Central banks should resist the urge to hike interest rates in response to the Middle East crisis as this could damage economic output, according to International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva . Given that long-term inflation expectations are well anchored and haven’t budged, “it is important that the central banks act carefully,” she told Bloomberg Television. “Those that are in a good position of credibility, they can take a wait-and-see attitude. They also have to signal ‘we are prepared to act if necessary.’” “But please don’t rush: my worry is that because of 2022, now central banks may say ‘let’s move faster’ and that could be dangerous because it would suffocate growth,” she said in the interview on Wednesday on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank’s spring meetings in Washington. Earlier this week, the IMF — the world’s lender of last resort — downgraded its growth projection for the year to 3.1% after the war in the Middle East triggered a major oil shock. Officials are already shifting toward their “adverse” scenario, with growth seen at 2.5% this year and an average petroleum spot price index of around $100 per barrel. IMF Warns of Global Economic Downturn If War in Iran Lasts Global Rate Path Veers Higher in Wake of Another Trump Shock Anti-Recession Guardrails Are Weaker Than Ever Around the Globe Donald Trump’s war on Iran has already produced an initial bout of inflation, with further energy-related pressure in the pipeline, putting global policymakers on alert for possible rate hikes. Still, major central banks have primarily indicated caution so far.

Jeanine Pirro is sworn in as the new interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia during a ceremony hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 28, 2025. Leah Millis | Reuters Federal prosecutors are still pressuring the Federal Reserve over the Trump administration's allegations that there was some malfeasance involved in ongoing building revelations and Chair Jerome Powell 's testimony to Congress about them. But legal experts say U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro's investigation appears to be in trouble, and she faces a ticking clock to appeal a judge's rulings against her. Investigators from Pirro's office visited a Fed construction site Tuesday, according to a note sent by the Fed's legal team to the prosecutors and seen by CNBC. The investigators appeared "without prior notice" and asked for a tour, Robert Hur, an attorney for the Fed, wrote in the note. "Any construction project that has cost overruns of almost 80% over the original construction budget deserves some serious review," Pirro said in a statement to CNBC. The investigators' visit comes at a crucial juncture for Pirro's investigation. James E. Boasberg, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, ruled last month that the prosecutors hadn't met the low bar to seek a subpoena to the Fed. He quashed subpoenas Pirro's office had issued, and on April 3 declined a request by the prosecutors to appeal the order. Pirro has 30 days to appeal Boasberg's ruling quashing the subpoenas under the appeals court's rules. That sets up May 4 as a date by which the Senate may attempt to ahead with an initial vote on the nominee to replace Powell with former Fed governor Kevin Warsh . lakshmiprasad S Qatari Finance Minister Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari has warned the world will feel the full impact of the Iran war in one to two months. “Full-fledged impact is coming in one or two months,” Al Kuwari said during an appearance at an International Monetary Fund meeting in Washington, according to Bloomberg . “You’ll see huge economic impact as a result of this war.” Al Kuwari said that escalating fuel prices due to the war were "the tip of the iceberg," noting that exports of helium, which is used in chip production, have also been disrupted. Qatar supplies around 30% of the world's helium. Qatar's Ras Laffan LNG facility, which accounts for roughly 20% of global LNG exports, was badly damaged last month by an Iranian missile strike. In his remarks, Al Kuwari also warned of possible food shortages due to the disruption of fertilizer shipments from the Persian Gulf. Al Kuwari estimated it could take up to five years for Qatar to fully restore exports. Last week, the company’s stock saw a sharp decline on fears that the business model could be disrupted by the latest AI models of Anthropic ( ANTHRO ). Palantir is one of my most successful single stock picks and still represents a sizable part of my investment portfolio. With an undeniably rich valuation, today I want to spend some time analyzing exactly how Palantir’s business could be disrupted by AI models and whether this is a realistic scenario at all. What does Palantir do? Contrary to popular belief, what Palantir does can be summarized in simple terms. Palantir develops highly tailored software at scale. This software generates unique insights leading to actions that directly affect the top and bottom line of businesses. What Palantir does could have fundamentally been done even before AI (and, in fact, the company did it, having been founded in 2003). The difference is that it could not have been done at scale but rather only by relying on hiring a number of specialists and consultants that would scale linearly with demand. Modern AI models unlocked the possibility for Palantir to scale their business, both in terms of reach and in terms of impact. How does Palantir work? AI Ontology 101 The “how” behind the “what” Palantir does is a bit more complex. Palantir is, in my view, one of the few companies that has cracked AI . For the sake of this article, I will try explaining how Palantir works with their B2B customers in simple terms, as follows: Foundry ingests and unifies customer's data from disparate silos (e.g., ERP systems, operational databases, unstructured documents) into a single, cleansed database. The ontology acts as a digital twin of the enterprise, mapping real-world business objects (e.g., a "supplier," or a "production order"), their properties, and relationships. You might think of breathing as automatic, but dysfunctional breathing can arise even if you’re healthy We’re often taught that breathing is automatic . We barely think about it, as with blinking or the quiet, constant work of the heart. But many otherwise healthy adults have dysfunctional breathing. “Dysfunctional breathing, also known as breathing pattern disorder, is when breathlessness and/or difficulty in breathing is felt,” said Dr Stephen Fowler, a professor of respiratory medicine at the University of Manchester. It can occur outside the context of any disease. If a related condition is present, like asthma, the breathlessness might feel disproportionate to that condition, he said. Continue reading...

The time is long overdue for members of Congress to listen to the American people and end US military aid to the extremist Netanyahu government I am a proud Jewish-American. My father fled Poland in 1921 to escape poverty and antisemitism. Those in his family who stayed were murdered by the Nazis. Since childhood, I have known very well where antisemitism, racism, fanaticism and demagoguery lead. So let me be clear. Speaking out against the horrific and inhumane actions of Israel, and its extremist leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, is not antisemitic. Speaking out about the dangerous and destructive role that Israel plays in shaping US foreign and military policy is not antisemitic. It is, in fact, what every member of Congress and every American should be doing. Bernie Sanders is a US senator, and ranking member of the health, education, labor and pensions committee. He represents the state of Vermont Continue reading...
