franckreporter/iStock via Getty Images Markets are weathering the unprecedented geopolitical shock from Iran tensions relatively well, with equity declines staying contained at around 2% and the central investment case remaining to buy any significant dips, according to Standard Chartered Bank's Steve Brice in an interview with CNBC. While acknowledging elevated uncertainty, Brice noted that equities could potentially fall 5-10% before presenting a buying opportunity. The analyst emphasized that markets entered this period of fear from a position of strength. “We’re really much in a Goldilocks economy. Growth was holding up remarkably well. Inflation was actually coming down in the U.S., albeit relatively slowly. We’re expecting Federal Reserve rate cuts. Earnings are holding up,” Brice explained. However, sustaining higher oil prices could gradually erode this favorable economic backdrop. Steve indicated that investors are now focused on assessing potential drawdowns across different scenarios. “I think that’s what people are trying to figure out and say, okay, what could the drawdown in equity markets be in a central scenario, in a tail risk scenario, and how should we play this from that perspective,” he said. Brice maintained his pro-risk stance while monitoring developments closely. He characterized the current situation as "generally being a short-lived environment, although it is very different to anything that we’ve seen before.” He acknowledged the need to remain agile and willing to change positions if conditions deteriorate further. The analyst highlighted key differences between this situation and previous Middle East interventions. “Previous bouts have been, when we had military intervention in the Middle East, it’s usually been boots on the ground and been able to lock it down relatively quickly. This is a very different scenario, and where retaliation across the Middle East is pretty elevated at the moment,” he noted. While the central case remains in...

Qatar shut down liquefied natural gas production at the world’s largest export facility after it was targeted in an Iranian drone attack, sending European gas prices surging more than 50% and rattling global energy markets. The unprecedented halt marks a dramatic escalation in a conflict that now threatens energy security worldwide. European benchmark gas futures jumped the most in nearly four years, after QatarEnergy confirmed Monday that output had been suspended. Tankers had already largely stopped transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global fuel shipments. QatarEnergy’s Ras Laffan plant supplies about a fifth of global LNG supply. The situation risks the most serious shock to gas markets since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine four years ago upended global energy trade. While Asian countries buy most of the LNG shipped from the Middle East, any disruption would increase competition for alternative supplies — pushing up prices worldwide, including in Europe. The shutdown of the plant “marks an abrupt acceleration in the energy implications of the situation,” said Simone Tagliapietra, an analyst at Bruegel. “The threat to security of supply is here and now. The extent of it will depend on the duration of the shutdown, but we are now into a new scenario.” Shipping risks are compounding the disruption. The Strait of Hormuz is a key shipping route for energy, carrying about a fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas exports. The dramatic slowdown of traffic through the waterway has created major bottlenecks potentially causing fuller storage tanks for QatarEnergy. More than half of the world’s largest maritime insurance clubs will stop providing war-risk cover for vessels entering the Persian Gulf starting Thursday, Bloomberg reported, a move likely to deter cargo loadings in the region. On top of that, Israel on Saturday ordered the temporary closure of some gas-producing capacities, including its biggest Leviathan gas field. That prompted major impor...
