Nathan Posner | Anadolu | Getty Images Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Friday defended the possibility of the U.S. participating in currency swaps with allies in the Persian Gulf and Asia who are seeking financial backstops due to the Iran war . Discussions with those countries about U.S. dollar swap lines "are part of ongoing, routine conversations that @USTreasury has been having with our partners over a number of years," Bessent said in an X post. "They are a testament to the U.S. dollar's primacy and the strength of America's economic shield," he said of the potential swaps. The assertion of swap lines' benefits and commonness comes as the Trump administration considers offering the financial lifeline to the United Arab Emirates , CNBC reported Tuesday. It also comes two days after Bessent said that "many" allies in the Persian Gulf are seeking the same backstop as the ongoing war wreaks havoc on the oil-rich nations' economies. watch now VIDEO 2:05 02:05 Bessent: Many of our Gulf and Asian allies have requested currency swap lines in addition to UAE Money Movers Swap lines involve two countries' central banks agreeing to exchange equivalent amounts of each other's currency, while agreeing to swap back those quantities at a specified future date. The U.S. maintains "standing U.S. dollar liquidity swap line arrangements" with the central banks of Canada, England, Japan and Switzerland, as well as the European Central Bank, to "enhance the provision of U.S. dollar liquidity," according to the Federal Reserve . Shares of the Rockville, Maryland-based company backed by Amazon.com Inc. opened at $30.11 each on Friday, versus an IPO price of $23. The listing priced above the marketed $16 to $19 range. The trading gives X-Energy a market value of nearly $12 billion based on the outstanding shares listed in its filings. The IPO ended more than 15 times oversubscribed, people familiar with the matter have said . “This is a validation of our nuclear technology,” X-Energy Chief Executive Officer Clay Sell said in an interview. “It’s a validation of the role that the market, and investors, believe nuclear energy must play.” X-Energy designs small modular nuclear reactors and makes advanced nuclear fuel. Its reactors use so-called Triso pebbles, or tristructural isotropic, poppyseed-sized uranium kernels that burn hotter and longer than conventional fuel. “We want to make nuclear boring,” Sell said. “We can build this over and over and over again. That’s the way you get costs down.” The offering comes as firms have been racing to bring the first US small modular reactor to market. X-Energy aims to make its first delivery by the early 2030s. The firm plans to use its reactors to power industrial facilities and artificial intelligence data centers and has agreements in place with Dow Inc. , Amazon and Centrica Plc . Ark Investment Management was interested in buying as much as $105 million worth of shares in the offering at the IPO price, according to the filings. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent talked up the idea of extending currency swap lines to more countries as a way to strengthen “dollar dominance” in a social media post Friday as speculation continues over why rich countries such as the United Arab Emirates would be interested in the arrangement. “Additional swap lines can benefit our nation by reinforcing dollar usage and liquidity internationally,” Bessent said in a post on X. “Dollar dominance and reserve currency status are strengthened by constant long-term initiatives, including countering the growth of problematic, alternative payment systems.” Bessent described discussions with the UAE and other Gulf and Asian nations on dollar swap lines as being “part of ongoing, routine conversations” the US Treasury has engaged in over a period of a number of years. After President Donald Trump confirmed that a swap line with the UAE was under consideration earlier this week, the UAE’s ambassador to Washington stated that his nation isn’t in need of external financing. On a similar note, Bessent said Friday that “many of these countries have pristine sovereign balance sheets and large dollar holdings.” The Treasury secretary on Wednesday told a congressional panel that “numerous” nations had asked the US about establishing swap lines. Bessent used the ESF to set up a $20 billion swap line with the central bank of Argentina in October. Bessent said Friday that “I applaud our allies’ foresight and watchful risk management by exploring additional financial buffers during periods of market quiescence.” “Extending permanent swap lines can be a major first step in creating new US dollar funding centers in the Gulf and Asia,” he said, echoing r...

Developments in Berlin and Tokyo show how far the strategic environment has shifted in response to authoritarian threat and American unpredictability When Donald Trump hosted Sanae Takaichi, the Japanese prime minister, last month, he could not resist a gratuitous reference to Pearl Harbor . The US president is impelled to trash longstanding alliances. He has done more than anyone to demolish the postwar global order. This week alone, the Polish president, Donald Tusk, questioned whether the US would be “loyal” to Nato if Russia attacked. A Pentagon memo reportedly floated suspending Spain from Nato and reviewing support for the British claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. And a report said US officials believe that it has depleted munitions so rapidly in Iran as to put in question contingency plans to defend Taiwan against a Chinese invasion in the near future. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images News The U.S. Department of Justice has intervened in a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk's xAI ( X.AI ) challenging the legality of the Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act, which is slated to go into effect on June 30. The statute, Colorado SB24-205, which is formally known as the Consumer Protections for Artificial Intelligence, violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964, according to xAI, and the DOJ agrees. "Laws that require AI companies to infect their products with woke DEI ideology are illegal," said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. "The Justice Department will not stand on the sidelines while states such as Colorado coerce our nation's technological innovators into producing harmful products that advance a radical, far left worldview at odds with the Constitution." "Laws like Colorado's that force AI models to produce false results or promote ideological bias threaten national and economic security and must be stopped," added Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate of the Justice Department's Civil Division. The Colorado AI Act was signed by Colo. Gov. Jared Polis back in May 2024, but its implementation was delayed until this summer. It attempts to prevent consumers from "algorithmic discrimination" by businesses or organizations using AI models. It covers AI systems used by these entities to make decisions regarding areas such as employment, housing, healthcare, insurance, and education. The Colorado attorney general can charge companies up to $20,000 per violation. "The act requires a developer of a high-risk artificial intelligence system to use reasonable care to protect consumers from any known or reasonably foreseeable risks of algorithmic discrimination in the high-risk system," according to the bill. Algorithmic discrimination is defined as "any condition in which the use of an artificial intelligence system results in an unlawful differential treatment or impact ...

Architect-designed loos such as the ones in Tokyo are fantastic. But even ordinary facilities enhance cities and towns Five years on from the delayed Tokyo Olympics, one of its less obvious legacies is probably the highest-spec public toilets in the world . Seventeen architects turned conveniences across the city into what one, Kengo Kuma, called “must-see attractions” – including a design with clear-glass cubicles that become opaque when occupied. The German film director Wim Wenders took note. In 2023 they featured in his film, Perfect Days , about a cleaner. A public realm in which humans and their needs are treated with so much dignity deserves to be celebrated. But new loos do not have to be architectural icons. The main thing is that there should be enough of them, and that they are maintained. Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article?
