Welcome to Bloomberg’s Texas Edition — covering all the industries and people driving America’s second-largest economy, from finance and oil to tech and sports. Join us each week for an inside look at Texas through a Bloomberg lens. Sign up here if you’re not already on the list. The world’s eighth-largest economy earned a Valentine from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent the other day. He was in Dallas hours after the US Supreme Court struck down his boss’s signature tariff regime. And right about the same time that President Donald Trump was blasting the justices’ decision, Bessent was gushing about Texas. “Texas is what a diversified economy looks like,” Bessent said in a speech at the Old Parkland complex to the Economic Club of Dallas, citing advanced manufacturing, technology and finance. He added: “In many respects, Texas embodies what this administration is working to build nationally.” Bessent’s remarks landed at the intersection of policy and politics in this midterm year. While job growth slowed in 2025 , Texas boasts a swelling population, wins in corporate relocations, a resurgent energy industry and a data-center boom. GDP growth ranks No. 5 among the states since 2022, made all the more impressive by Texas’ size (it’s behind only California in state GDP, and would rank ahead of Canada and Russia, among others, if it were an independent country.) Trump himself is due to visit Corpus Christi on Friday, a week after Bessent’s Dallas foray. The praise and the presidential attention were a reminder of how Republicans are banking on a reliably red state with control of the House and Senate at stake in November, and they’ve been trying to build pre-primary enthusiasm . On the Democratic side, the March 3 ballot is a face-off between US Representative Jasmine Crockett and state Representative James Talarico. We have a team of reporters in Texas ready for next week’s primary. And look for a special edition of this newsletter. The Fine Line Dan Pickering , chief ...

tupungato/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Thursday morning, we received fourth-quarter results from Hertz ( HTZ ). The rental car company has been looking to turn around its business after a failed bet on electric vehicles led to significant losses. The latest results indicated that things are improving, but the company still faces a number of headwinds as we progress through 2026. Previous Coverage of the Name It was nearly a year ago that I last covered the company, right as the overall market was getting worried over President Trump's global tariff strategy . Hertz shares had jumped on hopes that rising used car prices would lower the company's depreciation expenses and lead to better resale values. However, things haven't worked out totally as expected, as since then, the stock has only risen about 6.7%, compared to a more than 24% surge in the S&P 500. A Look at the Q4 Results and Recent News For the final period of 2025, Hertz reported revenues of $2.028 billion. While this number was down $12 million over the prior year period, it did beat street estimates by about $100 million. The company reported a small increase in average rentable vehicles, but it had a slightly lower revenue per unit figure. While the International segment showed about 10% top-line growth, the much larger Americas division showed a 3% decline. Hertz was able to narrow its losses quite a bit in the quarter, mainly due to a 21% drop in monthly depreciation per vehicle. The company also reduced its direct vehicle and operating expenses while also showing a decline in interest costs. However, the company still lost nearly $200 million, and this figure included a significant benefit from the reduction in the fair value of its public warrants. For the year, the net loss was $747 million. In the current quarter, management expects a mid-single-digit revenue increase, well above the street's estimate for less than 2%. The company believes its commercial strategy is paying off, and it is focus...

What potentially justifies paying $129.99 for Razer's Laptop Sleeve 16" are the pair of wireless charging pads integrated into its cover flap. While you're out and about, it can protect a laptop up to 16-inches in size, and when you find a remote spot to sit down and work, you can also plonk down and charge your phone and earbuds. The padded sleeve has a plush microfiber lining and reinforced edges to help absorb some of the shock of an accidental drop, but it's thin enough to stick underneath your laptop to protect its undersi … Read the full story at The Verge.

Officials from the US and Iran began a third round of indirect nuclear talks in Switzerland today to try to prevent a new Middle East war, then broke for consultations. Conversations will resume this evening, Iranian state TV reported. The two parties have been locked in a tense standoff over the Islamic Republic’s atomic activities for months, and are negotiating through Oman at its embassy in Geneva. President Donald Trump has threatened an attack if the effort fails, and Iran has vowed to respond, sparking fears of a conflict that could embroil Israel and Gulf Arab nations. A US military build-up in the region — the biggest since the 2003 invasion of Iraq — is set to receive a boost in the coming days when a second aircraft carrier arrives. But satellite images show how hard an easy victory in Iran would be. Energy traders are watching for signs of disruption to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway off Iran’s southern coast that connects key oil producers in the Persian Gulf to world markets. Benchmark Brent is up around 17% since the start of the year. With Trump’s March 1-6 deadline for a deal approaching, the window for diplomacy is closing. What You Need to Know Today The US is becoming ever more dependent on its closest allies to fund its swollen debt burden, exposing a vulnerability in the $30 trillion Treasuries market. Countries that are aligned with Washington bought $463.9 billion of Treasuries in 2025, the biggest annual net purchase since at least 2016, according to Bloomberg’s analysis of US Treasury data. The figures also showed that countries least united with the US offloaded the most American debt in six years . Non-allies and neutral nations sold $673 billion of Treasuries between 2016 and 2025. The pivot away from US government bonds has gained momentum as Trump’s unpredictable decision-making rattles investors, even though most market participants say US debt is likely to remain the world’s benchmark safe asset. Sook emphasized the progress on the TEGNA acquisition, indicating all regulatory filings were submitted and responses provided, with expectations for closing by the end of Q2 2026. He also pointed to the strength of Nexstar’s sports-focused strategy, noting, "The CW finished the year as the tenth most watched ad-supported network and the second fastest-growing network overall, delivering a 19% year-over-year increase in viewership. In 2025, we improved the network's cash flow by an impressive 32%." Sook indicated profitability for The CW is expected by Q4 2026. Sook underscored digital growth, stating digital revenue grew high single digits in 2025 and is expected to surpass national advertising revenue in 2026. Top priorities for 2026 are "digital optimization and expense rationalization." Executive VP & CFO Lee Gliha provided guidance: "We believe Nexstar's stand-alone 2026 adjusted EBITDA will be in the range of $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion." Gliha outlined expectations for continued distribution revenue growth, a low double-digit market share of broadcast political advertising, and further cost reductions. She also stated, "We expect The CW will continue to reduce its losses by another 30% in 2026 from 2025 levels and achieve profitability in the fourth quarter." Outlook Nexstar projects 2026 adjusted EBITDA in the $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion range. Distribution revenue growth is expected to be in the l...

Earnings Call Insights: Fomento Económico Mexicano, S.A.B. de C.V. (FMX) Q4 2025 Management View CEO Jose Antonio Garza-Laguera highlighted an improved performance at OXXO Mexico, stating "same-store sales for Proximity Americas approaching the mid-single-digit growth range at 4.4% and traffic that while still negative, 0.6% was markedly better than what we saw earlier in the year." He attributed the recovery to affordability-focused initiatives and tactical actions to regain competitiveness against traditional trade, especially in core categories like snacks and tobacco. The company plans to leverage lessons learned and continue focusing on traffic recovery and value proposition enhancements in 2026. Garza-Laguera described a strategic shift towards a leaner organizational structure, now fully implemented at OXXO Mexico and being rolled out at Proximity Americas and FEMSA Corporate. He pointed to a renewed focus on cash flow discipline and capital allocation rigor: "we are putting in place a renewed focus on cash flow rigor, pushing the teams to think about cash with an owner's mentality and exerting full control over the levers that drive cash." The CEO outlined growth and expansion plans, including increasing OXXO Mexico's store base by more than 1/3 over the next decade, a 1/3 expansion of Bara in 2026, approximately 100 net new OXXO stores in Brazil (over 15% growth), and a 20% increase in OXXO Colombia stores in 2026. Garza-Laguera announced a structural realignment of Spin, integrating digital and physical channels to focus on OXXO Mexico and postponing a full banking license application. Juan Carlos Guillermety will move to an advisory role, with Rodrigo Garcia Jacques taking leadership of Spin. CFO Martin Arias Yaniz reported, "During the fourth quarter, total revenues increased by 5.7% year-over-year, reflecting a combination of improved trends in Proximity Americas and continued growth outside of Mexico, particularly in Coca-Cola FEMSA and Valora." He not...
