South Korean battery maker Samsung SDI Co. reported a smaller-than-expected first-quarter loss, helping its shares extend a blistering rally, as demand for energy storage systems and electric cars in Europe helped cushion the impact of dwindling EV support in the US. The company’s operating loss narrowed 61% to 155.6 billion won ($106 million) in the three months ended March 31, it said Tuesday. That was significantly smaller than analyst estimates of a 270.7 billion won shortfall. The shares jumped as much as 7% in early Seoul trading, taking this year’s gain to 146%. The rally has been fueled by a pivot to energy storage systems for AI data centers and a recent deal to supply Mercedes-Benz Group AG with high-nickel nickel-cobalt-manganese batteries for the German automaker’s next-generation compact and midsize electric SUVs and coupes. Revenue rose 12.6% from a year earlier to 3.6 trillion won and net profit swung to the black, chiefly driven by higher sales of energy storage systems and high-margin cylindrical cells, SDI Samsung said. It also benefited from 80.5 billion won in US tax credits for advanced manufacturing related to its ESS production, while resilient demand for semiconductors also helped boost its electronic materials business.

Choosing a third-party location for high-stakes conflict resolution and trust-building is rarely a matter of mere convenience. Historically, the selection of these diplomatic theaters falls into four distinct patterns.
