The XLP ( XLP ) fund currently has a Buy SA quant rating with a score of 3.92 . "Staples companies in XLP offer resilience through pricing power, steady demand, and reliable dividends," wrote SA contributor half a year back, giving it a Buy rating. More recently, "I rate XLP as HOLD: it remains a defensive cushion in systemic shocks, but current valuations make it unattractive relative to alternatives like XLK or SPY," wrote another SA contributor. US stock indices are the worst performers so far this week Fig. 1: Global stock indices week-to-date performances as of February 12, 2026 (Source: MacroMicro) Yesterday’s opening hours gains at the start of the US session evaporated and transformed into an almost broad-based selling across the board, except for the defensive sectors in the S&P 500 that bucked against the bearish trend; Consumer Staples (+1.4%) and Utilities (1.2%). The main catalyst for the weak performance has been renewed weakness seen in the technology stocks; the S&P 500 Technology sector was the worst-performing sector on Thursday (-2.6%), dragged down by Cisco Systems ( CSCO ), which plummeted by 12%, its worst single-day drop in nearly four years, with its warning that higher memory costs will adversely affect its profit margins. The short-term technical chart of the US Wall Street 30 CFD Index (a proxy of the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures) is now showing some signs of stabilization after yesterday’s sell-off. Let's examine the short-term trajectory of the US Wall Street 30 CFD Index and its supporting elements. Aluminum Futs Slide As Trump Weighs Metal Tariff Rollback In Affordability Push Aluminum futures in London slipped on Friday after a Financial Times report stated that the Trump administration is considering a partial rollback of steel and aluminum tariffs as it battles an affordability crisis (left over from the Biden-Harris regime years) ahead of November's midterm elections. The FT cited three people familiar with internal discussions who said White House officials are reviewing steel and aluminum import tariffs of up to 50%, which affect a wide range of downstream consumer products such as appliances to soda cans. The plan would exempt some products, pause further expansions, and shift toward narrower, product-specific national security investigations. Trade officials at the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative believe these tariffs are already denting consumer sentiment by pushing up prices for goods such as drink cans and pie tins. The administration is mulling carve-outs for popular food products to tame grocery-store inflation amid affordability concerns this year. Last year, Trump called for a trade war with Beijing ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. News of the planned tariff rollback on aluminum and steel goods sent metal futures in London falling on Friday morning. Aluminum slid 1.3% to $3,059 a ton on the LME. Zinc dropped 1.4%, while copper fell by about half a percent after available LME inventories posted their largest increase since July. The Bloomberg Industrial Metals Subindex (core contracts: aluminum, copper, nickel, lead, and zinc futures) appears to have formed yet another peak since 2022 and is still trading well below its Covid-era high. What is clear for companies operating in this space is that navigating the U.S. tariff regime has become arduous, with tariffs appearing to change monthly. Tyler Durden Fri, 02/13/2026 - 08:20

The great Dutch travel writer, who died this week, found history inscribed in every place he visited, all while remaining accountable to the present Cees Nooteboom, Dutch novelist and travel writer, dies aged 92 In the opening to his acclaimed travelogue Roads to Santiago, the Dutch author Cees Nooteboom writes that “there are some places in the world where one is mysteriously magnified on arrival or departure by the emotions of all those who have arrived and departed before”. Travellers have existed in every age, Nooteboom continues, but only for some does there exist a particular sorrow: that of the one who departs with no hope of return. For them, the voyage out becomes the life. Nooteboom, who was born in the Netherlands in 1933 and died this week aged 92 , was drawn to what could be grasped through the “prism of movement”. In a body of work that includes some 60 books of fiction, poetry, reportage and travel writing, of which only a dozen or so have been translated into English, he became a chronicler of departures. In The Following Story, Nomad’s Hotel , The Foxes Come at Night and Lost Paradise, Nooteboom, his characters and his subjects take to the road. They glimpse histories dissolving from memory and past cruelties rekindled, again and again, in ways that chill the heart. Nooteboom was 12 years old when his father was killed during the second world war; he has said that his first childhood memories are of the bombings and the destruction in their wake. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for a reordering of the transatlantic relationship as European leaders struggle with the turmoil of Donald Trump ’s second term. Kicking off the Munich Security Conference, Merz warned against a new era of great power politics and said that Germany and Europe need to bolster their security and independence together, while seeking partnerships to buoy the liberal order. But, he said, leaders must come to terms with the fact that the world has changed. “This order, as incomplete as it’s been even at the best of times, no longer exists as it did,” Merz told an audience of leaders and security experts on Friday in the Bavarian capital. He warned European leaders not to “reflexively write off” the US, saying such positions were short-sighted and failed to take into account the potential that can still be realized by engaging with Washington. A year after US Vice President JD Vance delivered a broadside against Europe over migration and freedom of speech, the leaders gathering in southern Germany have been searching for ways to salvage the post-World War II alliance while also contemplating the fact that they may instead need to carve out their own path in an increasingly dangerous world.

Cheng Xin | Getty Images News | Getty Images Pinterest shares were down 22% in premarket trading on Friday, after the company cited tariff-related shocks in disappointing fourth-quarter earnings. The social media company's Q4 earnings came in below analysts' expectations, with revenue of $1.32 billion compared with LSEG consensus estimates of $1.33 billion. Net income for the quarter plunged 85% to $277 million from $1.85 billion the prior year. It also recorded $541.5 million in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or EBIDTA, below the $550 million that analysts were projecting. Pinterest expects first-quarter sales to be between $951 million and $971 million, which is also below analysts' forecasts of $980 million. Pinterest shares tank as CEO blames tariffs for revenue miss, weak outlook CEO Bill Ready, said the company "absorbed an exogenous shock this year related to tariffs" and was more exposed to reduced advertising spend from large retailers. Pinterest also announced plans in January to lay off less than 15% of its workforce and cut back on office space, in a bid to go all in on AI. It said it's "reallocating resources" to AI-focused teams and prioritizing "AI-powered products and capabilities." What analysts are saying In a Friday note, Citi said it was downgrading shares of Pinterest from Buy to Neutral, "given more limited visibility from larger UCAN & EU advertisers due in part to tariffs and challenges across specific verticals," such as home furnishing, the rebuilding of its go-to-market sales function as Pinterest broadens its advertiser base, and greater investments impacting margins. watch now VIDEO 1:00 01:00 Pinterest reports Q4 earnings miss, provides weak guidance Closing Bell: Ove...

In this report, I discuss the revenue and cost initiatives and update my price target. FedEx stock has surged 60% since and exceeded the 53.6% upside I saw for the company based on earnings for 2027 outlined in my prior report , so I would say that the growth trajectory in the years ahead will be pivotal to the company’s ability to drive additional upside to the stock price. FedEx Aims For $98 Billion In Sales And $6 Billion In Free Cash Flow FedEx (Investor Day Presentation) For 2029, FedEx is aiming to generate $98 billion in sales, $8 billion in operating income at 8% margins with $6 billion in free cash flow, and $25 in GAAP earnings per share. International and US domestic revenues are expected to grow 4% annually. FedEx (Investor Day Presentation) In the B2B market, FedEx sees growth opportunities in healthcare, automotive, data centers, and aerospace. The US campaign to starve Cuba of fuel is having “an increasingly severe impact” on the island, affecting hospitals, public sanitation, water delivery and food distribution, the United Nations warned. “Policy goals cannot justify actions that in themselves violate human rights,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said Friday in a statement , calling on “all states” to lift their coercive measures, without singling out Washington. Daily life on the island of about 10 million people is grinding to a halt, with President Donald Trump ’s administration blocking all fuel deliveries to the island for more than a month. Washington’s latest aggressive push is part of its broader effort to topple the six-decade old communist regime in Havana. Cuba is experiencing widespread blackouts and the lack of gasoline has disrupted the government’s ability to deliver food, the UN said. At particular risk are schools, maternity homes, and nursing homes “with the most vulnerable groups being disproportionately impacted.” The White House, emboldened by its capture of Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro on Jan. 3, is pressing for unspecified concessions from Cuba. Havana has said it’s open to talks with the US but that its system of government and economy are not up for negotiation.
