Investigation finds instances of shocking maternity staff conduct alongside structural and staffing problems NHS maternity units often cover up harmful errors in childbirth, report finds What is the national maternity and neonatal investigation and why was it launched? A damning report published as a result of an investigation into England’s maternity care found instances of NHS Trusts covering up their failings and falsifying records to bereaved families, among a catalogue of several failings. Some of the most shocking examples given in the interim report included bereaved mothers facing cruel comments from maternity staff, shocking incidents of racism and discrimination, cover-ups and a lack of accountability from NHS trusts, alongside glaring structural and staffing issues within maternity wards. Damning inquiry into services in England reveals falsification of medical records after ‘negligent’ care What is the national maternity and neonatal investigation and why was it launched? Cruel comments, racism and cover-ups: key findings from England’s maternity care report Hospitals that cause harm and injury to women and babies during childbirth often resort to a “cover-up” of their mistakes, falsify medical records and deny bereaved parents answers, a damning report has found. “Negligent” care has devastating emotional and psychological consequences for families, disputes between maternity staff have a “disastrous” impact on mothers, and ethnic minority and poorer women have worse outcomes because of racism and discrimination, Lady Amos said. Banning families from being involved in investigations into the mistakes they encountered. Conducting inquiries into errors which families think are poor quality and do not properly reflect what occurred. Driving distressed families to instigate legal action as a way of getting at the truth after they were “denied openness and honesty in the aftermath of harm and bereavement”. Failing to treat families who have lost a baby with compassion. Continue reading...

Independent commissioner’s report finds websites can act as ‘accelerators’ of exploitation for sex workers using them The anti-slavery watchdog has called for a complete overhaul of websites advertising sexual services after an investigation revealed they can act as “accelerators” of exploitation for sex workers using them. While working online can provide enhanced protections for some, a new report from the independent anti-slavery commissioner, Eleanor Lyons, investigated the experiences of women who said they were exploited on the adult services sites, which typically allow users to browse through images and videos of women selling sex in their local area. Thanadon Naksanee/iStock via Getty Images Overview International equity returns were uneven in the fourth quarter. Small-cap stocks in select markets such as Canada and Taiwan had relatively strong gains, but emerging markets such as India and China lagged. In this environment, the benchmark MSCI AC (All Country) World ex USA Small Cap Index ended the period up 2.96%, while the Wasatch International Growth Fund—Investor Class was down -3.93%. On a geographic basis, stock selection in Japan and the U.K. detracted most from performance relative to the Index. However, stock selection in a few emerging markets, including India and Mexico, contributed to relative results. At the sector level, the Fund's holdings in the communication-services and information-technology sectors detracted most from relative performance. Conversely, stock selection in the consumer-discretionary and real-estate sectors contributed to relative results. Looking more deeply into the portfolio, the Fund owns a few companies that operate online real-estate portals, and these were large detractors. Currently, investors have turned their attention to how artificial intelligence ('AI') will affect these companies' business models. The negative view is that AI could lower the barriers to entry for the industry or allow consumers to search for housing without an online portal. If this happens, it could in turn affect both the growth rate and profitability of these companies. We've done a lot of research around the topic and believe those fears are overdone. AI has a higher chance of being disruptive to smaller portals, but we own the dominant search portals in their respective markets, and the portals are a critical industry success factor in our view. The firms with these portals serve as a valuable intermediary between a highly fragmented group of homebuyers and home sellers. That link is highly valuable to real-estate agents, and as long as those agents drive the bulk of home sales, we believe the v...

Philippine peso bonds are poised to extend their rally on interest-rate cuts, flush domestic liquidity and attractive valuations. Philippine government bonds have outperformed all emerging Asian peers so far this year — the 10-year yields have fallen 14 basis points — and may be set to go further. Brandywine Global sees the 10-year yield falling to 5.75% by year-end. It closed around 5.93% on Wednesday. Adjusted for inflation, it stands around 4%, the highest in emerging Asia. The securities may “rally somewhat more given the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’s shift toward a more dovish stance as growth confidence has been weak,” said Carol Lye , a portfolio manager at Brandywine. “Real yield valuations are still attractive as compared to regional peers.” The BSP cut rates a quarter point earlier this month and is forecast to ease by another 25 basis points by the first quarter of 2027, according to a median of economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Fourth-quarter gross domestic product rose by only 3%, the weakest pace in nearly 15 years outside of the pandemic, as the Philippines copes with a public works corruption scandal. Read more: Philippines’ BSP Chief Flags RRR Cut to 2% as Soon as Next Year There is still some value in Philippine bonds as “growth still looks quite weak and any additional weak data prints could prompt BSP to cut further,” said Shivank Sehgal , an investment analyst at Aberdeen Investments. Onshore liquidity has been supported by rate cuts from the BSP as well as signals from the central bank that the reserve requirement ratio will be cut further this year. Those more robust conditions have driven the yield on 91-day Treasury bills falling to the lowest since February 2023. “Very front-end yields in T-bills continue to grind sharply lower despite the large supply in these tenors, reflective of flusher liquidity conditions,” Citigroup strategist Gordon Goh wrote in a note Monday. Citigroup currently has a long call on the peso-hedged five-year bond.
