Move puts AI firm in opposition to ChatGPT maker OpenAI, which has advocated for less stringent AI regulations Anthropic will spend $20m to back US political candidates who support regulating the AI industry, according to a company statement released on Thursday. Anthropic’s donation puts it in opposition to the ChatGPT maker OpenAI , which has advocated for less stringent regulation of AI. The company is donating to Public First Action, a political group that opposes federal efforts to quash state AI regulations like a December executive order issued by Donald Trump . One of the candidates that the group is backing is Republican Marsha Blackburn, who is running for governor in Tennessee and who opposed an effort in Congress to bar states from passing AI laws. A federal judge has ordered US officials to “facilitate the return” of at least some Venezuelan migrants deported last year as part of President Donald Trump ’s immigration crackdown. US District Judge James Boasberg on Thursday directed the Trump administration to issue travel documents to individuals who are no longer in Venezuela and want to return to the US to continue challenging their original deportations. The US government also must pay the cost of their commercial flights, he ruled. The migrants will be taken into custody when admitted into the US, the judge noted, but he wrote that this would at least put them in a better position to press their legal claims. Boasberg criticized the administration for failing to offer proposals for how the men could exercise their rights, describing the government’s approach as “essentially” telling the judge “to pound sand.” “Mindful of the flagrancy of the government’s violations of the deportees’ due-process rights that landed plaintiffs in this situation, the court refuses to let them languish in the solution-less mire defendants propose,” Boasberg wrote. Spokespeople for the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The latest order doesn’t cover all of the 137 Venezuelans who are part of the class action contesting Trump’s decision to designate them as members of the Tren de Aragua gang under the rarely-used Alien Enemies Act. The administration invoked the war-time power to swiftly send them to a prison in El Salvador last March. They were later returned to Venezuela and set free. The judge said class members still in Venezuela can continue to pursue their claims through written submissions. He hasn’t ordered the US to take other steps to bring them back, citing the administration’s foreign affairs concerns following the seizure of President Nicolás Maduro last month. The case involves a broad challenge to the legality of Trump’s proclamation invoking...

Physics research drives technological innovation, from medical imaging to data processing, write Dr Phil Bull and Prof Chris Clarkson ; plus letters from Tim Gershon and Vincenzo Vagnoni , and Prof Paul Howarth Your article ( UK ‘could lose generation of scientists’ with cuts to projects and research facilities, 6 February ) is right to highlight the serious consequences of proposed 30% funding cuts on the next generation of physics and astronomy researchers. The proposals also risk a generational destruction of the country’s ability to produce skilled graduates, retain specialist knowledge, and support physical science in industrial and educational settings. This comes against a backdrop of wider threats to university finances, from rising costs to declining international student numbers. An estimated one in four UK physics departments are already at risk of closure, and recent cuts and delays to Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) grants have further depleted finances and will result in the loss of some highly skilled technical staff. This lack of visibility contributed to the “fog” referenced by Fed Chair Jerome Powell during his post-meeting press conference in October. Powell likened the Fed’s approach to that of a cautious driver slowing down in foggy conditions, emphasizing the need for prudence amid heightened uncertainty. Fog lingers even after shutdown ends Although the shutdown stalemate was resolved, the resulting data gap persisted through the end of the year as collection and reporting processes remained disrupted. The absence of data collection led to the omission of the October Consumer Price Index (CPI) from the series. Key components, such as owners’ equivalent rent, were held flat, artificially dampening inflation readings once November data was published. Labor market data was similarly affected as the lack of October figures eliminated monthly comparisons, and November employment numbers were delayed until after the Federal Reserve’s December meeting. Consequently, policymakers were forced to make decisions without access to a complete data set. Federal Reserve cuts twice, outlook moderates Chair Powell initially struck a cautious tone after the Oct...

NiseriN/iStock via Getty Images Antero Midstream Corporation ( AM ) announced with the fourth quarter report that the company closed its acquisition of midstream assets in February. That provides a significant addition to the company for the coming fiscal year. It was funded through the sale of Utica Shale assets (this sale should close by the end of February), as mentioned in the last article. That meant the company did not have to raise a whole lot of additional cash. However, shareholders will benefit from the net addition of the divestment in fiscal year 2026. As with the parent company, Antero Resources ( AR ), there will be some decent growth from the acquisition and likely future benefits as well. This is yet another boost in free cash flow from an acquisition. Now there will be one-time expenditures in the first quarter due to the acquisition and likely some ongoing assimilation costs that should decline over time. But the benefits likely outweigh any initial expenditures (plus the purchase price). Additionally, the company ended the fiscal year with a debt ratio of 2.7. Even if there is some additional debt from the acquisition, the sale of some noncore assets is going to keep that debt ratio well into very safe and financially flexible territory. Fiscal Year 2026 Guidance The guidance given includes the acquisition, which has now closed. Antero Midstream Summary Of Fiscal Year 2026 Guidance (Antero Midstream Earnings Press Release Fourth Quarter 2025) The all-important free cash flow is expected to grow about 11%. This brings us closer to the reality of a dividend increase. Earnings are expected to have a growth rate roughly double the free cash flow growth rate. That can happen because typically earnings are a smaller percentage of revenue than cash flow. Therefore, smaller changes can have a larger impact on the smaller number, which is earnings. More importantly, the guidance for the midstream operation has a lot more firmness to it because the major cu...
