Over the last 50 years, the average S&P 500 member has delivered a 7.7% annualized total return. However, returns among S&P 500 members largely fell into two groups. Companies that paid dividends outperformed the average (9.2% average annual return according to data from Ned Davis Research and Hartford Funds), while those that didn't pay dividends underperformed (4.3%). Meanwhile, the best returns came from dividend growers and initiators (10.2%). The Middle East accounts for around 8% of global aluminium capacity and is heavily reliant on the Strait of Hormuz for both metal exports and alumina imports, with key producers including Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain. The scale of any supply disruption will depend on how long tensions persist, given smelters typically hold around three to four weeks of alumina inventories, meaning short disruptions are manageable – but prolonged disruption would quickly translate into production risk. Even without a full closure of the Strait, higher freight costs, war‑risk insurance, and vessel delays would likely be reflected first in regional premiums. Europe and the US are most exposed, given their reliance on Middle Eastern metal as marginal supply. European premiums look particularly sensitive, given already tight primary availability and elevated duty‑paid and duty‑unpaid premiums. US Midwest premiums are structurally high due to tariffs, limiting near‑term upside but leaving marginal pricing exposed to Gulf-related disruptions. For LME prices, the impact is likely to remain headline-driven, with sustained upside requiring evidence of prolonged disruption. Overall, risks remain skewed toward higher regional premiums, particularly in Europe, rather than a material repricing of global aluminium supply, even if LME prices face offsetting macro headwinds. Thawatchai Chawong/iStock via Getty Images NLY vs. STWD: The pursuit of dividend yield I last analyzed Annaly Capital Stock (NYSE: NLY ) on Nov. 19, 2025, with an article titled “Annaly Capital Q3: Graham P/E And Number Show Attractive Valuation, But Risks Remain.” The analysis served as a review for its FQ3 2025 earnings report (ER) and rated the stock as a hold. Since then, there have been a few new catalysts evolving surrounding both the mREIT sector as a whole and the NLY’s specific operations facing company. In the remainder of this article, I will focus on the top 3 as I see: the earnings updates it provided for its FQ4 2025, its latest dividend declarations, and also the interest rate outlook. These changes have resulted in a headline-grabbing dividend yield of over 12% for NLY as of this writing (see the table below). As many investors come to the mREIT sector looking for yield, I felt it timely to remind investors that it’s crucial to look beyond yield and examine other aspects too. In particular, I found it interesting to compare and contrast NLY with Starwood Property Trust ( STWD ) to illustrate how an mREIT stock with a lower yield could actually offer a better overall return/risk curve under current market conditions. Next, I will explain in detail why the lower yield from STWD (at 10.7%) is strategically more attractive than chasing NLY’s 12%+ in terms of total capital conservation, growth, and also valuation. Seeking Alpha NLY and STWD: Book value preservation For mREIT companies, an important metric – more important than dividend payouts – I suggest investors to focus on is book value, in particular tangible book value (TBV).
