magnez2/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images U.S. credit card delinquencies and charge-offs dropped month-over-month across major banks in the prior month, according to Seeking Alpha's March Credit Pulse. Seeking Alpha tracks delinquency and charge-off numbers for seven banks in its monthly roundup: American Express ( AXP ), Synchrony Financial ( SYF ), Citigroup ( C ), Bread Financial ( BFH ), Capital One ( COF ), JPMorgan Chase ( JPM ), and Bank of America ( BAC ). Average delinquency rate dropped to 2.70% from 2.81% in February. Furthermore, the metric was below the March 2025 average of 2.84%. Notably, the March delinquency rate came below the pre-pandemic level of 2.76% (March 2019) and the three-month average of 2.77%. Average net charge-off rate for March came in at 3.38%, down from 3.83% in February and 4.34% in March 2025. The pre-pandemic rate was 4.05%, while the three-month average was 3.58%. Households are pulling back on borrowing and reducing revolving balances, leading to improvements in consumer credit conditions, showed the latest CreditGauge edition from VantageScore. Average credit card balances and utilization rates declined month-over-month in March, according to the credit scoring company. "The decline in revolving balances provides clearer evidence of consumer deleveraging, suggesting households are paying down debt and moderating spending, supported in part by seasonal inflows such as tax refunds," said the report. Scramble For AI Compute: Meta Inks Multibillion-Dollar Deal With Amazon For CPU Chips Meta Platforms inked a multibillion-dollar agreement with Amazon to deploy tens of millions of AWS Graviton processor cores in support of its next-generation AI buildout. The deal makes Meta one of the largest Graviton customers globally and shows CEO Mark Zuckerberg's willingness to spend aggressively on compute infrastructure as the AI arms race intensifies with Alphabet, Microsoft, and other tech giants. The news that the social media giant would deploy hundreds of thousands of Amazon's general-purpose chips to "support the company's AI efforts" was first reported by Amazon News . "The chips will power various workloads at Meta, including supporting the company's AI efforts. That work requires infrastructure that can handle billions of interactions while coordinating complex, multi-step agent workflows—exactly the kind of CPU-intensive work Graviton is designed for," the release stated. The deal also expands Meta's long-running AWS partnership and builds on its large-scale use of Amazon Bedrock. While GPUs remain essential for training large AI models, Amazon noted in the release that the "rise of agentic AI is creating massive demand for CPU-intensive workloads." The press release did not reveal the value of the Meta-Amazon deal on expanding compute. But in recent weeks, Zuckerberg has signed deals totaling $48 billion with CoreWeave and Nebius, both of which rent out access to Nvidia GPUs that run AI models. To expand computing capacity, Meta has announced a workforce restructuring, with its latest plan calling for layoffs of around 8,000 employees, or about 10% of its workforce. Microsoft has done the same ( read report ). "Meta has, as you can imagine, access to so many options from the supply side. But they chose Graviton5, our 3-nanometer chip, for price performance," Nafea Bshara, an Amazon vice president and distinguished engineer, said, who was quoted by The Wall Street...

Nicolae Popescu/iStock via Getty Images On April 7th, BNP Paribas equity analyst Nick Jones published a note on Alphabet Inc. aka Google ( GOOG/GOOL) arguing that investor worries about the company’s elevated AI CapEx spending are overdone. This note piqued our interest because in our internal note, we have previously flagged multiple sell-side analysts’ probes during Alphabet’s Q4 2025 Q&A on potential overspending. It also caught our attention because on the publish date of this note, Google was trading at roughly $300 per share after a 97% YoY retur n. At that valuation, we didn’t think investors were particularly concerned about Alphabet potentially overspending. In this article, we will discuss two recent case studies of overspending that we have covered: Meta Platforms ( META ) in 2022 and Intel ( INTC ) in 2023. Both companies destroyed hundreds of billions of dollars in investor capital. We draw lessons from these examples, highlight the clear parallels to Google today, and outline the key metrics we will use to monitor Alphabet's earnings on April 29th, 2026. BNP Paribas’ Note on Google On April 7th, 2026, equity analyst Nick Jones released a note covering both Alphabet and Amazon ( AMZN ). He argued that investor worries about their elevated AI/CapEx spending are overdone. His key arguments made on Alphabet: Backlog-to-capex ratio is the right metric, not just spending total. Contracted demand for Google’s cloud/AI infrastructure has grown and aligns with CapEx levels. This suggests Alphabet is not overspending but investing appropriately to fulfil existing demand and avoid capacity shortages. Improving efficiency via revenue per employee: Alphabet is becoming more efficient as revenue per employee rises, countering fears of wasteful AI investments. Custom AI chips provide a structural advantage: Alphabet has a multi-year lead with its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), developed over a decade and deeply integrated with its hardware and software ecosystem. Jeremy Edwards The U.S. Department of Justice has closed its criminal investigation into Jerome Powell , handing oversight of the matter to an internal watchdog at the Federal Reserve . In a statement posted on X, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the Inspector General for the Federal Reserve has been asked to examine “billions of dollars” in cost overruns tied to building projects borne by taxpayers. She added that her office would close its probe while the IG conducts a “comprehensive” inquiry. The decision follows mounting political pressure. During a Senate hearing earlier this week, Thom Tillis said the Justice Department should abandon the case, arguing cost overruns are common across government. “If we put everybody in prison in the federal government that had had a budget go over, we’d have to reserve an area roughly the size of Texas for a penal colony,” he said. “We have got to end this investigation.” While the DOJ probe was active, Tillis had also been blocking a confirmation vote on former Fed governor Kevin Warsh , Donald Trump ’s nominee for Federal Reserve chair, tying the nomination process to the outcome of the investigation. The move signals a de-escalation of legal pressure on Powell, who had faced scrutiny over the central bank’s spending controls. Pirro emphasized that the IG has the authority to hold the Fed accountable and expressed confidence that the review would address outstanding concerns that prompted subpoenas. Still, she left the door open for renewed legal action, warning that a criminal investigation could be restarted “should the facts warrant doing so.” The news comes after President Donald Trump, who has been urged by Republicans to drop U.S. prosecutors' investigation into Powell, indicated he may be open to an alternate probe, according to a media report on Friday. The investigation centers on major cost overruns at the Fed's multibillion-dollar renovation and whether Powell lied to Congress about the project. Several Republican...
