spawns/iStock via Getty Images By Ezequiel Gomes Gold ( XAUUSD:CUR ) hovered near $5,002 per ounce on February 16 as the market slipped back toward the $5,000 psychological mark after failing to extend last week’s rebound. The pullback has been framed by a firmer U.S. dollar and thinner liquidity tied to holiday closures. Technically, gold is stuck in a compression zone where mean reversion and trend support meet in a narrow band. The daily trend gauges show the 20-day SMA at 5,010.59, the 50-day SMA at 4,994.24, and the 200-day SMA at 4,989.74. With spot hovering just under the 20-day and only modestly above the 50- and 200-day, traders are effectively debating whether the dip is a routine retest of trend support or the start of a deeper unwind. When averages bunch up around a psychological handle like $5,000, the market tends to produce quick reversals and false breaks until a catalyst restores directional conviction. Gold price dynamics (January - February 2026) (Source: TradingView) Momentum is not yet confirming a decisive impulse. RSI (14) was 49.718, consistent with two-way trade, while MACD (12,26) printed 1.71, indicating only mild positive momentum. Volatility is also relatively contained: ATR (14) was 20.5022, implying a typical daily swing near $20 and setting realistic 24-72 hour objectives. For levels, first support sits at $4,960-4,970, built around the Feb. 16 low at 4,966.51, while a deeper floor is $4,880-4,900, anchored by the Feb. 12-13 swing lows at 4,879.05 and 4,888.71. Resistance is $5,010-5,020 first, then $5,080-5,120. Macro backdrop and positioning watch The near-term narrative has been shaped as much by liquidity as by macro headlines. Reuters reported that thin trading linked to U.S. holiday closures and Lunar New Year holidays in parts of Asia can reduce depth and widen spreads, making prices more sensitive to incremental flows and technical magnets. In that environment, $5,000 becomes a focal point for stop placement and options hedgin...

It seems like just a few months ago, any company suggesting it was using AI would be rewarded by the market with billions in new market cap valuation. Last week, companies were hoping they wouldn’t find themselves in the crosshairs of an AI company or bot claiming it would destroy their business model. Neuberger Berman analyst Joe Amato described an atmosphere in which AI felt like a “heat-seeking missile” targeting new sectors daily. The AI destruction of market cap began in late 2025 with fears that capital spending would bring down the biggest spenders. Without waiting for proof, investors hammered the Mag 7 stocks ( MAGS ) on these new fears. Oracle ( ORCL ) was the canary in the coal mine when it broke below its 50-day moving average in the same week that the QQQ topped, with the big cap tech Mag 7 (MAGS) leading the way down. See the chart below. The peak in MAGS put a lid on QQQ, but this was only the beginning of the trouble that has since turned into panic in several industries. The chart below begins when the QQQ peaked on October 29th, 2025 and shows the percentage changes since. As you can see, MAGS drags the QQQ down in the same way it had pushed in the past few years. IGV (Enterprise Software) also fell sharply in late 2025. This was the beginning of what has increasingly become an obvious and dangerous bearish tone toward AI’s impact on the market. Last week, fears of AI damaging long-standing business models expanded into wealth management, logistics stocks, and financial stocks, and there were plenty of dire predictions, including Microsoft’s AI CEO claiming that “most if not all white-collar tasks can be replaced by AI within 12-18 months." IWM ’s late January push to new highs provided encouraging news for the bulls, but its subsequent retreat and the simultaneous new wave of panic-like selling of the IGV created a jittery "sell first, ask que...

Ruthless Americans reel off 5-0 victory Switzerland or Canada await in Thursday’s final A United States women’s hockey team already being hailed as one of the best ever assembled is right where they expected to be: playing for Olympic gold. The Americans brushed aside Sweden 5-0 in the first of Monday’s semi-finals, setting the stage for a potential seventh gold-medal showdown with Canada. Twenty years ago, almost to the day, the USA women absorbed one of the great Olympic shocks when Sweden stunned them in a shootout just down the A4 autostrada in Torino, ending a streak of 25 straight losses to the Americans during which they’d been outscored 187-29. There would be no such ambush this time, even if Sweden coach Ulf Lundberg had suggested the US team were “just human beings” and might not have been overly keen on facing his team in the semi-finals. International stocks -- both the developed and emerging market varieties -- are extending last year's outperformance of the S&P 500 in the early stages of 2026. For many investors, a broad-based index fund is the preferred way to access non-U.S. stocks, but some market participants choose to take on tactical exposures targeting specific countries. Fortunately, they don't have to embrace exotic, potentially turbulent fare. Rather, they can consider funds like the iShares MSCI Japan ETF (NYSEMKT: EWJ) , which is soaring -- and there are indications that this exchange-traded fund (ETF) has more gas in 2026. This Japan ETF is benefiting from domestic policy and market-minded reforms. Image source: Getty Images. Continue reading
