Euro-denominated stablecoins can be a valuable tool for cheap international transfers, supplementing the European Central Bank ’s push for a digital common currency, Governing Council member Joachim Nagel said. Discussing transatlantic frictions, the Bundesbank president said Europe must become more independent on payment systems and highlighted the ECB’s work to create a digital version of the euro. “I also see merit in euro-denominated stablecoins,” he told an event Monday at the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany. “They can be used for cross-border payments by individuals and firms at low cost.” President Donald Trump ’s push to make crypto more mainstream has raised fears that dollar-backed stablecoins could gain a foothold in Europe, threatening the region’s banks and monetary sovereignty. Nagel’s remarks suggest growing open-mindedness at the ECB on euro-pegged stablecoins, after some officials fretted about the dollar’s dominance and the fact that the instruments are privately issued and could jeopardize financial stability. ECB’s Cipollone Says Digital Euro Guarantees Strategic Autonomy Stablecoins Can Threaten Entire Financial System, ESM Chief Says EU Watchdog Pushes Multi-Issuance Crypto Ban on Crash Fears Deutsche Bank Explores Stablecoins and Tokenized Deposits Nagel said last week that “the Eurosystem could support DLT-based payment instruments not directly related to central bank money, in particular, tokenized deposits and euro-denominated stablecoins.” He also warned that “a hypothetical replacement of a domestic currency with stablecoins would be equivalent to a dollarization of the corresponding economy,” though called the risk small.

ByteDance says that it's rushing to add safeguards to block Seedance 2.0 from generating iconic characters and deepfaking celebrities, after substantial Hollywood backlash after launching the latest version of its AI video tool. The changes come after Disney and Paramount Skydance sent cease-and-desist letters to ByteDance urging the Chinese company to promptly end the allegedly vast and blatant infringement. Studios claimed the infringement was widescale and immediate, with Seedance 2.0 users across social media sharing AI videos featuring copyrighted characters like Spider-Man, Darth Vader, and SpongeBob Square Pants. In its letter, Disney fumed that Seedance was "hijacking" its characters, accusing ByteDance of treating Disney characters like they were "free public domain clip art," Axios reported . In January 2023, Nexo had agreed to pay the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission a penalty of $45M. The fine was charged over a failure to register the offer and sale of its retail crypto asset lending product, the Earn Interest Product. EIP allowed U.S. investors to tender their crypto assets to the company in exchange for interest. The SEC order had found that the EIP is a security and its offer and sale did not qualify for an exemption from registration. The company has returned three years after leaving the U.S. following clashes with regulators, a Monday report by Reuters noted. Nexo has discontinued the EIP product for U.S. investors, a spokesperson reportedly told the newswire. Its U.S. offering includes flexible and fixed-term yield programs, an integrated exchange, crypto-backed credit lines, and a loyalty program. Bakkt is set to provide the digital asset trading infrastructure in the partnership. Reform of this stealth tax is long overdue – and with it, a shake-up of the whole university system Never go to war with Martin Lewis. The one iron law of politics is that the financial guru who built moneysavingexpert.com has a quasi-godlike status in Britain, the man millions trust with their cash in a way they would never trust any politician. If he takes up a cause, he usually wins. So when Lewis joined the revolt against recent changes to the student loan system, urging young graduates to lobby their MPs in protest, trouble was never going to be far behind. And now apparently it’s here. Last week, the Green party leader, Zack Polanski, called for “a conversation about student debt forgiveness”, echoing a rallying cry among young Democrat voters at the last US election for loans to be written off faster (though he didn’t explain where he would find the billions that would cost). Shortly afterwards, five former education secretaries – including Labour’s David Blunkett – publicly backed a Sunday Times campaign for admittedly more modest reforms to student finance. It looks like the slow-burning anger of graduates who went to university in England and Wales between 2012 and 2023 – on a plan that walloped them with higher interest rates than those who went before or after – is finally starting to set Westminster alight. Claudia Greco | Reuters Anyone trying to buy a souvenir at the official Olympic stores at the Milano Cortina Games will have been exposed to an issue troubling Europe's policymakers: the dominance of foreign payment providers and the fading role of cash. Under a sponsorship deal with the International Olympic Committee dating back to 1986 and extended to 2032, Visa is the sole card provider at the Games, with signs reading "Card payment? We accept only Visa" and staff offering prepaid cards on the spot. By the next Winter Games in France in 2030, people could have another option if the European Central Bank meets its goal of launching a digital euro in 2029. Dado Ruvic | Reuters Declaring the project key for Europe's economic security, the EU Council in December endorsed the digital euro saying it would be "available to the general public and businesses to make payments anytime and anywhere in the euro area". That remains the prerogative of cash, but EU lawmakers are still working on rules that would make it unequivocally mandatory for shops and service providers to accept cash, except for remote payments or unmanned services. Gone to get some cash At the Games stores, cash is accepted and ATM machines have been installed to allow people to withdraw money, a spokesperson for the organisers said. A spokesperson for Visa said the company was committed to making the purchase experience for Milano Cortina products the best it can be. People no longer carry banknotes in their wallets. "My dad's just gone to withdraw some cash. We saw the sign and we don't have Visa," said Marta Mule, a young Italian magazine contributor, waiting in a long queue that stretched up to the entrance of the main Olympics store in Milan. A ...
