Saul Loeb | AFP | Getty Images President Donald Trump on Wednesday criticized two of his Supreme Court appointees — Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett — for voting with other justices in the bombshell 6-3 decision that ruled his signature reciprocal tariffs were illegal , saying they sickened him and are "bad for our country." "Two of the people that voted for that, I appointed," Trump said at the National Republican Congressional Committee dinner at Union Station in Washington, D.C., without naming the two justices. Trump blasted Gorsuch and Barrett, along with the four other justices in the majority of the case, for not exempting the U.S. government from refunding up to $165 billion in tariffs paid by American importers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act . "They couldn't care less." Referring to Gorsuch and Barrett, Trump said, "And they sicken me." "They sicken me because they're bad for our country," Trump added. Trump's other appointee to the high court, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, dissented along with two fellow conservatives, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. malerapaso/E+ via Getty Images I believe that at this juncture, there are investors who might be considering the Invesco S&P MidCap Value with Momentum ETF ( XMVM ), a passively managed exchange-traded fund offering exposure to the combination of seemingly antithetical factors, for a number of reasons. For instance, if they are betting on the capital rotation to the size factor and cyclicals that we have seen earlier this year before the Iran war to resume. Or if they want to downsize their exposure to the large-cap echelon and the growth factor and rotate to the raciest value stocks, a seemingly safer place to be amid the conflict and its ripple effects for inflation and growth premia. And while these arguments certainly make sense on the surface, my intention today is to prove that XMVM does not offer either a sizable upside potential or at least a prospect of a lower theoretical maximum drawdown compared to that of the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF ( IVV ). More specifically, I see two main problems with this vehicle. Quality characteristics of its portfolio are quite soft even by the mid-cap echelon standards. And quality is the factor I favor in highly uncertain environments with economic shocks becoming increasingly possible. It cannot immunize portfolios from losses (especially in a scenario the market is currently in) but can at least make them less acute. There is a lot to dislike about XMVM's performance since the strategy change in June 2019, especially regarding the maximum drawdowns, which I pay close attention to in the current market conditions. In this regard, I am skeptical that it will be capable of outmaneuvering either the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF or the iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF ( IJH ) in the market environment we see today. And even though I am pleasantly surprised by XMVM's GARP tilt, I initiate coverage with a Hold rating. XMVM Strategy And Portfolio As we know from the Invesco website , XMVM "...is based on the S&P MidCap 400 High Momentum Va...

The Bank of Korea said the country’s financial system remained broadly stable in March, but warned that escalating Middle East tensions and structural vulnerabilities could amplify risks across markets. BOK board member Lee Soohyung , who led the latest financial stability review, said financial institution resilience and solid external payment capacity have helped maintain overall stability. Still, she flagged a range of latent risks that could quickly surface under adverse conditions. Lee pointed to the potential for heightened volatility in foreign exchange and financial markets as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East could trigger asset price corrections and cross-border capital shifts, according to a statement from the BOK that cited Lee’s views. She also warned that uneven economic growth and tightening funding conditions could exacerbate risks in vulnerable sectors, raising the likelihood of credit stress. The BOK’s report follows Prime Minister Kim Min-seok ’s call on Wednesday to further strengthen a preemptive response system, including preparations for worst-case scenarios, as turmoil in the Middle East is likely to be prolonged. On housing, expectations for price gains have eased following government measures, but persistent increases in Seoul and the surrounding areas continue to pose risks of financial imbalances. The Korean economy is facing “a complex challenge,” with upside risks to inflation and downside risks to growth both elevated amid the possibility of prolonged Middle East tensions, the BOK statement said, citing Lee, who called for contingency plans to prepare for multiple scenarios. The challenge is also set to confront Hyun Song Shin , the former head of research at the Bank for International Settlements, as he takes over as BOK governor next month. Economists expect he will lean toward a cautious but proactive stance, having previously emphasized the need for central banks to act early against inflation risks. Read more: South Korea T...
