brightstars/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images I'm turning bullish on ICICI Bank Limited ( IBN ). Its 4QFY26 (YE March) beat and likely FY2027 financial improvement have made me optimistic about this name. IBN's mixed Q3 metrics were the focus of my prior January 20, 2026, update . Latest Earnings Were A Favorable Surprise The group revealed its financials on April 18. IBN bounced back from a -4% YoY bottom-line contraction in 3QFY26 to register a +9% rise for 4QFY26. The actual INR137 billion figure exceeded the consensus projection by 7.9% . I've identified several factors behind the bank's beat. One of them is loan acceleration. IBN's Q4 credit book was 15.8% larger at INR15.5 trillion on a YoY basis. That's much better than the preceding quarter's +11.5%. The "Rural" portfolio witnessed 26% growth in the recent three-month period. I believe this segment leveraged a wider network. The firm's number of non-urban outlets went up 7%, or 115 units, in the past year. Separately, IBN's funding cost declined by 57bps from 4QFY2025's 5.00% to 4QFY2026's 4.32%. That helped to lift its "Net Interest Income/NII" by 8% to INR230B during the same period. At the analyst briefing , management attributed the NIM expansion to "deposit repricing." It's reasonable for me to assume that the delayed effects of rate cuts on client balances (versus loans) are starting to materialize. The bank's provisioning expense also fell 89% year-on-year to INR960 million for the final quarter of FY26. In my view, the improved asset profile meant that a smaller buffer was required. Its "Non-Performing Loan" or "NPL" ratio decreased by 9bps for Jan-Mar '25 to 0.33% in the recent three-month timeframe. IBN has become leaner too. The company's "Cost-to-Income/CIR" metric dropped from 3QFY2026's 40.8% to 4QFY26's 39.9%. In this period, the increase in staff costs moderated from +12.5% to +8.8%. Its earlier investor slides drew attention to IBN's online "onboarding platform DigiEase" and "process decong...

chameleonseye/iStock Editorial via Getty Images PayPal Is Having A Good Run In April In case you were wondering, April has actually been a pretty good month for the stock of PayPal Holdings, Inc. ( PYPL ). It has clearly benefited from improved optimism in the financial sector ( XLF ), as the sector came under tremendous pressure earlier in the year. In addition, solid earnings from Wall Street’s leading banks have largely assured us that the US economy has stayed incredibly resilient in Q1. Of course, it might still be too early for us to assess the damage from the Iranian war on the US economy. Yet, the print from the financial sector has largely shrugged off such downcast worries. For PYPL investors, this represents a pivotal moment for them to decide whether they should return more aggressively right now as the stock is yet again showing bottoming signals. PayPal's 2026 Reset Year Narrative Hasn't Unnerved The Market Or should they wait for the rest of 2026 to pan out, as new CEO Enrique Lores has also recently taken over the top job at the fintech leader? PayPal Beyond 2026 event (PayPal) Early signs from the PayPal Beyond 2026 event indicate that the company is expected to improve execution speed and also up the ante on “operational efficiency.” With the company’s Q1 report due later on May 5 , I believe we will get critical insights into just what this means for investors to take away from it. Taking on the leadership mantle at a time when the stock appears to be climbing out of its nadir is a momentous event, no less. It offers Lores an incredible opportunity to set the stage and agenda to nail a more decisive rebound when sentiment is still arguably pretty delicate. Given how cagey investors headed into the February lows, as PayPal terminated its previous CEO, the mood has swung back to a more positive note. Not jubilant yet; it's too early. But, I guess it's still worth calling out. Furthermore, it has come amid getting swirled with the potential buyout ru...

As millions of Americans face an affordability crisis, the Justice Department is homing in on the agriculture industry, focusing on the rising costs faced by farmers and ranchers and soaring prices of key grocery staples like beef and eggs. The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation in recent months into how prices are set in cattle auctions, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The DOJ lawyers investigating National Beef Inc. , Cargill Inc. , Tyson Foods Inc. and JBS NV are looking to determine whether the companies reached illegal agreements over how they purchase cattle from ranchers, said some of the people, who asked not to be named discussing a confidential matter. The beef investigation — which also involves a separate probe by a team of civil DOJ attorneys — comes after President Donald Trump demanded an inquiry in November amid record prices. Ranchers have long complained about anticompetitive conduct by the four companies, which control about 85% of the US market, according to the Agriculture Department. The criminal aspect of the probe raises the stakes considerably for the companies and their executives, who face the prospect of steep fines and prison time. Neither the companies or their employees have been accused of any wrongdoing and probes don’t always lead to charges or lawsuits being filed. The companies maintain they are operating at a loss. A previous investigation into alleged price-fixing during the Covid-19 pandemic closed without action. A Justice Department spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. National Beef, Cargill, Tyson and JBS didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. The DOJ opened a civil antitrust probe of the four meatpackers during Trump’s first term that was continued by the Biden administration, though it never filed a lawsuit. Gail Slater , the first DOJ antitrust chief during Trump’s second term, closed that investigation — which had gone stale — before opening ...

The war in Iran is pushing up inflation expectations, after sentiment had been improving prior to the conflict, survey data released Monday by the Bank of Canada shows. Canadian firms consistently hiked their expectations for inflation in the weeks after the war in the Middle East began, according to the data. Meanwhile, more than 80% of households surveyed said they expect the war to harm the Canadian economy and raise inflation. Firms raised their one year-ahead expectations for annual inflation to 3.8% at the end of March, from 3% in February, the bank said. The impact on longer-term inflation expectations was more muted: two-year ahead and five-year ahead expectations rose to 3.4% and 3% respectively, from 2.8%. The central bank’s main business and consumer surveys for the first quarter were completed prior to the conflict. However, after the war broke out Feb. 28, the bank made follow-up calls to firms most likely to be impacted by higher energy prices, as well as a subset of consumers. The bank said these follow-ups with firms also “prompted significant shifts” in the outlook for inflation. “Most businesses had revised up their expectations for input prices, mentioning specifically fuel, freight, fertilizers and exchange rates,” the bank said, adding that fuel-intensive businesses — including agriculture, oil and gas, transportation and some manufacturing — were already seeing higher prices. At the same time, firms told the central bank that there are barriers to raising prices, leading to a partial pass-through of higher costs. “Changes to selling prices were less common,” the bank said. Firms listed a weak demand environment, constrained consumer budgets, competition, pre-existing contracts that limit price adjustments, and limited pricing power as factors limiting pass-through. Businesses also suggested they expect to or already are absorbing “part or all of the increase in their costs.” The follow-up surveys match the central bank’s communications from its...

DoJ Opens Criminal Probe Into Meatpacking Cartel As Food Stocks Slide Shares of Tyson Foods and Smithfield Foods fell in late-morning trading in New York after The Wall Street Journal reported that the Justice Department's antitrust division has opened a criminal probe into major meatpackers. The report follows President Trump's push for an investigation into meatpackers as supermarket beef prices remain near record highs. Criminal antitrust cases are typically brought for alleged price-fixing, collusion, or bid-rigging. While the DoJ previously disclosed an investigation into beef companies after Trump called for action, it had not provided details on whether it was criminal. In early November, Trump publicly stated , "I have asked the DOJ to immediately begin an investigation into the Meat Packing Companies who are driving up the price of Beef through illicit collusion, price fixing, and price manipulation." "We will always protect our American ranchers, and they are being blamed for what is being done by majority foreign-owned meat packers, who artificially inflate prices and jeopardize the security of our nation's food supply," Trump continued. Beef prices at supermarkets have soared to record highs after years of drought, and elevated input prices led to the smallest U.S. herd in a generation. Trump's tariffs on Brazil, a major beef exporter, have also curbed imports. Also, last year, Trump suggested the U.S. would buy Argentine beef to increase domestic supplies and curb higher prices for Americans. This, in turn, angered U.S. cattle ranchers. Shares of top publicly traded meatpackers, including Tyson Foods and Smithfield Foods, fell after the WSJ report hit. Tyson Foods Smithfield Foods Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has pointed out that " Four meat packers control 85 percent of the meat processed in the U.S ." Meanwhile, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and 12 other senators have proposed legislation that would force the nation's largest meatpacke...

Their method is somewhat bold . Instead of using traditional medicines, they're developing a pharmaceutical-grade psilocybin product (the active ingredient in what pop culture refers to as "magic mushrooms") under strict clinical and pharmaceutical conditions. Their main treatment under development is COMP360 and works more like a guided therapy session. CMPS: Pipeline-stage company with no sales yet. (Seeking Alpha) When it comes to making money, they mostly aren’t yet. They’re still in the clinical trial phase, which is normal for biotech companies developing new treatments. However, over the weekend, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to speed up access to research and treatments involving psychedelic drugs. This could make it easier for patients to access substances like psilocybin, ibogaine, LSD, and MDMA in the near future. Now, after going over the data and fundamentals, I’m bullish on the shares, but it’s a conviction rooted more in long-term potential than near-term certainty, with meaningful risks still in play. Bull Case Activated… and Immediately Questionable On April 18, Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Food and Drug Administration to review psychedelic drugs and reduce enforcement barriers by the Drug Enforcement Administration and other federal agencies so the scientific community can conduct research on these substances. In addition, the executive order instructed the FDA to issue Priority Review Vouchers for psychedelic drugs that receive Breakthrough Therapy Designation and meet the criteria under the National Priority Voucher Program. According to FDA Commissioner Marty Makary , three vouchers will be issued to psychedelic drugs next week, and drugs that are consistent with national priorities will have a much shorter time frame for revi...
