Renewed fears about the trajectory of the U.S.-Iran war sent global benchmark Brent crude futures to a four-year high and rattled equity markets on Thursday — but analysts say investors are still pricing for peace and underestimating potential future risk. The latest step higher in oil prices came after Axios reported that U.S. Central Command is preparing to present U.S. President Donald Trump with plans for further possible military action against Iran, citing anonymous sources. The president was also reported to have rejected a peace proposal from Tehran, which would mean an American blockade of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical oil shipping route — will remain in place. By 6:06 a.m. ET, Brent futures for June delivery fell 1.7% at $116.05 a barrel, climbing down from an earlier surge that put the contracts on track for their highest close since March 2022. U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures for June delivery were down about 0.2% to trade at $106.59, also paring earlier gains. @LCO.1 @CL.1 1D line Oil futures The fresh volatility on Thursday raised questions about what comes next for the oil market and the global economy. "This move in the oil price might be the catalyst to see sentiment and longer-term positioning changing," Neil Birrell, chief investment officer at London-based Premier Miton Investors, told CNBC in an email on Thursday. He noted that while asset prices and sentiment have fluctuated alongside oil prices throughout the two-month Iran war, "it does feel like they have reflected more the likelihood of a resolution to the conflict." Backwardation to bite Since the start of the Iran war in late February, the oil market has been in a state of backwardation : a phenomenon where futures with near-term deliveries are marketed at a premium over longer-dated contracts. Even as near-term futures contracts continue to surge, backwardation remains the status quo — signaling that money markets are pricing in a looming resolution to the war and a stabilizatio...

Phiwath Jittamas/iStock via Getty Images CVR Partners Update Data by YCharts This is an update on one of my favorite stock holdings, CVR Partners ( UAN ), which I previously called a BUY at around $117 in early March. In that coverage, I argued that the war in Iran had completely reset the investment case for U.S.-based nitrogen producers, including CVR Partners. My base case at the time assumed a $16 annualized distribution and a near-term price target of $150. The Q1 results this week provide the first real data point against that call, and I'm happy to report that the partnership delivered. According to its Q1 results press release , CVR Partners saw its net income nearly double to $50 million ($4.72 per unit), up from $27 million ($2.56 per unit) in Q1 2025. The higher earnings and cash flow mean that the variable distribution rose substantially, with the board declaring a $4.00 per unit payout, payable on May 18 (to unitholders of record on May 11). The $4 Distribution Speaks For Itself The big news for investors here is that the distribution has been raised from $.37 to $4.00 per unit. That's a direct result of higher fertilizer prices and its variable distribution structure - when prices are higher and things are going well, distributions can reach very high numbers. For this quarter, that was exactly the case: Average realized gate price for ammonia came in at $687 per ton, up 24% year over year. UAN realized $343 per ton, up 34%. Pair those prices with combined ammonia utilization of 103%, and you can see why the company essentially printed cash this quarter. At a $4 per unit quarterly run rate, you get a $16 annual distribution. Using the current stock price, the forward yield easily clears 10% and is probably closer to 12-13%. No, that's not a typo - you can lock in that yield by buying units today, and this is one of the highest (if not the highest) yielding MLP. MLP Distribution Policy Approx. Forward Yield CVR Partners (UAN) Variable (nitrogen fertiliz...

sshepard A broad coalition has emerged this week to oppose Union Pacific's proposed $85B acquisition of Norfolk Southern ( NSC ). The Stop the Rail Merger Coalition includes railroads, labor unions, and industry groups, who are united in warning that the mega-merger would reduce competition, increase costs, and threaten supply chain stability. The coalition includes major railroad operators Berkshire Hathaway's ( BF.A ) ( BF.B ) BNSF Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway ( CP ), both direct competitors to the merging companies. Labor representation comes from the Teamsters Rail Conference, which represents the majority of unionized workers at both railroads, including the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division. Industry groups opposing the deal include the American Chemistry Council, American Farm Bureau Federation, Alliance for Chemical Distribution, National Industrial Transportation League, and Vinyl Institute. The coalition released polling data showing nearly 71% of Americans oppose the merger after learning about its impacts, with concerns cutting across party lines. Opponents argue the combined entity would control almost half of the nation's rail traffic, creating monopoly conditions that would harm manufacturers, farmers, and consumers. The merger is going through a long regulatory process. The Surface Transportation Board unanimously rejected the initial merger application on January 16, ruling it incomplete due to missing market share analyses and merger agreement documentation. The railroads announced plans to refile by the end of this month, with Union Pacific ( UNP ) CEO Jim Vena and Norfolk Southern ( NSC ) CEO Mark George expressing confidence despite the opposition. The companies expect regulatory approval in early 2027 if their revised application addresses the STB's concerns. Lee's killing, no longer a stand-in for random street crime, didn't fit neatly into the political zeitgeist, though. Instead, the tabloids latched onto the story for its salacious mix of drugs, violence and sex. Momeni didn't give a statement in the year and a half he was in jail awaiting trial. But when a photojournalist managed to snap a few photos of him in his cell, he smiled and appeared to pose for the camera. The New York Post published the pictures under the headline, “Bone-chilling photos show Cash App founder Bob Lee’s alleged killer Nima Momeni smiling in jail.” After a long public silence, he would finally tell his side of the story. With voter loyalty a distant memory, the Lib Dems’ cost of living policies and criticism of Trump could gain them ground It has been an election buildup dominated by the rise of Reform UK and the Greens, and the contrasting woes of Labour and the Tories. But there is a chance that on 8 May the Liberal Democrats, largely ignored in recent weeks, could wake up as the biggest party in English local government. This is just one of several paradoxes for the party’s leader, Ed Davey, and his team. They are fifth in many national polls, with a rating barely changed from 2024. But Lib Dem bosses are sanguine, convinced that UK politics is now so different, so atomised, to make headline polling almost irrelevant. Continue reading...

Orla/iStock via Getty Images Shareholder meeting season is in full swing. The headliner is undoubtedly Berkshire Hathaway’s ( BRK.A ) ( BRK.B ) world-famous gathering in Omaha on Saturday, May 2. But “Woodstock for Capitalists” will be different this year. For years, Warren Buffett shaped the meeting into something closer to a macro forum layered atop a company update. His commentary, alongside the late Charlie Munger’s sharp mind and entertaining voice, kept Berkshire stockholders and the investing world glued to TV screens on the first Saturday in May. When the Oracle Goes Quiet It wasn’t just Buffett’s thoughts on valuations, earnings growth, and management teams’ strengths and weaknesses we all looked to, but also his wit and ability to connect with everyday investors, something few CEOs could match. While he’s still the chairman and largest equity owner of Berkshire, the world’s 14th-richest person is not expected to speak this Saturday. Buffett’s viewpoints would have been quite helpful in today’s economic and market backdrop. The conflict in Iran presses on, now approaching the 60-day mark. Global oil prices have climbed back above $100 per barrel (Brent). Consumer sentiment is at an all-time low. All the while, the S&P 500 (and some of Berkshire’s equity positions) is at record highs. Amid an unsettled and disparate landscape, the onus now falls on the new CEO, Greg Abel, to deliver a state-of-the-market speech of sorts. Abel’s Turn at the Mic Buffett’s shoes cannot be filled, of course, and Abel is likely to focus on business-level performance, something value investors will eat up, but the investor community may tune out somewhat quickly. Still, the Canadian businessman, who had been Berkshire’s vice chairman for non-insurance operations and was appointed to Berkshire’s board of directors well before being named Buffett’s successor in 2021 and officially assuming the CEO role on January 1 of this year, brings hands-on expertise. The Oracle still has the ...

German Chancellor Claims Relationship With Trump Is Good, Despite Comments About Iran Authored by Victoria Friedman via The Epoch Times, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on April 29 said that he is on good terms with U.S. President Donald Trump, despite Merz’s recent remarks about the Iran war and Trump’s criticism of the German chancellor. “From my perspective, my personal relationship with the U.S. President remains good,” Merz told reporters. “I simply had doubts from the start about what was begun with the war in Iran. That is why I have made that clear.” On April 27, the German chancellor said that the United States had been “humiliated” by Tehran after U.S. officials agreed to travel to Pakistan for peace talks. “The Iranians are obviously very skilled at negotiating, or rather, very skilful at not negotiating, letting the Americans travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any result,” Merz said during a talk to students in Marsberg, Germany. “ An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards. And so I hope that this ends as quickly as possible,” he added. Trump canceled the visit scheduled for April 25 by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan, citing a lack of progress in negotiations. The U.S. president also criticized Merz in a Truth Social post on April 28, saying that the German chancellor “thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon.” “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about! If Iran had a Nuclear Weapon, the whole World would be held hostage. I am doing something with Iran, right now, that other Nations, or Presidents, should have done long ago. No wonder Germany is doing so poorly, both Economically, and otherwise!” Merz has said that Iran must not have a nuclear weapon. Germany’s Economic Concerns The German chancellor also on April 29 articulated his worries over the economic impact of the Iran war. “In Germany and Europe we are suffering from the c...
