Elon Musk and Sam Altman will face off this week in a trial that could determine the future of OpenAI . The high-profile showdown between the artificial intelligence titans is the culmination of years of animosity and public feuding over the startup that the pair founded together more than a decade ago, before their relationship soured and they became rivals. Musk alleges Altman and other leaders at OpenAI enriched themselves by abandoning its altruistic principles and converting to a for-profit company with billions of dollars in support from Microsoft Corp. OpenAI and Altman have accused Musk of harassment and say the real goal of the lawsuit is to undercut competition with his own startup that he co-founded in 2023, xAI . The world’s richest person is seeking as much as $134 billion in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft — a stratospheric amount for a court case — all of which he pledged just this month to give to OpenAI’s charitable arm and not to himself or any of his companies. Musk also is asking the court to remove Altman and OpenAI President Greg Brockman from their leadership positions. But the biggest threat to OpenAI is that Musk is seeking to restore the startup’s status as a full nonprofit research organization by unwinding the for-profit restructuring that was completed in October. Altman pitched the conversion as critical to securing the vast amount of funding OpenAI needs to fulfill its mission of creating artificial general intelligence — or AGI — that will benefit humanity. Critical Moment Such a shakeup to OpenAI’s C-suite or core structure could destabilize the company during a critical moment as it’s eyeing a much-anticipated public offering that could be one of the largest in history; the startup was last valued at $852 billion in March. The brief, failed ouster of Altman in 2023 almost collapsed the ChatGPT maker, with investors pressing the board to bring back Altman and employees pledging to quit en masse if the CEO wasn’t reinstated. Spencer Grant | Universal Images Group | Getty Images Intellia Therapeutics said its Crispr-based treatment for a rare swelling condition met its goals in a late-stage trial, marking a milestone for the field of gene editing and putting the company on track to seek approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The company's treatment uses Nobel Prize-winning technology Crispr to edit DNA and turn off the gene that controls production of a peptide that's overactive in people with hereditary angioedema, causing them to experience potentially life-threatening swelling attacks. Intellia's treatment is administered once through an hourslong infusion, making the edits directly in the liver. Intellia said the one-time treatment reduced attacks by 87% compared with a placebo, meeting the study's main goal. Six months after treatment, 62% of patients were free from attacks and weren't using other therapies, Intellia said. The company described the safety and tolerability of the treatment as "favorable," reporting the most common side effects were infusion-related reactions, headaches and fatigue. Analysts were closely watching safety in the trial since a patient in a separate trial of a different treatment from Intellia died from liver toxicity. "When you think about where we started with Crispr, just 12 years ago with some of the fundamental insights, I think there was a lot of talk about what might be possible, and we've had reports along the way in terms of milestones, but this is the first Phase 3 data in any indication with in vivo Crispr where you're actually changing a gene that causes disease," said Intellia CEO John Leonard. The only FDA-approved Crispr-based medicine comes from Vertex Pharmaceuticals. Called Casgevy , the gene editing is done outside the body, or ex vivo. The process requires collectin...

Verizon Communications Inc. surprised analysts Monday when it reported a gain of mobile subscribers that overturned Wall Street expectations for losses. The largest US wireless carrier recorded 55,000 net new mobile phone customers, the first positive phone subscriber additions in a first quarter since 2013 and a year-over-year improvement of 340,000. Analysts had projected 89,169 customer losses. The company raised its forecast for full-year adjusted earnings to $4.95 to $4.99 per share. New phone subscribers will come in at the high end of a 750,000 to 1 million previously forecast range, Verizon said in a statement Monday. The shares jumped as much as 5% Monday in premarket trading in New York. They have gained 14% this year compared with a 5.5% gain at AT&T Inc. and a 6.5% loss at T-Mobile US Inc. The results comes six months into the term of Chief Executive Officer Dan Schulman , a former PayPal CEO who was given the top job last year to help stem the wireless giant’s customer losses. He recently said Verizon can’t coast on claims that it has the best network anymore. Its new strategy is focused on improving the overall customer experience. The company has also turned customers’ heads with cheeky marketing , evidenced in a four-and-a-half minute ad starring Heated Rivalry heartthrob Connor Storrie that went viral on social media last month. Adjusted earnings for the quarter were $1.28 per share, compared with projections of $1.21, the highest quarterly growth since 2021, Verizon said. Its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, a key measure of financial health, was $13.4 billion, the highest in the company’s history. Verizon reported operating revenue of $34.4 billion, slightly below projections for $34.8 billion. Rivals AT&T and T-Mobile have increasingly been offering perks and incentives to woo customers to switch providers, including AT&T’s newly announced OneConnect all-in pricing “subscription.” Verizon’s current promotio...

Those sketches traditionally see endless iteration and refinement from all angles before being turned into 3D models by hand, some dying in the digital world, others sculpted into clay to better visualize lines and profiles. That's just the beginning of a design and development process that often takes a half-decade or more.
