Britain's competition regulator said on Tuesday it would again investigate Microsoft’s software‑licensing practices in the cloud market as part of a broader probe, months after declining to act on earlier findings. Last year a Competition and Markets Authority inquiry group found the dominance of Amazon and Microsoft was harming competition in cloud computing, with the latter singled out for its licensing practices. It said Microsoft was using its power in enterprise software, such as Windows Server and Microsoft 365, to limit competition by charging licensing fees when its services were used on rival platforms.

AdrianHancu Société Générale’s cross-asset team is highlighting four core equity trades, centered on a shift toward the “physical economy” and continued earnings resilience despite recent market volatility. The team recommends going long the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index ( RSP ), along with physical-economy sectors including Industrials ( XLI ), Utilities ( XLU ), Materials ( XLB ), and Energy ( XLE ). It also flags thematic exposure through its US reshoring basket and strategic resources/greenflation basket. SocGen said corporate profitability remains supported by policy-driven tailwinds, including industrial policy, AI-led capital spending, and infrastructure investment. The firm maintained its earnings outlook, forecasting S&P 500 ( SPY ) ( IVV ) ( VOO ) EPS growth of 15% in 2026 and 7% in 2027, with EPS reaching $333. Its year-end 2026 index target remains 7,300, with the Federal Reserve more likely to pause than pivot. The note also argues that recent stress in private credit and software valuations has largely been priced in, with broader credit indicators not signaling systemic risk. Banks ( KBE ), in particular, may be overshooting to the downside relative to fundamentals. SocGen sees the physical-economy capex cycle—spanning power, grid investment, reshoring, and automation—as the dominant theme, noting the equal-weight S&P 500 offers roughly double the exposure to those sectors compared to the cap-weighted index. Eye drug developer Apellis Pharmaceuticals ( APLS ) added ~137% in the premarket on Tuesday after the company agreed to be acquired by Biogen ( BIIB ) for $41 per share in a deal worth $5.6B. The acquisition, expected to close in Q2 2026, will add Apellis’ ( APLS ) commercial products, Empaveli and Syfovre, to Biogen’s ( BIIB ) portfolio, which generated $689M in revenue last year, the companies said. Under the agreement, Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Biogen ( BIIB ) will pay $41 per share in cash for Apellis ( APLS ) at the closing of the deal, indicating an 86% premium to APLS’ 90-day volume-weighted average stock price. Apellis ( APLS ) investors will also be eligible for a nontransferable contingent value right (CVR), which permits them to receive two payments worth $2 per share, depending on the achievement of certain milestones related to Syfovre net sales. Biogen ( BIIB ) expects to fund the deal with a combination of cash on hand and debt and anticipates the acquisition to boost its non-GAAP diluted EPS in 2027 and compounded annual growth rate through 2030. JamesBrey/iStock via Getty Images Introduction With the last few years centered around the direction of inflation, the demand for higher-yield investments has seemed to grow. Covered call funds have emerged in popularity. But one sector that I've been a fan of for years is the BDC ( BIZD ) sector. Once seen as riskier investments due to their lending to private, sometimes financially distressed businesses, many investors scoffed at the thought of owning BDCs as long-term investments. And the sector has been in the spotlight recently due to the SaaSpocalypse: the threat of AI causing disruption in software businesses. For BDCs, many have high exposure to Software, which has resulted in higher volatility. The company I discuss today, Trinity Capital ( TRIN ), also has exposure to the sector, but minimal compared to some peers. Lower interest rates have also weighed on the sector. Usually, when dividend stocks have double-digit yields, this can be an indication of lower quality, putting them at higher risk of a dividend cut. While a lower share price has pushed TRIN's yield above 14%, I don't believe their dividend is in any danger of being cut in the near term. In this article, I discuss their latest earnings, fundamentals, why this BDC has made its way into my top 5 favorites, and why I believe their dividend will remain safe in 2026. Previous Thesis It's been well over a year since I last covered Trinity Capital, rating the stock a hold due to the threat of rate cuts causing underperformance. Due to a lack of catalysts, I believed TRIN and the entire sector could potentially see downside despite their attractive yields. Since TRIN is down close to 6% at the time of writing. This is compared to the S&P ( SP500 ), up close to 5%. Despite the lack of catalysts, TRIN performed well and saw record numbers, resulting in AUM reaching $2 billion. Dividend coverage was solid at 106% with additional liquidity of $64.5 million to temporarily cover shortfalls. Seeking Alpha Why...
