Jinda Noipho/iStock via Getty Images U.S. consumers' outlook for inflation ticked down for the year ahead but remained at 3% or above for the next five years, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's May 2026 Survey of Consumer Expectations released on Monday. Meanwhile, their expectations for the labor market, credit access, and household finances deteriorated. Median inflation expectations for the one-year time horizon edged down 0.1 percentage point to 3.5%. Median expectations were unchanged at 3.1% for the three-year horizon and at 3.0% at the five-year timeframe. Moreover, uncertainty regarding future inflation outcomes rose at the one-year and three-year horizons and decreased at the five-year horizon. Home price growth is expected to outpace inflation. Median home price growth expectations increased by 0.5% pps to 3.5%, the highest reading since July 2022. If that expectation materializes, it would mark an acceleration from the recent slowing of home price growth . In the labor market, the mean perceived probability of losing one's job in the next 12 months climbed by 0.5 pp to 15.1%, above the series' 12-month trailing average of 14.4%. Meanwhile, the outlook for the quitting rate surged as the mean probability of leaving one's job voluntarily jumped 2.6 pp to 20.8%, its highest level since February 2023. The mean perceived probability of finding a job if one's current job was lost dropped by 2.3 pp to 43.7%, below the 12-month trailing average of 46.8% and its lowest point since December 2025. Even though expectations for spending growth declined, the pace of spending continued to outpace the expectations for household income growth, which held steady. The median growth in household income stayed at 2.8% in May. Meanwhile, the median expectation for nominal spending in the year ahead decreased by 0.4 pp to 5.0%, still slightly higher than the trailing 12-month average of 4.9%. With the continued pressure on household finances, consumers see a hi...
