More than eight months prior to the school shooting, trained experts had flagged a ChatGPT account later linked to the shooter as posing a credible threat of gun violence in the real world. In those cases, OpenAI is expected to notify police—which, in this case, already had a file on the shooter and had proactively removed guns from their home previously—but that's not what happened. Apparently, OpenAI decided that the user's privacy and the potential stress of an encounter with cops outweighed the risks of violence, whistleblowers told The Wall Street Journa l. Leaders rejected the safety team's urgings and declined to report the user to law enforcement. Instead, OpenAI simply deactivated the account, then quickly followed up to tell the shooter how to get back on ChatGPT to continue planning by signing up with another email address, the lawsuits alleged. OpenAI would be all over the headlines this week anyway because of a high-profile legal battle between CEO Sam Altman and Tesla CEO Elon Musk . The two ex-friends were among a group of techies who created OpenAI as a nonprofit lab in 2015, and they're now facing off in court after Musk sued Altman and OpenAI in 2024, alleging they breached the founding agreement. Before opening arguments could begin on Tuesday, shares of companies including Oracle , Nvidia , Advanced Micro Devices and Broadcom were sinking from a Wall Street Journal report that OpenAI missed revenue and user growth projections. For income-oriented investors, this environment demands an uncommon combination: the scale required to finance a massive infrastructure build-out and the reliability of a multi-decade dividend streak. One such standout reached a historic milestone earlier this year; we’re referring to Black Hills ( BKH ), which upped its quarterly dividend per share by 4% to $0.703 in January. That marked the 56th consecutive year of dividend growth for the regulated utility. When Kody last covered BKH with a "Buy" rating in September , he thought the announced merger with NorthWestern Energy Group ( NWE ) was a strategically and financially sound move.
