The company owns a number of iconic brands in spreads, pet food, coffee, and baked goods, but the strong brand portfolio was not enough to offset certain capital allocation mistakes made in recent years. Consequently, the stock has fallen by 21% over the past 5-year period - significantly underperforming both the consumer staples sector and the equity market as a whole. Data by YCharts SJM's downfall in recent years has been a direct result of the company's acquisition frenzy , which I criticized back in 2020. The company, however, needed some of these deals in order to pivot away from its legacy brands and move into more attractive product categories. Unfortunately, for shareholders, this strategic move came at a significant cost that, as I noted a couple of years ago, was relatively easy to predict for those who are paying attention. Having said all that, a potential recovery is now within reach, but the way up won't be smooth sailing. Ongoing Problems SJM's most recent quarterly report outlined yet another round of impairment charges related to recent acquisitions, which confirms that the company did overpay for some of its largest deals as of late.
