collected spousal retirement benefits in January. If you qualify, you can claim up to 50% of your partner's benefit at full retirement age, replacing your personal benefit. But couples expecting to claim spousal benefits need to be aware of some very important rules before they start their retirement planning. Here are five everyone should know. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now, when you join Stock Advisor. See the stocks » 1. You can't receive spousal benefits if your spouse isn't receiving benefits A key prerequisite to receiving spousal benefits is that your spouse must be actively collecting benefits already. That can be a challenge for couples with a big age gap or when one spouse is delaying benefits significantly longer than the other spouse. The rule also means if your spouse suspends benefits, you'll no longer qualify for spousal benefits. If you qualify for personal retirement benefits under your own earnings record, you'll receive that amount. Otherwise, you'll receive no benefit at all. If your spouse is already collecting benefits before you apply, you must apply for spousal benefits at the same time as you apply for your personal benefits. You can't collect one benefit while delaying the other. Social Security will simply pay you whichever benefit is the greater amount. 2. There's one big exception t...

The modern Olympics sell themselves on a simple premise: the whole world, watching the same moment, at the same time. On Friday night in Milan, that illusion fractured in real time. When Team USA entered the San Siro during the parade of nations, the speed skater Erin Jackson led the delegation into a wall of cheers. Moments later, when cameras cut to US vice-president JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance, large sections of the crowd responded with boos. Not subtle ones, but audible and sustained ones. Canadian viewers heard them. Journalists seated in the press tribunes in the upper deck, myself included, clearly heard them. But as I quickly realized from a groupchat with friends back home, American viewers watching NBC did not. On its own, that editorial decision might once have passed unnoticed. But the defining feature of the modern sports media landscape is that no single broadcaster controls the moment any more. CBC carried it. The BBC liveblogged it. Fans clipped it. Within minutes, multiple versions of the same happening were circulating online – some with boos, some without – turning what might once have been a routine production call into a case study in information asymmetry. It is becoming harder, not easier, to curate reality when the rest of the world is holding up its own camera angles. And that raises an uncomfortable question as the United States moves toward hosting two of the largest sporting events on the planet: the 2026 men’s World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. If a US administration figure is booed at the Olympics in Los Angeles, or a World Cup match in New Jersey or Dallas, will American domestic broadcasts simply mute or avoid mentioning the crowd audio? If so, what happens when the world feed, or a foreign broadcaster, shows something else entirely? What happens when 40,000 phones in the stadium upload their own version in real time? The risk is not just that viewers will see through it. It is that attempts to manage the narrative w...

Ukrainian president says US has invited Ukraine and Russia to more talks next week. What we know on day 1,446 Volodymyr Zelenskyy has hinted that a new June deadline from the US for peace between Ukraine and Russia could be linked to Trump’s midterm elections campaign. The Ukrainian president on Saturday told reporters that both sides had been invited to further talks next week. Zelenskyy said the Trump administration “will probably put pressure” on Ukraine and Russia to end the war by the beginning of the summer. “They say they want to get everything done by June,” he said. He told reporters the Trump administration was proposing to host the next round of trilateral talks in the US, probably in Miami, in a week’s time. “We confirmed our participation,” he said. “The [midterm] elections are definitely more important for them [the Americans]. Let’s not be naive.” He added: “If the Russians are really ready to end the war, then it is really important to set a deadline.” US and Ukrainian negotiators had discussed how to secure a quick deal , according to sources familiar with the matter quoted by Reuters. Ukraine had suggested a sequencing plan, Zelenskyy said, but he provided no specific details. The Ukrainian president has also criticised Russia for an overnight attack on Ukrainian energy facilities areas, saying in comments posted on X that Moscow must be deprived of the ability to use the cold winter weather as leverage against Kyiv. A “massive attack” by Russian forces on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Saturday caused power outages across the country, the state grid operator said. There are clear signs the Russian economy is finally running aground , as the Kremlin faces its most precarious economic position since its tanks first rolled into Ukraine. Growth has slowed to a crawl amid falling oil prices – a key source of government revenue. Russians face tax hikes while funding for welfare, education and healthcare is being crowded out by defence spending. Trad...

Thais began voting on Sunday in an election pitting the reformist People’s Party against the conservative Bhumjaithai Party, with expectations of a tight race among a divided public craving an end to the country’s long economic drift and political instability. Around 53 million Thais are eligible to vote for 500 lower house lawmakers, 400 directly from their constituencies and the remaining 100 decided on a proportional basis from the number of votes each party gets. Barring a shock landslide for the People’s Party, experts say neither leading party will win a majority on their own, resulting in a coalition government. Advertisement That will mean days of post-poll horse-trading likely lie ahead to see who can stitch together alliances from smaller factions to reach a 251 majority of the 500 lower house seats. The progressive youth-facing People’s Party, led by former tech executive Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, 38, is tipped to win the most votes and seats. Advertisement But that does not mean it will be allowed to form a government, with Bhumjaithai well placed to block its route to power with its own coalition.
