Gordon Haskett Research Advisors believes that Booking Holdings ' operational advantages are being overlooked amid heightened AI fears. The research firm upgraded the online travel platform to a buy rating from hold. Analyst Robert Mollins' price target of $5,440 implies an upside of 28%. Shares of Booking Holdings have slipped 14% over the past 12 months. The stock is down 21% on the year. The analyst believes that investors are discounting the company's defensive moat on a backdrop of artificial intelligence fears. "We believe investors have overreacted to AI-driven competitive encroachment concerns and discounted key aspects of BKNG's operational advantages and defensive positioning," he wrote. "BKNG's advantages, combined with high startup costs and legal risks associated with building a competing online travel platform, should serve as a deterrent to AI companies directly competing." Mollins' upgrade comes before Booking Holdings reports its fourth-quarter earnings on Feb. 18. The analyst believes that the company could report upside in its room nights versus current consensus and guidance. "Our expectation for room nights upside should flow through to outperformance across revenue, EBITDA, and EPS," he added. The analyst also believes that dollar weakness will continue to drive foreign exchange-induced tailwinds. Mollins also believes that the company's current valuation offers investors a compelling buying opportunity here. "Overall, with (1) BKNG trading well below the valuation multiples seen just weeks ago and over the prior two years, (2) the valuation premium relative to peers narrowing despite significantly stronger margins, and (3) our view that AI worries are overblown, we see a low-risk, high-reward opportunity that warrants action," he wrote.

The absence of structural hedgers and the dominance of perpetual futures make forced deleveraging a recurring feature. In last week's broad "risk-off" shock across markets, Bitcoin traded down into the low-to-mid $60,000, and gold also experienced a sharp correction into the high $4,000 after surging to near $5,600/oz, but quickly stabilized and still trades around $5,000. In this situation, tech stocks underperform more often than not. A lot of market watchers are excited by the "January Barometer" or "January Indicator," which suggests that January's returns indicate the direction of stocks for the full year. The S&P 500 index was certainly up in January (although by just 1.37%). But tech investors might not want to pop the champagne just yet, because there's another historical trend we've seen in January that has dire implications for tech stocks in 2026. It may already be starting to play out. Dow vs. Nasdaq Very few investing rules have been true 100% of the time over the last 15 years. Whether it's the "January Barometer" (80% accurate over the past 15 years) or the "Santa Claus Rally" (27% accurate over the past 15 years), there are almost always exceptions. But one rule that has held up for the past 15 years is this: Every time the Dow Jones Industrial Average has underperformed the Nasdaq Composite Index by more than 0.25 percentage points in January, the Dow has gone on to underperform the tech-heavy Nasdaq for the year. That's happened nine times over the past 15 years, with 100% accuracy. In fact, you'd have to go all the way back to January 2007 -- as the real estate bubble was inflating prior to the Great Recession -- to find an exception to this rule. It makes sense: Tech stocks like those on the Nasdaq tend to grow faster than the mega-cap corporations that make up the Dow. But what about the years when the Dow outperformed the Nasdaq in January, like this year? The January omen The Dow has outperformed the Nasdaq in January by more than 0.25% in five of the last 15 years -- 2011, 2013, 2016, 2022, and 2025.
