New Zealand’s target of doubling primary exports by 2034 remains in place even as the stellar growth of recent years is tipped to slow in the face of geopolitical and weather challenges. Overall exports of food and fiber are estimated to rise 6% to NZ$64.3 billion ($37 billion) in the 12 months through June 30, the Ministry for Primary Industries said in its semi-annual Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries published Thursday. That represents 20% growth in just two years as farmers and growers benefit from high prices and robust pastures. A lower currency has also helped, as have new free trade agreements signed with the UK and European Union, officials said. But sales are expected to slow 1% in 2026-27, and will grow only modestly to NZ$70.1 billion by 2030, the document shows. That makes reaching the government’s aspirational target of more than NZ$100 billion by 2034 challenging. “The government continues to have the backs of rural New Zealand,” Agriculture Minister Todd McClay said. “We are fully committed to doubling the value of exports within 10 years.” MPI shares that ambition but cautions global markets will be competitive and testing in coming years, while the high pasture growth farmers have enjoyed may not repeat as an El Nino weather pattern looms later in the year. “We think export prices will hold well” despite the global economic uncertainty, Director General Ray Smith said at a presentation Thursday at the National Fieldays agricultural event near the North Island city of Hamilton. “That El Nino forecast is going to mean it’s probably a bit drier across the country and probably that means production levels won’t be as great as you saw in this year.” “You can expect those combination of things just to flatten out the growth path a bit in the next year, but then we kind of pull back up in the years after that,” he said. Primary exports encompass dairy, meat, wool, fruit, forestry and seafood and make up 80% of all New Zealand’s overseas sales. ...

When it became clear that SpaceX was headed toward its initial public offering (IPO), most investors could reasonably expect it to be one of the largest ones in recent memory. However, few would've predicted it would become the largest IPO in stock market history. SpaceX is set to sell 555,555,555 shares at $135 each during its IPO on June 12, raising $75 billion and starting with a valuation of around $1.77 trillion. And while beginning your public debut as the world's eighth most valuable public company (based on market caps on June 8) is quite the feat, the valuation itself isn't the most jarring number. Let's take a look at what it is. Continue reading
