The strikes on Iran over the weekend changed the near-term demand for two markets at once: Defense, specifically missile defense and precision munitions, and oil. Iran retaliated with a barrage of attacks against Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, and Oman, targeting not only Israeli and U.S. military installations but also commercial and civilian targets. Whether or not diplomatic talks are productive, the need for defense systems in the region has only grown. While U.S. and Israeli air and missile defense systems have proven fairly effective thus far, if the conflict continues and Iran counterattacks using missiles and drones aimed at regional targets, existing defense assets will be strained, increasing demand on the military contractors that supply them. When ballistic missiles and one-way drones fly in large salvos, inventory matters; the more the better. Also, missile defense is a layered architecture: Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) "is a highly effective, combat-proven defense against short, medium and intermediate-range ballistic missile threats…designed to intercept targets outside and inside the atmosphere," according to prime contractor Lockheed Martin . Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target (Patriot) surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) made by Raytheon , a unit of RTX, serve a similar role at closer ranges and lower altitudes. Quadrupling THAAD capacity In late January, Lockheed announced a framework agreement to more than quadruple THAAD interceptor capacity. A month ago, Lockheed's CEO Jim Taiclet said, "We are committed to further building on the Department of War's vision for advancing acquisition reform with additional framework agreements for the critical munitions needed by the U.S. military and our allies. [The] agreement to quadruple THAAD production means we will have more interceptors available than ever before to deter our adversaries." The military activity in the Middle East over the pa...

All three establishments, including the gas station, stand on the same half-mile stretch of First Street, an artery that divides the marshy floodplain of the Cedar River to the east from hundreds of acres of cornfields on the west. During historic flooding in 2008, the Cedar River surged 10 feet above its previous record, cresting at 31 feet and wiping out homes and businesses well outside the floodplain. Hat-trick against Villarreal, his first at 18 years and 230 days, made him the youngest Barça player to score a league one Mounir Nasraoui and Sheila Ebana watched their little boy make history while everyone else watched too, which takes getting used to but is the way it is now and forever. A moment before the second half began on Saturday, Hansi Flick came to an agreement with Lamine Yamal, or tried to. The teenager had scored twice – both superb, the second absurd – to put them 2-0 up against Villarreal and the coach had an idea. If we score the third, we’ll take you off, Flick said; if I score the third, we will, Lamine Yamal replied. Twenty minutes later both happened together and that, he laughed after, was “perfect”, so up went the board with his number on and up went 44,256 people too, applauding as he went. Back home, following the game on TV and broadcasting to the world, so did his dad. Lamine Yamal slapped hands with Roony Bardghji, delegate Carlos Naval and Flick, but his eyes were turned towards the stands, looking for his mum. He settled into the bench for a while, saw Robert Lewandowski add another to complete a 4-1 victory and then, when the final whistle sounded, headed back out, collected the match ball from Naval and went to find her. “This is yours,” he said, cameras catching another conversation. “I’m going to take it inside and get everyone to sign it, then bring it to you.” Sheila hugged him hard, kissed her “handsome boy”, and waited for him to return so they could go for dinner. lyash01/iStock via Getty Images European natural gas prices could surge 130% if shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is halted for one month, as benchmarks have barely priced in risk premiums associated with the Iran conflict, Goldman Sachs analysts said Monday. "A hypothetical longer disruption of natural gas supply transit through the Strait of Hormuz lasting more than two months would likely lift European natural gas prices above €100/MWh ($35/MMBtu) to trigger more significant global gas demand destruction," Goldman said in a note. European benchmark gas futures jumped the most since the energy crisis in 2022 following news that Qatar, the Middle East's largest liquefied natural gas supplier, halted liquefied natural gas production after military attacks on its Ras Laffan complex, which covers about ~20% of global LNG supply. European benchmark futures jumped as much as 28% on Monday, the largest increase since August 2023, after tankers had largely stopped transiting Hormuz over the weekend. Asian countries buy most of the LNG shipped from the Middle East, but a disruption will increase competition for alternative supplies, lifting prices worldwide, including in Europe. U.S. natural gas futures rose more than 7% in sympathy with global gas prices Monday before dropping back; front-month Nymex gas ( NG1:COM ) for April delivery recently was +3.5% at $2.96/MMBtu. Meanwhile, more than half of the world’s largest maritime insurance clubs will cease covering war risks for ships entering the Persian Gulf starting Thursday, Bloomberg reported. Michael Saylor’s Strategy Inc. bought more than $200 million worth of Bitcoin, turning to common stock to finance the bulk of its acquisitions, despite promises to lean on its perpetual preferred shares. The company, formerly known as MicroStrategy, bought 3,015 Bitcoin between Feb. 23 and March 1, according to a regulatory filing Monday. Roughly $230 million of the purchase was funded through sales of Class A common stock. The remaining $7 million — about 3% of the total — came from at-the-market sales of its “Stretch” preferred shares, which were sold at a discount to face value. It marks an acceleration from the previous week ’s $40 million of Bitcoin purchases, made entirely through common shares, despite management previously signaling Strategy would prioritize sales of Stretch. Continual sales of common shares dilutes the value of those held by existing shareholders. In order to appease common holders, Strategy has pushed to sell more preferred stock, effectively shifting some risk to investors willing to accept price volatility in exchange for a steady payout. But amid the latest crypto-market selloff sales of the dividend-paying securities have stalled. The company has sold about $813 million in common stock and $92 million of perpetual preferred shares to finance its past six weekly Bitcoin purchases. Strategy’s common stock — which is widely considered a Bitcoin proxy and often moves in tandem with the cryptocurrency — is down nearly 50% over the past 12 months. The preferred shares offer investors a variable dividend, currently set at 11.25%, with the rate reset monthly. The company on Saturday said it raised Stretch’s dividend by 25 basis points to 11.5%. “The company is going to engage in an aggressive campaign to make more investors aware of Stretch’s attractive yield and Bitcoin overcollateralization that should play out in the coming months,” said Mark Palmer , an analyst at Benchmark Co., who rates the company a buy. “Stretch traded up to par late l...
