cemagraphics A notable shift is underway in U.S. equity markets as investor positioning stabilizes and trading activity broadens, according to Citadel’s head of equity and equity derivatives strategy, Scott Rubner. After a period marked by elevated volatility and defensive positioning, recent data suggests a more constructive backdrop is beginning to take shape. Rubner highlights that volatility has eased while capital flows are re-engaging, signaling renewed confidence among market participants. As earnings season gains momentum, investor focus is increasingly turning back to company-specific fundamentals, fostering a more selective, stock-driven environment. At the same time, a favorable supply-demand dynamic is developing. Institutional investors are adding risk exposure, systematic strategies are re-leveraging, and retail participation is picking up following the conclusion of tax season. Corporations have also re-entered the market through share buybacks, further supporting demand for equities. Options market activity reinforces this shift. Institutional flows have turned decisively more constructive, with recent sessions tracking toward the strongest weekly net buying skew since October 2024. Notably, investors are extending positioning further along the curve, with increased demand for upside exposure in June and September expiries—particularly in single stocks—marking a move away from the short-term, tactical trading that dominated in March. Ildo Frazao/iStock via Getty Images The Invesco S&P Pure Value ETF ( RPV ) offers investors a portfolio with very low valuations, thanks to an investment approach that favors companies with strong value profiles. This is a characteristic of its investment design that is exacerbated at this moment, given the fund’s increased exposure to cyclical and value areas like energy, basic materials, and industrials compared to the picture in my previous review of this fund in early 2025. Of course, RPV’s valuation gives it some appeal at this present time, given current uncertainties on the macro front. The flip side is a long-term track record that is not among the most compelling alternatives from a total-return perspective. With that in mind, the following sections will break down the fund’s core holdings and compare its sector positioning, valuation, and performance with the S&P 500 and other value ETFs. ETF Description and Highlights RPV provides targeted exposure to U.S. companies with the strongest value characteristics within the S&P 500 universe. The fund follows a rules-based methodology, tracking the S&P 500 Pure Value Index. As the first step, companies are assigned a value score, which incorporates metrics such as book-to-price, earnings-to-price, and sales-to-price ratios, and also a growth score, based on measures like historical sales and earnings growth, and 1-year price performance. Stocks are then ranked based on the relative balance between these scores, with only those exhibiting the strongest value bias included in the final index, as the index filters out stocks that exhibit a blended style. Once selected, stocks are weighted according to the strength of their value characteristics, resulting in higher allocations to stocks trading at lower valuations on a relative basis. The index is reconstituted and rebalanced annually to reflect current companies’ financials and market conditions. As of April 2, 2026, RPV had $1.7 billion in assets under management,...

bymuratdeniz/iStock via Getty Images It has been almost 5 months since I covered Verizon Communications Inc. ( VZ ) and assigned a buy rating (check it here ). And just in this period, the market has already given a certain re-rating to the stock, which rose ~11%, representing a 14.5% total return after dividends. This small upside is not enough to make me less optimistic about the stock. In my last article, I mentioned that the valuation was so appealing that even in a scenario where Verizon delivers flat revenue forever growth, it would still be a case offering a double-digit IRR. But the most recent issue that made me more apprehensive was the news of Amazon ( AMZN ) acquiring Globalstar ( GSAT ). It may seem like something not very important for now; at the moment, Verizon has many more reasons to worry about traditional competition than about new players, but I believe that in the next 10 years this can change the game a lot and be a point of disruption. Satellites As A Complement To Verizon Business Model Before talking exactly about satellites and whether Amazon’s investment is a headwind or not, I will take a step back and talk about Verizon’s momentum. It is a reasonable momentum for Verizon; I do not think it is possible to say it is super challenging or great. Looking at the operational side, fixed wireless access broadband growing 25% draws attention, but wireless retail is growing 0.6% in connections, and this even with good metrics such as retail postpaid phone net adds of ~616 thousand (versus 504 in Q4 of 2024). Earnings Release - Verizon But looking at the 2026 guidance , we have a very modest number, nothing much. Around 2%~3% of revenue growth, with an adj. EPS of 4% or 5%. That is, we are already talking about a Verizon that is not in that super favorable market momentum; there is not a huge tailwind. In fact, I believe it is much easier to argue that we are in a delicate moment. As much as the numbers seem solid enough for such a mature company,...

Getty Images By Ewa Manthey, Commodities Strategist Escalating supply disruptions across Gulf smelters have shifted the aluminium market from a logistics shock into a significant deficit, with limited near-term recovery and risks skewed to the upside Supply shock deepens as Gulf smelters cut output The aluminium market has moved into a significant deficit following further escalation in the Middle East. What initially appeared as a disruption to shipping and logistics has now evolved into a material supply shock, with multiple Gulf smelters operating well below capacity. Recent developments include the halt of operations at Emirates Global Aluminium’s Al Taweelah smelter, a sharp reduction in output at Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), and continued reduced operating rates at Qatalum. While the Middle East accounts for roughly 9% of global aluminium production, it represents a much larger share of seaborne supply. As a result, disruptions in the region have a significant impact on market availability and pricing. Disruptions have intensified significantly since our previous note . In mid-March, we estimated that around 560kt of annual capacity was affected, including roughly 300kt at Alba and 260kt at Qatalum. With Alba now operating at around 30% of capacity and Qatalum at roughly 60%, the implied affected capacity has risen to around 3Mt – nearly half of the region’s production. Based on current operating rates, the aluminium market would be in a deficit of close to 2.9Mt if disruptions persisted through the remainder of the year. However, at elevated prices, we expect demand destruction, destocking and a partial supply response from China to offset part of the supply shock, resulting in a base case deficit of around 2Mt. Base case: disruption largely priced In our base case, disruption peaks early and gradually eases through the year, in line with our energy market outlook . While supply remains constrained, a combination of demand destruction, inventory drawdowns and in...

House Effort To End Trump's Iran War Fails By One Vote: Guess The Lone GOP Dissenter Two parallel war-related votes in the House and Senate reveal growing dismay and political fractures over President Trump's Iran war, as the Strait of Hormuz remains locked down and ceasefire still seems distant. The Republican-controlled House voted Thursday to reject a resolution ordering the White House to end the war with Iran , as Memorial Day approaches and Americans are anxious over gas prices and general rising costs at the grocery store . The vote was 213-214 , almost entirely along party lines, with dominant Republicans overwhelmingly sticking with Trump - not so much as allowing formal robust Congressional debate. There was one notable exception who broke ranks. via Reuters The lone Republican outlier was Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky , who voted for the measure to impose Constitutional guardrails over what the Executive can do in terms of waging war overseas. But on the other side, a lone Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted against it. Additionally, Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, merely registered a vote of "present" while three Republicans did not vote at all. Rep. Gregory Meeks of NY (Dem) pushed the measure which "directs the President to remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran." "Donald Trump has dragged the American people into a war of choice , launched without congressional authorization. The president has no coherent strategy, and this open-ended, undefined military engagement is precisely what the War Powers Resolution was designed to restrain," Meeks said on the floor before the vote. “Every day we delay, we inch closer to a conflict with no exit ramp.” -- NBC But it shows waning support amid fears the US is getting bogged down in a new quagmire in the Middle East (which we should note Trump strongly and eloquently campaigned against ). Per Politico : It marks the second time the House has declined to inte...

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) shares are down around 20% to start the year, as of this writing. The company was caught up in worries about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on software-as-a-service (SaaS) companies and over its AI infrastructure spending. While Microsoft's enterprise software business should largely be protected from AI disruption, given how ingrained it is, and its cloud computing is growing fast and has big commitments from OpenAI, it's not the best opportunity in the cloud space, in my view. The reason is that the company has neither a top AI model nor top-tier custom AI chips, which leaves it at a disadvantage. Microsoft was smart to invest and team up with OpenAI at the start of the AI boom, but its reliance on its models has also set it back a bit. Meanwhile, it is still very early in the process of developing custom AI chips, and remains behind in this area, as well. Continue reading
