Every weekday, the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer releases the Homestretch — an actionable afternoon update, just in time for the last hour of trading on Wall Street. Stocks were making a comeback in late-afternoon trading on Wednesday following a couple of sessions of declines. Uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz and a peace deal with Iran remains, but the market is taking comfort in President Donald Trump extending the U.S. ceasefire. It's worth mentioning that the S & P 500 and Nasdaq were rallying nearly 1% and 1.3%, respectively, despite climbing oil prices. American oil benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude was climbing nearly 4% back to the low-$90s per barrel. With a ceasefire still in place, the market is shifting its focus from the war to earnings and the AI infrastructure capital expenditures cycle, which was driving continued gains in stocks tied to the data center buildout. Alphabet announced the eighth generation of its custom tensor processor units (TPUs) on Wednesday at its Google Cloud Next conference. It's actually two new chips: the TPU 8t for training and the TPU 8i for inference, or the running of AI models on a daily basis. Together, the company believes they will "deliver scale, efficiency and capabilities across training, serving and agentic workloads." According to Alphabet's blog post, the TPU 8t delivers nearly three times the compute performance per pod over the previous generation, making it a "training powerhouse." The TPU 8i shines in the most latency-sensitive inference workloads because of its memory bandwidth design. Keep in mind that Broadcom collaborates with Google on these TPUs. Both Alphabet and Broadcom are Club names. Google's success in developing its own hardware and chips is a key advantage over its AI peers. It enabled Google to more efficiently scale compute while maintaining cost control and capex efficiency. Amazon has a big custom chip business too, and a note published by Morgan Stanley late Tuesday highli...

With bonds not doing their job as portfolio ballasts, investors need to "diversify their diversifiers," according to BlackRock's Gargi Chaudhuri. The correlation between stocks and bonds , which hasn't been reliable in recent years, weakened meaningfully at the start of the Iran war, BlackRock said in its spring outlook Wednesday. The 20-day rolling stock-bond correlation rose to 0.72 in late March — its highest level since May 2024, the firm said. That means investors need "a whole host of diversifiers," said Chaudhuri, BlackRock chief investment and portfolio strategist, Americas. "The same things that may have worked in different periods, different volatility shocks may not work this time around," she said. "Obviously gold worked for the quarter, but did not work for the month of March. It has worked very well since then." Gold, traditionally seen as a safe haven, fell more than 10% in March. It was its worst month since 2013. IAU YTD mountain iShares Gold Trust ETF year to date These days, BlackRock is telling clients to add liquid alternatives to their portfolios. Liquid alternatives are mutual or exchange-traded funds that employ strategies similar to that of hedge funds, but they have daily liquidity and lower investment minimums. The idea is to find a way to make some money, even if the S & P 500 is falling, Chaudhuri explained. "The portfolio manager for the strategies have the ability to look at, 'OK, here the number of stocks that are going to more likely go up, sectors that are likely to go down. Let me play the things that are going to do well versus the things that are not going to do as well," she said. "Their job is to really give you positive returns … without taking a huge amount of directional view," she added. "So you're not always going in the same direction of the S & P 500." BlackRock's liquid alternative ETF is the iShares Systematic Alternatives Active ETF (IALT), which was launched in December. It has 95% of its assets in cash and/or deriva...

Modern artificial intelligence chips, such as those made by Nvidia, are not single chips but several chips glued together with advanced packaging technologies, a step that has become a supply bottleneck for Nvidia and others. In a January earnings call, TSMC said it was applying for permits to begin construction of its first advanced packaging plant in an existing Arizona facility, but did not give a timeline for when it will come online.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co on Wednesday showed its newest generation of chip manufacturing technology, saying it expects to be able to create smaller, faster chips without requiring expensive new machines from ASML. TSMC, the global giant that makes chips for Nvidia, Apple and Google, among many others, showed two improvements of chipmaking technology: One called A13, which will go into production in 2029 and likely be used for artificial intelligence chips, and one called N2U, a more affordable option that can be used to make chips for phones and laptops, as well as AI chips. For all of the technologies TSMC showed on Wednesday, it is planning to squeeze more gains out of its existing extreme-ultraviolet lithography (EUV) machines from Dutch supplier ASML, rather than move to a newer generation of "high NA" EUV machines, which, at $400 million each, are roughly double the cost of the older machines.

The company is expected go public in June at a valuation between $1.75 trillion and $2 trillion. Its first round of public share sales is projected to raise roughly $75 billion. Based on recent news, the company could wind up turning around and using most of the proceeds from its IPO to purchase an artificial intelligence ( AI ) coding specialist. SpaceX said recently that it had signed an agreement that would allow it to acquire Cursor for $60 billion. Alternatively, the deal also leaves the door open for SpaceX to instead pay the AI coding specialist $10 billion for their work together. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. will hold off on deploying ASML Holding NV ’s most cutting-edge lithography machines for chip production through 2029 to save money, dealing a potential setback to the Dutch maker of the costly equipment. The Taiwanese chipmaker has no current plans to adopt ASML’s latest high numerical aperture extreme ultraviolet lithography machines , or high-NA EUV, which fetch upwards of €350 million ($410 million) apiece, TSMC Deputy Co-Chief Operating Officer Kevin Zhang told reporters. Zhang also announced that the company’s leading-edge A13 chip will go into production in 2029. TSMC is ASML’s largest customer, according to Bloomberg’s supply chain data . “We continue to be able to harvest the benefit from current EUV,” Zhang said, adding that the next-generation high-NA EUV machines are “very, very expensive.” Its decision may not bode well for ASML. Investors are watching for adoption of high-NA EUV machines, and ASML expects the gear to enter high-volume production in 2027 and 2028 as it targets revenue of as much as €60 billion in 2030. ASML’s US-traded shares fell as much as 5.5% in intraday trading. The stock had gained 36% this year in New York through Tuesday. TSMC’s technology choices also have a wide-ranging impact on the semiconductor industry. It is the largest buyer of equipment, with the biggest budget for new plants and gear. The company is also a leader in manufacturing techniques often emulated by rivals. ASML’s high-NA EUV machines are an enhancement to the optical systems that help chipmakers shrink their transistors further and make more advanced semiconductors for AI applications. TSMC has acquired a very small number of the machines, but has only used them for research rather than mass production. Zhang said the company is exploring ways to make its chips more powerful without the use of high-NA EUV equipment. The costs of modern chipmaking are becoming increasingly prohibitive, and the world’s top semiconductor ma...
