Gordon Haskett Research Advisors believes that Booking Holdings ' operational advantages are being overlooked amid heightened AI fears. Bitcoin operates within a highly financialized, cash-settled derivatives market where speculative open interest is large relative to market capitalization. Gold’s derivatives market, while large in absolute terms, represents a much lower leverage burden relative to its market size and is anchored by physical supply and demand. Downside volatility in Bitcoin reflects a market designed around trading, leverage, and rapid price discovery, with derivatives leading spot price formation. The absence of structural hedgers and the dominance of perpetual futures make forced deleveraging a recurring feature. In last week's broad "risk-off" shock across markets, Bitcoin traded down into the low-to-mid $60,000, and gold also experienced a sharp correction into the high $4,000 after surging to near $5,600/oz, but quickly stabilized and still trades around $5,000. A lot of market watchers are excited by the "January Barometer" or "January Indicator," which suggests that January's returns indicate the direction of stocks for the full year. The S&P 500 index was certainly up in January (although by just 1.37%). But tech investors might not want to pop the champagne just yet, because there's another historical trend we've seen in January that has dire implications for tech stocks in 2026. It may already be starting to play out. Dow vs. Nasdaq Very few investing rules have been true 100% of the time over the last 15 years. Whether it's the "January Barometer" (80% accurate over the past 15 years) or the "Santa Claus Rally" (27% accurate over the past 15 years), there are almost always exceptions. But one rule that has held up for the past 15 years is this: Every time the Dow Jones Industrial Average has underperformed the Nasdaq Composite Index by more than 0.25 percentage points in January, the Dow has gone on to underperform the tech-heavy Nasdaq for the year. That's happened nine times over the past 15 years, with 100% accuracy. In fact, you'd have to go all the way back to January 2007 -- as the real estate bubble was inflating prior to the Great Recession -- to find an exception to this rule. Greenwich Metals Inc . and Element Alpha SA are finalizing talks over a merger that would give the commodity traders greater heft in key markets, according to people familiar with the matter. The two privately owned companies have been discussing a combination that would bring together Greenwich’s metals expertise with Element Alpha’s energy traders, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. The proposed combination comes after months of wild price swings in metals and natural gas markets . A merger would allow the firms to move larger volumes and better compete with the industry’s biggest trading houses, which benefit from wider banking relationships and greater leverage with suppliers and shippers. Greenwich Metals was founded in 1991 with a focus on minor and nonferrous metals in North America. In 2018, the firm was bought out by investors led by several former Trafigura metals traders including Doug Pratt and Richard Fromme. However, the company posted a double beat with its Q4 2025 financials as its revenue grew ~8% YoY to $105.7B while adjusted EPS fell ~8% YoY to $1.09, surpassing the Street forecasts by $2.1B and $0.09, respectively, thanks to an all-around performance across its business. Revenue from CVS’ ( CVS ) Health Care Benefits segment, which houses its health insurer Aetna, rose ~10% YoY to $36.3B, while the medical benefit ratio there held steady at 94.8% amid an improved performance in its government health plans.
