Readers respond to an editorial on difficulties with replicability of results in social science research Your editorial on social science research ( 15 April ) highlights the poor replicability of results, and the misuse of this by some to dismiss all social science. As was indicated, in a field as complex as human behaviour, poor replicability can be due to many factors: methodology, misused statistics, variations in sample characteristics and so on. There is one factor underlying much of this, not much discussed, which is a dearth of observation of human behaviour in everyday environments in the same manner as scientists would observe any other species in order to find out what the behaviour is and so what needs to be understood. With shares down 19% since the start of 2026, Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI) has lost much of the hype that pushed it to an all-time high of $56 in late 2025. Investors have generally lost interest in the quantum computing story , and markets are distracted by the geopolitical crisis in Iran, which is broadly hurting stock market performance. That said, Rigetti's core thesis remains largely unchanged. Let's dig deeper into the pros and cons of the stock to decide how the company's shares might perform over the next half-decade and beyond. The past year was a breakout period for Rigetti Computing, and this was largely due to major advancements for the industry as a whole. In December 2024, Google announced the release of Willow, a state-of-the-art quantum chip capable of correcting its own mistakes and outperforming one of the world's most powerful supercomputers on a benchmark test. Albania’s ambassador to the UK, Uran Ferizi, takes exception to media reports that he says selectively focus on the criminality of Albanians • Report: Albanians in UK scapegoated by rightwing media and politicians, says ambassador These are challenging times in Britain. Economic pressure has a long history of finding a foreign face to blame. For several years now, that face has been Albanian – caricatured by certain media outlets and politicians in ways that are neither fair nor, frankly, very British. The statistics most often cited do not bear scrutiny. For example, the Telegraph’s claim in 2024 that one in 50 Albanians in the UK was in prison was derived by selectively narrowing the total Albanian population in the UK by multiple factors, producing a ratio designed to alarm rather than inform. When adjusted for age, sex, income and residency status, the figure collapses to the British average. Continue reading...

Chris Huhne points out that the UK is not limited to a choice of North Sea drilling or more imports of liquefied natural gas Nils Pratley is right to highlight the continuing role of gas in the UK energy system and the risks of growing dependence on imported liquefied natural gas ( The UK needs more North Sea gas, not greater reliance on US imports, 14 April ). As he notes, gas will remain essential for heating and power system resilience for years to come, and relying on volatile global markets leaves the UK exposed to price shocks and disruption. But the choice is not limited to more North Sea drilling or more imports. There is a third, often-overlooked option that supports farmers and rural communities while using our waste to make secure homegrown energy. Produced from organic wastes and injected into the existing gas grid, biomethane is fully domestic, low carbon, storable and dispatchable when needed. Continue reading...

Andrew Harnik/Getty Images News The Pentagon on Tuesday released additional details of President Donald Trump’s proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal 2027, a request that would mark the biggest annual increase in military spending since World War II if approved by Congress. The proposal combines a base request of $1.15 trillion with a separate $350 billion supplemental package that would require additional legislative approval, similar to the budget process used last year. Defense officials said the plan introduces a new spending category labeled “presidential priorities,” which includes Golden Dome missile defense, artificial intelligence, data systems, drone programs and investments aimed at strengthening the U.S. defense industrial base, Reuters reported. Shipbuilding push takes center stage The budget allocates more than $65 billion for ship procurement, including 18 warships and 16 support vessels to be built by companies such as General Dynamics ( GD ) and Huntington Ingalls Industries ( HII ). Officials described the effort, branded the “Golden Fleet” initiative, as the largest shipbuilding request since 1962. Aircraft procurement climbs The proposal would increase purchases of Lockheed Martin’s ( LMT ) F-35 fighter to 85 aircraft annually. It also sets aside $102 billion for aircraft procurement, research and development, representing a 26% increase from the prior year. Next-generation aviation systems remain a priority, including Boeing’s ( BA ) F-47 fighter program. The budget also seeks $6.1 billion for Northrop Grumman’s ( NOC ) B-21 bomber. Record spending on drone warfare Senior officials described the request as the largest U.S. investment to date in drone warfare and counter-drone systems. The plan includes $53.6 billion for autonomous platforms and battlefield logistics, along with $21 billion for munitions, anti-drone defenses and other advanced systems. Funding for the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group would surge to roughly $54 billion ...

Dr Craig Reeves responds to a letter that said pensioners aren’t better off under Keir Starmer’s government James Kyle writes “with a heavy heart” against Labour’s treatment of pensioners, seeing the personal allowance threshold freeze as a betrayal that shows the Tories are more on the side of “those who have worked hard all their lives” ( Letters, 12 April ). I’m no fan of Keir Starmer, but the suggestion that this is an anti-pensioner move is beyond credulity. Today’s pensioners benefited from numerous public goods that they also statistically voted against : publicly owned infrastructure; publicly funded university education; council housing and affordable private rents and house prices; robust workers’ rights; free movement across Europe. The iPhone maker on Monday announced that CEO Tim Cook will step down as chief executive in September and named senior vice president of hardware engineering John Ternus as his successor. Cook will serve as executive chairman. He has the "mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor," Cook wrote in a press release announcing Ternus as CEO. Industry experts have long speculated that the 51-year-old Ternus Apple veteran would become Cook's eventual successor. Over the last 25 years, Ternus has become a key architect of the tech giant's robust product pipeline, managing hardware engineering for iPad, AirPods, and recent iPhone models. When Ternus takes the reins this September, he'll become the company's eighth CEO. He also faces a significant obstacle : revamping the company's struggling artificial intelligence strategy. Apple is facing pressure to innovate on an AI strategy long viewed as lagging megacap peers. Recently, the company has hit development snags with its AI-charged Siri model and enlisted the help of Google's Gemini in January. Wall Street analysts view the CEO promotion as a potential catalyst for reigniting optimism in Apple and its AI strategy. Morgan Stanley analysts wrote that "promoting him to CEO clearly shows Apple's emphasis on product at the center of the flywheel will remain."
