Exclusive: Sir Paul Marshall’s climate views and those broadcast on GB News said to be ‘in direct opposition’ to those of Church of England The co-owner of GB News, a British TV channel accused of broadcasting climate change denial, has donated £28m to influential Church of England institutions that support climate action. This raises “serious questions”, say Christian leaders, given that Sir Paul Marshall’s views on the climate crisis and those frequently broadcast on the TV channel are “in direct opposition” to the Church of England, which believes that “responding to the climate crisis is an essential part of our responsibility to safeguard God’s creation and achieve a just world”. As the Makerfield byelection and a potential leadership challenge loom, there is a sense the PM is looking to create impacts that last As the weeks ticked down to her departure from Downing Street in 2019, Theresa May had a plan. Not only did she want to put a net zero target into law, but she wanted the UK to be the first major economy to do so. And that meant beating the French. “It required the machinery of government to move more quickly than the French parliament,” a No 10 official from the time recalls. And it worked: the UK target came into force in June 2019 , six weeks before May handed over to Boris Johnson, and five months before the French. She had her legacy. Continue reading...

Saudi Arabia’s Mutlaq Al-Ghowairi Contracting Co. has postponed plans for an initial public offering that was set to raise as much as $799 million and rank as the region’s first major listing of the year. The deal was pulled due to market conditions, according to people familiar with the matter. The firm will continue to evaluate the most appropriate timing to proceed with the offering, the people said, requesting anonymity to discuss confidential information. The contractor’s owners had been seeking to raise as much as 3 billion riyals ($799 million) through the sale of a 30% stake. At the top end of the range, MGC, as the company is known, would have been valued at 10 billion riyals. The deal would have been the first major Gulf deal since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran that led to the closure of the vital Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated against regional countries and struck energy infrastructure across the region. While Saudi stocks have outperformed most regional peers over this period, helped by higher oil prices and diversified export routes, IPO activity has been muted and there have been just two small listings on the main market so far this year. Even in the months before the conflict, the bourse had experienced a string of weak debuts and some firms had delayed listings. The MGC deal had attracted strong demand, Bloomberg News reported last week . Institutional orders significantly exceeded the number of shares on offer, even at the upper end of the prospective price range. International, regional and local investors had applied for shares in the offering, people familiar with the matter said. New share sales often require many times more demand than the deal size to ensure strong trading once the company lists. Representatives for MGC declined to comment. Companies in Saudi Arabia typically have a six-month window to list after obtaining regulatory approval. MGC’s authorization is set to expire in late June. Read More: Saudi Contractor’s Own...

The feature will allow companies to be added shortly after listing via intra-rebalance reviews, rather than waiting for the next scheduled rebalance. The launch comes just days after the makers of the S&P 500 index declined to tweak rules that would have enabled the rapid inclusion of mega initial public offerings including SpaceX , though the timing is unrelated, according to a spokesperson. Investor interest in space ETFs has surged in recent months ahead of the trading debut of Elon Musk ’s rockets-to-Twitter conglomerate, according to Bloomberg Intelligence . The products have pulled in $8 billion since the beginning of the year, overtaking defense ETFs and ranking second among BI’s 39 ETF themes for net inflows. Street Unrest In Albania After PM Says Pristine Land 'Belongs' To US-Saudi Investors Authored by Jake Johnson via Common Dreams Albanians took to the streets in droves for the eighth consecutive day on Sunday to protest a proposed $1.6 billion luxury resort complex backed by US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner , one of several investors in the project, which opponents say is both corrupt and disastrous for wetlands and wildlife . “One week later, we are still here, stronger than yesterday,” said the Albanian Ornithological Society, a leading critic of the proposed development. “Millions around the world are united in one voice for nature, for justice, and for the protection of what belongs to everyone, standing for every protected area in Albania.” Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has vocally defended the project amid mounting public backlash , saying in a recent interview that the land marked for development “belongs to the investors,” not the Albanian people. via Associated Press Rama also criticized the thousands of people who have turned out to protest the luxury hotel project as well as international media coverage of the demonstrations, saying that “there is no chance” that “the projects in Albania will be defined by street protests.” Demonstrators, many raising pink flamingo cutouts to decry the project’s expected impacts on the vulnerable bird and other wildlife, have demanded cancellation of the resort project and Rama’s resignation, accusing him of steamrolling environmental concerns to bolster the country’s tourism industry and curry favor with the Trump administration . Kushner currently works for the administration as a “ special peace envoy .” “We are stronger than your bulldozers,” chanted demonstrators over the weekend. As The New York Times reported last year, Rama heads the government committee that gave “ Kushner and his business partners the right to move ahead with accelerated negotiations to build the luxury resort on a 111-ac...

US President Donald Trump renewed his claims of momentum toward ending the conflict with Iran, after brokering a halt to hostilities between Israel and the Islamic Republic and easing tensions that had threatened to derail broader peace efforts. “We’re in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal,” Trump told reporters in New York on Tuesday. “We could have at least an idea one or tw...
“We could have at least an idea one or two days from now.” The US president spoke hours after Iran and Israel agreed to halt strikes on each other following a flare-up that saw both countries launch waves of ballistic missiles. He has repeatedly spoken of an interim agreement to end the war that began when the US and Israel started bombing Iran in February. A ceasefire has been in place for about two months, but sporadic fighting among the US, Iran and Israel has continued, underscoring the risk of a return to full-scale war in the absence of a lasting peace deal. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised statement on Monday that he would hold fire on Iran for now but would respond should Tehran attack again. Earlier, local TV station N12 reported that strikes in south Lebanon, where Israel is fighting Iran-backed Hezbollah militants, would continue at full force. Iran also announced an end to its military operations against Israel. But its central military command warned that if Israel continued to attack, including in southern Lebanon, “much harsher and more crushing actions than before will be on the way,” the semi-official Fars news agency reported , citing a statement. Even as the clashes seemed to subside, a US Army Apache helicopter went down near the Strait of Hormuz and it wasn’t clear if the aircraft suffered mechanical troubles or had been shot down by Iran, the New York Times reported. Asked about the episode, Trump said the pilots were fine and that a report would be released later Tuesday. Highlighting the tenuous nature of the pullback, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said i...
