( RYAM ) on Monday said it began a formal review of strategic alternatives aimed at increasing shareholder value, while also announcing the immediate resignation of President and Chief Executive Officer Scott Sutton. Its shares slipped 2% in premarket trading. The company said it has hired Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC as financial adviser and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz as legal counsel to assist with the review. RYAM said the process will examine a range of options, including a possible sale of all or part of the company, a strategic investment, merger, other business combination or continuation of its standalone strategy. The company said the review follows unsolicited expressions of interest it recently received. Following Sutton’s departure, the board created an interim Office of the Chief Executive Officer to oversee operations during the transition. The group includes Chief Financial Officer Marcus J. Moeltner, Vice President of Manufacturing Operations Michael Osborne, Senior Vice President of Biomaterials Christian Ribeyrolle and General Counsel R. Colby Slaughter. Board Chair Lisa M. Palumbo said the company is also working with an executive search firm to identify a permanent chief executive. RYAM said a committee of the board will support the interim leadership team during the strategic review. The company said it has not set a timetable for completing the process and may not provide further updates unless disclosure is required or deemed appropriate. The last time I broke down this company (at the beginning of September 2025), I rated the stock as a Buy and opened a position myself. It came as a great surprise to me, as I couldn’t understand this company from a consumer standpoint. I thought that after looking at the books, I would want to short LULU, but I was wrong, and the numbers together with the valuation multiple were compelling. Here is what I said back then: This is the first time when my “investor opinion” did not align with my “consumer opinion,” and I realized that while most likely, I won’t ever buy Lululemon’s training pants, I will buy a stock of this company. Fast forward to April 2026, where I have a full set from lululemon, not just training pants, which I bought shortly after opening a position, just to see for myself what the appeal is. After wearing it many times, I have to say, I absolutely loved it. Whenever I’m in it, everyone asks where I got it from, and I’m happy to share that it was from LULU. My husband also got $180 work trousers for himself last weekend, and he says they're his most comfortable pants for the office. Everything seems great, except for the fact that after all the events of February and March this year, together with the earnings from lululemon, I can’t say the stock trades at an enormous discount. Now, as I have become an admirer of the clothing, I’m considering closing my position and moving my money into other companies. Previous Coverage I have to be honest, this isn’t a great position to be in, since the stock has made a tiny return in the past 7 months (my average buying price is $163.83, and the price as I’m writing it is $168), but I want to stay realistic. As this experience shows, a great product doesn’t equal a great business, and vice versa.
