A Chinese laser chipmaker surpassed Kweichow Moutai Co. to become the mainland’s highest-priced stock, highlighting a shift in investor appetite toward advanced technology and away from old economy leaders. Yuanjie Semiconductor Technology Co. ’s shares climbed as much as 9.6% to an all-time peak of 1,439 yuan on Friday. Meanwhile, China’s top distiller slid the most in a year after posting its first annual drop in sales and profit in two decades. Yuanjie’s rally reflects broader enthusiasm for China’s artificial intelligence supply chain. The firm’s laser chips provide the light that enables optical communication, which AI data centers rely on to move massive amounts of data between servers. The stock has more than doubled this year, while the tech-heavy STAR 50 Index has gained 5.8%. At the same time, a gauge of onshore consumer staples companies has dropped more than 4% on subdued domestic demand. Chinese optical stocks also jumped on Friday after Zhongji Innolight Co. ’s first-quarter earnings exceeded expectations and Goldman Sachs struck a more upbeat tone on the sector. The firm, a key customer of Yuanjie, rose as much as 5.8% to a record high.

skynesher/E+ via Getty Images According to the March employment report , released last week by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the jobs economy in the United States continues to stagnate as economic growth slows and the US-Israeli war on Iran pushes up energy prices. According to the report, the establishment survey showed an increase of 178,000 jobs month to month, but the household survey showed a decrease of 64,000 workers over the same period. March’s household survey marks the third month in a row of negative job growth. Over the past year, total household employment has fallen by 661,000, with an average monthly drop of 55,000. Employment measured by the establishment survey was less dire but showed very anemic growth. If employment numbers over the past year are any indication, March’s job growth number of 178,000 is likely to be revised downward by tens of thousands. In any case, the current numbers show that, even with March’s current optimistic jobs growth total, employment rose by an average of only 21,000 jobs per month since March of last year. These numbers likely reflect the data behind the Federal Reserve’s most recent report on economic projections, which suggests that US job growth has essentially fallen to zero overall. In March’s FOMC press conference, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell noted the lack of job growth, as described by Yahoo Finance: “Effectively, there’s zero net job creation in the private sector,” after accounting for revisions over the past six months, Powell said. “But actually, that looks like that’s about what the economy needs, in terms of dealing with very, very low — nonexistent, really — growth in the labor force, which of course we’ve never had in our history.” Notably, this lack of job growth, combined with a declining labor force, helps explain why the unemployment rate has generally remained flat in recent months. In spite of so little job creation, the unemployment rate for March actually fell slightly to 4.3 percent,...

Japan’s weather agency has formally adopted a name for sizzling-hot days ahead of what is set to be another scorcher of a summer. Days with a maximum temperature of 40C (104F) or higher will be referred to as “kokushobi,” the Japan Meteorological Agency said in a statement on Friday. The name, which means “severely hot day” but has no official translation, was chosen after almost half a million people participated in a vote. As one of the most disaster-prone nations, Japan has over the decades developed a sophisticated and tightly regulated system for communicating risks from weather and natural catastrophes. Designating an official label for extreme-temperature days could help shape how governments and corporations cope with the dangers of record-breaking heat. Countries and organizations worldwide are preparing for a hotter future as climate change continues to lead to extreme weather patterns. JMA will use the term to “effectively raise awareness and encourage caution” among the public, the agency said. Of the top 20 highest temperatures on record, eight were recorded from late July to early August 2025, according to JMA data . Public health consequences have been severe, with a record 100,000 people sent to hospitals due to heat stroke during a five-month period last year. The new label expands Japan’s official vocabulary for spiking mercury levels, adding to the existing moniker of “extremely hot day” for temperatures exceeding 35C. Days of 30C or higher are designated as “midsummer days,” while from 25C they are “summer days.” Read More: Should Heat Waves Have Names? Meteorologists Are Unconvinced The public had other suggestions for potential names, including “sweat-drenched heat day,” “sauna day” and even “stay at home day,” JMA said in the press release. The weather bureau has already warned of elevated temperatures this summer, particula...
