JLGutierrez/E+ via Getty Images Stocks staged a nice rebound in the holiday shortened trading week. The S&P 500 ( SP500 ) broke a five-week losing streak, rallying 3.4% on the week. The NASDAQ ( COMP:IND ) rose more than four percent this week, after briefly entering official " correction" territory at the close of the previous week. Atlanta Fed's GDPNow - 04/01/2026 And equities rebounded despite another big move up in oil prices ( CL1:COM ) as the regional war in the Middle East entered its second month with no resolution in sight. Last week's move feels more like a " dead cat bounce" more than anything else. The Atlanta Fed reduced its estimate of first quarter GDP growth from 1.9% to 1.6% late last week. Blue Owl Capital ( OWL ) provided more clarity on some of the massive redemption requests it received in the first quarter for some of its private credit funds on Thursday. If the crisis in private credit market continues to gain steam, Blue Owl looks poised to be the poster child of the problems emerging in private credit. Much like Bear Stearns was for the subprime crisis just over a decade and a half ago. WSJ, Pitchbook In addition, the Wall Street Journal published a survey this week after it dived deeper in some large private credit funds from the likes of Blue Owl and Blackstone ( BX ) among others. It found that one quarter of these funds' loan book on average was to software companies. This was far higher than the 19% average on these funds' filings. And this sector is viewed as quite vulnerable to AI disruption and these asset lite businesses will provide little in the way of recovery if they go into default and liquidation. WTI Oil Price - 5-Day Chart (Market Watch) Interestingly, there was widespread profit taking across the energy sector this week even as WTI and Brent ( CO1:COM ) oil benchmarks moved much higher on the week. There was one piece of positive headline news that posted Friday morning, while the equity markets were closed for the holiday...

OpenAI ’s chief operating officer is shifting into a new role and two other top executives are going on leave due to health reasons, marking a major change to its executive bench ahead of a potential Wall Street debut as soon as this year. Brad Lightcap , OpenAI’s longtime COO, will now lead special projects and report directly to Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman , according to a memo viewed by Bloomberg. One of his main efforts will be overseeing OpenAI’s push to sell software to businesses through a joint venture with private equity firms . Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s recently appointed chief revenue officer, will be taking over some of Lightcap’s duties. Meanwhile, Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch is stepping down from her position to focus on her recovery from cancer, with plans to return in a more limited purview as her health allows. The company is searching for a new CMO. Fidji Simo , OpenAI’s CEO of AGI development who oversees much of its core business, will also take a medical leave for several weeks to seek new treatment for an ongoing neuroimmune condition and plans to return to her position. The flurry of changes coincide with a pivotal moment for the company. OpenAI is preparing for a possible initial public offering and just raised $122 billion in funding at an $852 billion valuation this week. Meanwhile, it’s pushing to bolster revenue by introducing advertising in ChatGPT , among other efforts. The company also faces heightened competition from Alphabet Inc. ’s Google and Anthropic PBC , the latter of which is expected to go public as soon as this year . “We have a strong leadership team focused on our biggest priorities: advancing frontier research, growing our global user base of nearly 1 billion users, and powering enterprise use cases,” OpenAI said in a statement. “We’re well-positioned to keep executing with continuity and momentum.” The ChatGPT maker is no stranger to executive shakeups. In the months after Altman’s brief ouster from OpenAI i...

The Justice Department lost its bid to continue an investigation into building-renovation cost overruns by the Federal Reserve, setting the stage for an appeal that could eventually reach the Supreme Court. US District Chief Judge James Boasberg upheld an earlier ruling he made to quash two grand jury subpoenas issued to the central bank by US Attorney Jeanine Pirro as part of a criminal investigation into the cost overruns, and congressional testimony Chair Jerome Powell provided on the matter. Pirro’s office had asked Boasberg to reconsider his decision to reject the subpoenas. “The Government’s arguments do not come close to convincing the Court that a different outcome is warranted,” Boasberg said in his order, dated April 3. The ruling is the latest development in a legal battle that pits the independence of the Fed against the Justice Department’s power to carry out investigations. The fight also threatens to delay the confirmation process for President Donald Trump ’s hand-picked Fed chair nominee, Kevin Warsh , to take over at the central bank . The Justice Department didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Boasberg issued an earlier ruling in March quashing the subpoenas, saying the Justice Department failed to provide evidence to justify them. Pirro, who is the US attorney for the District of Columbia, has vowed to appeal that decision. She told reporters on March 13 that the ruling would essentially neuter the ability of federal prosecutors to use grand juries to gather information during the early stages of an investigation. The subpoenas seek information related to the Fed’s ongoing $2.5 billion renovation of its headquarters in Washington, and testimony that Powell provided about the construction to the Senate Banking Committee during a hearing last year. Pirro’s office said in a court filing it has been investigating potential fraud against the US government and false statements. “The Government’s fundamental problem is that it has presen...

Maybe you like baking bread and listening to history podcasts about Nazi atrocities. Maybe it’s watching Notting Hill in a Hugh Grant mask. Perhaps you love to unwind by sitting in your walnut-panelled library and reading Catullus, naked, covered in Doritos crumbs, with a plastic bag over your head. Or enjoy nothing better than doomscrolling in a state of late-night brain-death, before accidentally subscribing to a mystery supplement that will rid you of all the horrific writhing parasites inside your body, because the advert had a really convincing animated graphic that made you hate yourself. Those pillars of Klopp’s reign are weakening under Arne Slot and April may determine whether they are left standing at all. Two cup quarter-finals in succession should signal a season on the right track for Liverpool; showpiece occasions such as Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday whetting the appetite for what May could have in store. Hegseth: Military Bases Are No Longer Gun-Free Zones Authored by Catherine Salgado via PJMedia.ocm, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has overturned the controversial rule banning firearms from military installations. Up until now, it was nearly impossible for servicemen to obtain permission to carry personal firearms on military posts and bases. That is about the change. “Not all enemies are foreign, nor are they all outside our borders,” said Hegseth in an April 2 video. “Some are domestic. Confirming your God-given right to self protection is what I'm signing into action today. And I'm proud to do so.” Our military installations have been turned into gun-free zones—leaving our service members vulnerable and exposed. That ends today. pic.twitter.com/IQ204YepZ0 — Secretary of War Pete Hegseth (@SecWar) April 2, 2026 There have been multiple murders or mass casualty events on bases in the last decade, numerous drone incursions on military property, and a growing trend of foreigners breaching military bases, so there is good reason to think servicemen should be able to carry firearms on installations. Besides which, the overwhelming majority of mass shootings occur in gun-free zones. But Hegseth above all based his argument on the Constitution. “Our great republic was founded on a simple yet bold idea: our rights, as citizens, are not granted to us by government, but instead, by God, ” the secretary said. “250 years ago, the Revolutionary War was fought to secure our God-given rights. The Second Amendment to our Constitution enshrines the right of all citizens to carry weapons to protect themselves, their families, and their fellow countrymen.” And if any citizens can be trusted with guns, Hegseth argued, it is servicemen. “The War Department's uniformed service members are trained at the highest and unwavering standards. These war fighters, entrusted with the safety of our nation, are no less entitled to exercise their God-given right to keep and bear arms than any othe...
