Welcome to Going Private , I’m Sinead Cruise and this is Bloomberg’s twice-weekly newsletter about private markets and the forces moving capital away from the public eye. Today, we look at efforts by Asian private capital managers to dodge investor strife and why one of Europe’s most powerful pension fund managers remains optimistic about the sector. But first, we explore the high-octane venture capital push at celebrity-backed wealth manager Iconiq . If you’re not already on our list, sign up here . Have feedback? Email us at goingprivate@bloomberg.net Venture adventure Iconiq, the secretive wealth manager that serves Hollywood A-listers and billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella, is striding deeper into venture capital with big bets on AI pacesetters including Anthropic . Iconiq is steering more wealth from the world’s super-rich into trailblazing tech, my colleague Natasha Mascarenhas reports, putting more than $3 billion into AI startups in 2025 in a spree that chimes with some of Silicon Valley’s best-known VC firms. The San Francisco-based firm co-founded by Divesh Makan is now looking to grow its $26 billion VC pot with a new multi-billion dollar fundraise at a time when early-stage tech investment demands mettle as well as money. The firm’s first four funds, all launched before 2020, ranked among the top 25% of their peer groups at end-2025 based on the most recently available Cambridge Associates benchmarks. Iconiq has repeatedly declined to comment on its client list but people familiar with the matter say its celebrity connections include Tom Cruise and Pharrell Williams . With around $100 billion in assets under management, Iconiq raised $5.75 billion for its last VC fund, and has so far invested about $4 billion in Anthropic. In February, Anthropic announced a new funding round that effectively doubled its valuation to $380 billion — but the risks of investing so much in one firm are tough to ignore. The Pentagon has described Anthropic a s...

Getty Images The following segment was excerpted from the Third Avenue Value Fund Q1 2026 Shareholder Letter . Harley-Davidson ( HOG ) manufactures motorcycles and accessories, sells financial services and earns brand licensing revenue. While its brand remains iconic, its core motorcycle market in the U.S., and the heavyweight bikes in which Harley-Davidson specializes, have suffered several years of sales declines. Some recent declines are attributable to the aftermath of the demand pull-forward that occurred during COVID, though demand for new heavyweight bikes has been stagnant-to-declining for years. For Harley-Davidson specifically, the last several years have also been marked by multiple activist campaigns, board turnover, management changes and a string of strategic missteps. One central strategic misstep, which represented a priority for previous management, included a virtual exit from lower priced entry-level bikes in favor of more expensive and higher profit margin bikes. While conceptually appealing, that strategy ignored the need to attract new entry-level customers and that entry-level bike purchases also lead to incremental demand for high margin customizations, branded accessories and financial service contract originations. Possibly most important, however, was a lack of recognition that stuffing dealerships with far more big expensive bikes than are in demand is bad for dealer economics, creates dealer frustration and discontent and ultimately results in significant price discounting to clear stale excess inventory. Our sense is that elements of the strategy changes being implemented by new management create the opportunity for far better operating performance from the core motorcycle business and it is evident that significant progress has already been made in clearing older inventory from dealership floors. It is also notable that, despite manufacturing 100% of its bikes destined for the U.S. market in its Wisconsin and Pennsylvania plants, tarif...

Worawith Ounpeng/iStock via Getty Images The climbing limo method of forecasting future GDP in the United States projects the nation's economic output in the recently finished first quarter of 2026 will be around $31.5 trillion. This estimate assumes the momentum the U.S. economy recorded in growing between 2024-Q4 and 2025-Q2 will be sustained through the recently ended quarter of 2026-Q1. Since the U.S. economy's momentum has come in stronger than expected over the intervening quarters since our last snapshot , it's likely 2026-Q1's will come in above that value, which is not adjusted for inflation. These projections have been delayed because the Senate Democrats' government shutdown disrupted U.S. economic data reporting. It took until earlier this month to get finalized GDP data for both 2025-Q3 and Q4, which means we can now generate the climbing limo method's momentum-based projections for both 2026-Q2 and 2026-Q3. The following chart visually presents those projections while showing how actual non-inflation-adjusted GDP tracked with the model's previous projections: For the now current quarter of 2026-Q2, the climbing limo GDP forecasting method projects GDP will potentially rise to almost $32.8 trillion. Since that projection was generated with finalized GDP figures for 2025-Q1 and 2025-Q3, long before any impact from the Iran war would be felt, it will be interesting to see how well that forecast tracks with 2026-Q2's actual GDP. That's because the climbing limo forecasting method is a momentum-based projection. As such, even when recorded GDP deviates considerably from the forecast values that are projected three quarters ahead in time, it provides valuable information in confirming the economy's underlying momentum has changed. We should get a good reading on how big the Iran war's impact has been on the U.S. economy after the actual GDP data for 2026-Q2 is reported. Meanwhile, the most distant future projection we can make with available finalized GDP da...

SlavkoSereda/iStock via Getty Images Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said Wednesday it has attacked three container ships in the Strait of Hormuz and seized two of them, with the third ship "disabled off Iran's coast." Front-month Nymex crude ( CL1:COM ) for May delivery up 0.6% at $90.23/bbl, and front-month Brent crude ( CO1:COM ) for June delivery up 0.7% at $99.25/bbl. "The ships were allegedly operating without proper authorization, repeatedly violating regulations, and manipulating navigation systems, thereby endangering maritime safety while attempting to exit the Strait of Hormuz covertly," the IRGC said in a statement on Iran’s state-run television. The seizures have not been independently verified, but the U.K. Maritime Traffic Organization said earlier that two container ships had been fired on. The action comes after U.S. forces seized an Iranian ship and boarded a tanker linked to Iran's oil trade. President Trump said last night that he was extending the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely so its leaders can "come up with a unified proposal," but that the U.S. naval blockade of Iran's ports will continue. Part lesson, part lark, these 15-minute episodes are a total joy. They have such a deliriously light touch they will make you want to run outside and plunge your hands into the soil This might sound like heresy to some, but I can comfortably assert that the reason I am not a skilled horticulturist is Gardeners’ World. When I was growing up, Gardeners’ World – appointment television as mandated by my father – felt like the longest, dullest 30 minutes of the week. When the theme tune came on, I could feel my life force draining away. How different things could have been if This is a Gardening Show had been around back then. Hosted by Zach Galifianakis, there are moments when This Is a Gardening Show feels like the perfect programme. Part lesson, part lark and part warning, the series’six 15-minute episodes have such a deliriously light touch that it makes you want to run outside and plunge your hands into the soil.
