Rivian provided flights from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, Utah, and accommodation so Ars could drive the R2. Ars does not accept paid editorial content. This month, Rivian begins customer deliveries of the highly anticipated R2 model that aims to bring the startup’s aspirational adventure lifestyle to the mainstream EV market. That has required cutting costs, scaling production, and reaching new customers—a big brief, then, for the diminutive R2. To show exactly how a startup transitions to a mass-market automaker, Rivian hosted a picturesque media event in Utah that included both on and off-road driving in the Launch Edition that stickers for just under $60,000 (including destination). We also got plenty of access to the technological development that underpins the brand’s critical electric crossover. The R2 almost perfectly matches the dimensions of today's best-selling US cars. This dedicated two-row model, versus the R1’s three-row S or pickup truck T, measures 185.9 inches (4,722 mm) long, or about 1 inch (25.4 mm) longer than a Honda CRV. The R1’s instantly recognizable profile and design language carry through, but unique packaging requirements dictated nifty design solutions. Read full article Comments

JHVEPhoto/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Disc Medicine ( IRON ) traded higher in the premarket on Tuesday after announcing that the company and the FDA have reached a consensus on a path to receive U.S. approval for its rare disease therapy bitopertin. Earlier this year, the regulator issued a complete response letter declining to approve bitopertin as a treatment for erythropoietic protoporphyria, a rare inherited metabolic disorder characterized by itchy and red skin following exposure to light. In a press release on Tuesday, the Watertown, Massachusetts-based biotech said that during a recently held Type A meeting, the FDA highlighted the potential to grant a traditional approval for the drug, subject to positive results from an ongoing Phase 3 trial. The international trial, APOLLO, for patients aged 12 and above with EPP and X-linked protoporphyria is scheduled to generate data in Q4 2026. Afterward, Disc Medicine ( IRON ) plans to submit a response to the CRL, seeking a potential FDA approval for bitopertin by mid-2027. Welcome to Next Africa, a daily newsletter on where the continent stands now — and where it’s headed. Sign up here to have it delivered to your email. In today’s edition, we look at plans to build two gas pipelines linking West Africa to the Mediterranean. And: South Africa’s economy shrugs off the initial shock of the Iran war Urbanization alongside global warming puts billions of people at risk A top Nigerian executive switches from banking to real estate Gas Gambit For years, the idea of piping natural gas from West Africa to the Mediterranean was dismissed as an unfeasible gambit. Now two such plans are in the works. Algeria last week said it was starting construction of its section of the long-promised Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, a conduit that will eventually stretch some 4,100 kilometers through Niger and into Nigeria. Back in 2022, the project was seen costing about $13 billion, although experts say the final price tag may be much higher. The ground-breaking ceremony in Algeria’s southern desert came scarcely a month after neighboring Morocco signaled it would raise funds for its own $25 billion pipeline . It will hug the Atlantic coast, linking gas fields in Nigeria, Senegal and Mauritania with the North African kingdom. The timing is no coincidence. The wars in Iran and Ukraine have rattled energy markets and made European nations and others anxious to secure ongoing access to alternative gas supplies. The dueling African pipelines are the latest manifestation of a decades-old tussle for regional sway. Morocco, a staunch ally of the West and Gulf kingdoms, and Algeria, which touts self-reliance, don’t agree on much. They’re especially at odds over Western Sahara, a vast territory subject to a 50-year dispute. Morocco claims sovereignty, while Algiers backs a movement seeking the area’s independence. Morocco’s pipeline would boost Africa’s most industrialized economy and advance its integration with the continent. For Algeria, its project would cement the O...
