Viral Influencer: How Bill Gates' Billions Shape US Medical Research Authored by Paul D. Thacker via RealClearInvestigations , Bill Gates has long been one of the most admired people in the world, especially since he stepped down from his role running Microsoft to devote himself and much of his fortune to philanthropy. That reputation has been tarnished recently, however, by revelations of the billionaire's close relation with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein , and exposes on his own fraught relationships with women. On the eve of Gates' private testimony with Congress scheduled for tomorrow, a trove of federal whistleblower documents provided to RealClearInvestigations is renewing questions about how Gates money has bought what critics complain is an untoward influence on government health policy . For almost a quarter of a century, his main vehicle of power, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), allowing Gates to shape the direction of the country's health strategy in ways that have benefitted his own priorities and pet causes while polishing his image as a benevolent global do-gooder. At a time of growing concern about the power of billionaires such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Sam Altman, Gates' efforts stand out. Instead of lobbying federal agencies for specific policies, Gates leveraged his wealth to work inside the government , partnering with high-ranking NIH officials to steer taxpayer research funding and design scientific policies for several federal programs. The cache of several dozen emails and documents, made public for the first time by an NIH whistleblower, reinforces previous reports detailing Gates's extensive influence over U.S. biomedical research. During the height of the COVID pandemic, Kate Elder, a senior vaccines policy adviser for Doctors Without Borders, complained to Politico , "What makes Bill Gates qualified to be giving advice and advising the U.S. g...

It may not be until after a year that it's eligible, and even then, it may not be a sure thing given the company's lack of profitability. For the overall stock market , this could be good news. You may be tempted to go with what's hot right now and focus on the latest trends, but that can be risky. Meanwhile, being too conservative and avoiding risk entirely could result in limited returns and may not seem all that worthwhile. Three stocks that I think can be ideal ones to build up a portfolio around are Visa (NYSE: V) , Home Depot (NYSE: HD) , and Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) . With this mix of stocks, you'll get three reasonably valued investments that have strong fundamentals and that also pay dividends. Here's a closer look at each one of them. England 3-0 Ukraine Carter 14, Stanway 37, Mead 67 England had to settle for a place in the World Cup playoffs despite cruising to a 3-0 victory against Ukraine, as Spain’s 6-1 win in Iceland forced England to finish in second spot. It is the first time that England have failed to top their World Cup qualifying group for nearly 25 years, since missing out on a place at the 2003 World Cup, back when the major tournament finals only included 16 nations overall. Being involved in the playoff this time around is not as concerning as it might initially sound – a revamp of the format has meant that only four European sides will qualify automatically, down from nine automatic qualifiers four years ago. Microsoft on Tuesday released fixes for two high-severity zero-days that were disclosed by a researcher who has been locked in a testy beef with the software giant. Nightmare Eclipse, the pseudonym the researcher goes by, released a handful of high-severity vulnerabilities in recent months, making them zero-days that had the potential to be exploited in the wild. The researcher has said the disclosures, which included proof-of-concept code, came after Microsoft reneged on an arrangement the two made regarding vulnerabilities they had discussed. Disclosure drama “But someone violated our agreement and left me homeless with nothing,” Nightmare Eclipse wrote in March. “They knew this will happen and they still stabbed me in the back anyways, this is their decision not mine.” Read full article Comments

Citigroup Inc. is preparing for a windfall from trading across asset classes, with momentum appearing more sustained than it did early last year, according to Chief Financial Officer Gonzalo Luchetti . The bank is on track to post a high single-digit to low double-digit percentage increase in markets revenue, Luchetti said Tuesday at a financial conference hosted by Morgan Stanley . That’s well above the 2% increase expected by analysts in a Bloomberg survey. Unlike last year’s second quarter, when President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs roiled markets, the current period is marked by strength across equities, derivatives, fixed income, currencies and commodities, Luchetti said. “We’re seeing good volumes in the second quarter as well,” Luchetti said. “And those are more stable source of revenue momentum across the franchise.” He also forecast investment banking fees increasing by a percentage in the mid-double digits, which is in line with analysts’ estimates of 15% growth. The results could even be better by the end of June, he added. The haul could boost momentum for Citigroup, whose stock has climbed 15% this year. Chief Executive Officer Jane Fraser has won praise for pushing a turnaround of the bank, which has long been a laggard on Wall Street. Luchetti, 53, stepped into the spotlight at the company’s investor day last month, fielding a range of questions on strategy after Fraser promoted the Argentinian to CFO two months earlier. He previously ran Citigroup’s consumer bank and cards business. Read More: Citi’s Return Goals Win Investor Backing After CEO Pitch

Payoneer Global (NASDAQ:PAYO) , a cross-border payments platform, closed Tuesday at $6.39, up 24.32%. The stock jumped after reports that Canadian payments firm Nuvei is in advanced talks to acquire Payoneer for about $2.7 billion. Trading volume reached 51.7 million shares, about 1,005% above its three-month average of 4.7 million shares. Payoneer Global IPO'd in 2020 and has fallen 34% since going public. The S&P 500 slipped 0.26% to finish Tuesday at 7,386, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.97% to close at 25,679. Within the financial technology sector, rival PayPal closed at $41.46, up 0.48%, as investors weighed ongoing digital payments adoption alongside deal speculation around Payoneer Global. Just two years after private equity firm Advent International acquired Nuvei for $6.3 billion, the acquiree is trying to make a purchase of its own, offering $2.7 billion for Payoneer Global. However, even after Payoneer Global’s stock jumped 24% today, its market cap of $2.15 billion still sits 25% below Nuvei’s offer -- so the market isn’t fully convinced the deal will reach the finish line just yet.
