Shale drillers engaged in record hedging amid soaring energy prices in the days and weeks preceding the worldwide commodities crash. AEGIS Hedging Solutions LLC, which conducts trades that cover about one-fourth of US oil and natural gas production, saw its busiest week for gas as the polar vortex sent demand and prices for the fuel sky high. As for crude, AEGIS clocked its biggest month since mid-2025, during the height of the Iran-Israel conflict, according to Jay Stevens, director of market analytics at the firm. The decision to hedge couldn’t have been more prescient. When markets opened Monday, European and US traders were greeted by screens of red as a general collapse in commodities that kicked off in Asia swirled around the globe. Oil futures nosedived in London and New York as geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran appeared to ease. European gas plunged as much as 14% while US futures headed for the steepest loss in three decades. Metals and some agricultural markets also dropped. Energy companies, brokers, manufacturers and speculators employ hedging instruments such as swaps, options and futures to lock in profits or shield future supplies from potential losses. (RTTNews) - European markets closed on a positive note on Monday, riding on data showing an improvement in the manufacturing activity in the major economies of the region in the month of January. Slightly easing concerns about U.S.-Iran friction after U.S. President Donald Trump said he was hopeful of agreeing a deal with Iran helped as well in lifting sentiment. Investors looked ahead to the European Central Bank's monetary policy announcement, due on Thursday. The pan European Stoxx 600 climbed 1.03%. France's CAC 40 gained 0.67%, while the U.K.'s FTSE 100 and Germany's DAX moved up 1.15% and 1.05%, respectively. Switzerland's SMI ended 1.67% up. Among other markets in Europe, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden ended with sharp to moderate gains. Iceland and Poland edged up marginally, while Norway, Russia and Turkiye closed weak. In the UK market, JD Sports Fashion climbed more than 6% and Intercontinental Hotels Group gained 4.15%. IAG, AstraZeneca, Beazley, Ashtead Group, Natwest Group, Compass Group, Easyjet, Barclays, GSK, Aviva, Airtel Africa, Howden Joinery, Standard Chartered, IMI and Lloyds Banking Group moved up 2.3%-4%. Endeavour Mining, BAE Systems and Autotrader Group declined sharply. Fresnillo, Melrose Industries and Experian also closed weak. In the German market, Siemens Energy, Commerzbank, SAP, Deutsche Telekom and Hannover Rueck gained 2%-2.6%. Allianz, BASF, Continental, Siemens, Fresenius, Heidelberg Materials, Gea Group, Mercedes-Benz and Daimler Truck Holding moved up 1%-1.8%. Rheinmetall dropped about 2.7%. Fritz Jorgensen OpenAI ( OPENAI ) on Monday unveiled a stand-alone Codex app for Apple's ( AAPL ) macOS, amid increased usage for its popular artificial intelligence coding assistant. The Codex app has a refreshed interface that allows developers “to effortlessly manage multiple agents at once, run work in parallel, and collaborate with agents over long-running tasks,” the company said on its website. It will let users with ChatGPT Free and Go accounts have access to Codex for a “limited” time, while users with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans will get double the rate limit. “The Codex app changes how software gets built and who can build it—from pairing with a single coding agent on targeted edits to supervising coordinated teams of agents across the full lifecycle of designing, building, shipping, and maintaining software,” OpenAI added. In addition to the new app, the Sam Altman-led firm said that developers have substantially increased their usage of Codex just in the past month, as more than 1M developers have used the tool. “We’ll continue to expand where and how developers can use Codex, including making the app available on Windows, pushing the frontier of model capabilities, and rolling out faster inference,” OpenAI added. “Within the app, we’ll keep refining multi-agent workflows based on real-world feedback, making it easier to manage parallel work and move between agents without losing context. Intel's Core Ultra lineup of desktop and laptop processors has been frustrating to review. None of them has been across-the-board awful or totally without redeeming qualities. But Intel has struggled mightily this decade to produce new processors that are straightforward, easy-to-recommend improvements over their predecessors. The company's 12th- and 13th-generation Core chips offered big boosts to CPU performance over the 11th-generation CPUs, for example, but they also usually came with a significant hit to battery life, and they only minimally improved the GPU. The first-generation Core Ultra chips, codenamed Meteor Lake, improved the GPU but couldn't beat the CPU performance of older chips. Last year's Core Ultra 200V series, codenamed Lunar Lake, boasted good battery life and solid graphics performance but weaker CPU performance; better-performing Core Ultra 200H chips (codenamed Arrow Lake) improved CPU performance but came with lesser GPUs and some other missing features .
