Actor and writer who confronted his motor neurone disease diagnosis in his work, and went on to play Richard III When Michael Patrick became the first actor in Ireland’s theatrical history to portray Richard III as a wheelchair user, he was determined that neither his nor his character’s disability be seen as part of the play’s inherent tragedy. Instead, as he explained in an interview with the Guardian at the time, he used his still recent diagnosis of motor neurone disease to inform a new understanding of one of the greatest plays in the canon. “It’s less about the disability being the tragedy, and it’s more about people’s reaction to the disability being a tragedy, if that makes sense. Because, you know, in an ideal world, Richard could be in a wheelchair and he could still do all the things he wants to do,” he told me ahead of opening night. Continue reading...

Sundry Photography/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Spruce Point Management suggests the digital communication platform Zoom ( ZM ) should place itself on the auction block if it fails to drive up meaningful shareholder value within the next year. However, the firm believes the company has upside potential, and several remedies can be applied before taking such a drastic measure. "After conducting a forensic review of Zoom Communications, Inc., we see material upside potential in the Company's shares," Spruce Point said. "Zoom is the leader in video communications and was a COVID-19 pandemic darling. However, a growth slowdown, persistent skepticism regarding its market opportunity and competitive position, and the current SaaS-pocalypse have, we believe unfairly, driven Zoom's valuation to egregiously low levels, particularly considering the Company’s estimated $1.2 billion stake in AI leader Anthropic ( ANTHRO )." To be fair, Zoom shares have not suffered the same fate as most of the software sector has recently. It is up 6% year to date, while the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF ( IGV ) has declined 20% over that time frame. To accelerate shareholder value further, Spruce Point suggested several recommendations for the company. These include improving capital allocation, reallocating and reducing operating expenses, restructuring and refocusing the international business, and improving marketing. Additional remedies recommended are avoiding M&A mistakes, consolidating insider selling, collapsing its dual-class share structure, and lobbying for inclusion in the S&P 500 ( SP500 ). If all these fail, Spruce Point said the company should put itself up for sale. "We believe Zoom should pursue a sale transaction if management cannot drive shareholder value creation within a year," Spruce Point added. "We view Zoom as a highly attractive acquisition target and believe there is a broad universe of potential strategic buyers with massive financial wherewithal. ...
