Welcome to the Brussels Edition. I’m John Ainger, Bloomberg climate and energy reporter, bringing you the latest from the EU. Make sure you’re signed up . The crisis in the Middle East is set to be a major economic shock for the world economy. But in Europe, not all countries are bearing the brunt just yet. Spain, once again, is the shining light in the EU . Its economy surged 0.6% in the first quarter, topping analyst forecasts thanks to domestic demand and trade. Italy also outperformed expectations. At the other end of the spectrum was France, which recorded a surprise stagnation, while inflation in the country quickened to 2.5% — the highest level since mid-2024 — raising a concerning stagflationary specter. The outlook is also a worrying one for Germany, Europe’s economic powerhouse. Its economy grew by 0.3% in the first quarter, but the country has halved its forecast for 2026 to 0.5%. That poses problems for Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had promised that the country would see a “year of growth” after a lengthy malaise accentuated by the halt to Russian gas supplies following the invasion of Ukraine. To be sure, the latest data only captures the first month of fighting in the Middle East. It doesn’t reflect the full extent of the slowdown taking hold in Europe as soaring energy costs ripple through the economy, curbing activity and driving inflation up by the most since 2022. Adding to the headwinds, separate figures showed unemployment stuck at 6.4% — its highest level in almost six years The ECB kept interest rates on hold at 2% at its meeting Thursday . It’s still calibrating its response to the economic consequences of the conflict, though markets reckon it will hike in June, and twice more by year-end. Of course, much depends on what happens in the Middle East and the continued halt to traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, hampering around a fifth of the world’s supplies of oil and gas. Oil prices have hit a four-year high , amid the prospect of fresh escala...

bymuratdeniz Stock index futures rose on Thursday as investors assessed a slew of economic data, including the key PCE and GDP reports. Here are the four stocks to watch on the day: ConocoPhillips ( COP ) was down 1.7% in premarket trading Thursday despite beating Q1 adjusted earnings expectations. The energy company said disrupted operations in the Middle East caused it to lower its annual production forecast. The firm is a partner in QatarEnergy’s liquefied natural gas export plant, one of the world’s largest LNG providers, and repairs from Iranian attacks on the facility during the war are expected to take 3-5 years. Eli Lilly ( LLY ) added approximately 6% in premarket trading Thursday after the Indiana-based pharma giant raised its full-year outlook alongside better-than-expected Q1 2026 financials driven by its GLP-1 franchise. The company reported $19.8 billion in revenue for the quarter, indicating approximately 56% year-over-year growth and exceeding consensus by $2 billion as volume gains offset the impact from lower prices for its GLP-1 products Mounjaro and Zepbound. Apple ( AAPL ) shares will be watched as the Magnificent Seven member is set to report FQ2 results after Thursday’s close, with analysts expecting ~18% year-over-year EPS growth on ~15% revenue expansion. A major leadership transition is underway, with Tim Cook set to move into an executive chairman role and John Ternus stepping in as CEO, signaling a stronger product and engineering focus. Amazon ( AMZN ) was up 3.8% in premarket trading after releasing its first-quarter earnings report. The Seattle-based e-commerce giant reported total revenue in North America in FQ1 was up 12% to $104.1 billion, while international revenue was 19% higher at $39.8 billion. Total revenue was up 16.6% year-over-year to $181.5 billion, exceeding the $177.2 billion consensus estimate. lcva2/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Introduction As the Mag 7 earnings are in full swing, I have no choice but to decide what stocks I want to cover. This time around, I decided to go with Microsoft Corporation ( MSFT ), since I initiated coverage a few months ago on this platform, discussing "SaaSapocalypse" and its impact on the stock price. Back then, not only did I rate MSFT as a Buy, but I also opened a position myself. Previous Coverage Slightly less than 2 months have passed since then, and the stock hasn’t done much even after the fiscal Q3 earnings , which came ahead of all of the expectations. Today, I’ll take a look at the results and the valuation, and try to understand what to expect from MSFT going forward. Q3 2026 Microsoft had just delivered another record quarter, driven by the rapid AI adoption, which naturally restructures the companies that benefit from it. It is not surprising to see record-breaking numbers, since Microsoft has been setting new highs for the past 7 quarters in a row in terms of sales, making Q3 2026 an 8th-quarter of record revenues. Financials Total revenue is at $82.9 billion, representing a growth of 18% YoY, or 15% growth in Constant Currency (CC). It beat the market expectation of $81 billion by a comfortable margin, which was also expected, since MSFT hasn’t missed on revenue since Q2 2023, and on EPS since Q4 2022. We can see that gross margin percentage decrease was due to the investment in AI capacity buildout, the same as higher operating expense, which is necessary for R&D. Growth of around 20% for companies by size, like Microsoft, isn’t happening in a vacuum. It is a result of investments that the company made a few years ago, and if it wants to make sure the growth continues in the future, it must continue pouring money into the business. FY26 Q3 Financial Summary The confirmation that the growth is powered by past investments is the fact that this performance is largely powered by the Microsoft Cloud, which is...

Popular sentiment has been growing since 2017, when the US failed in providing disaster relief after Hurricane Maria “Mandarin hotel! Out of Puerto Rico!” was the refrain of dozens of demonstrators on 21 April 2025 as they took over the lobby of the tony Manhattan hotel. One protester walked around holding a Puerto Rican pro-independence flag, a sign of the anti-colonialist movement advocating for sovereignty from the United States. In the atrium of the nearby luxury mall, the Shops at Columbus Circle, organizers unfurled a long banner that read in Spanish “No to Esencia”. They scattered informational flyers on the mall’s floor about their opposition to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group project slated to open in 2028. The hotel group plans to partially operate the $2bn Esencia , luxury hotel rooms and a residential settlement, in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, and activists held the demonstration to spotlight the multinational hospitality group’s expansion into a fragile coastal area. Puerto Rican demonstrators and their allies from the group Juventud Unida por la Independencia (JUPI) say that the project would reap environmental disaster by destroying more than 1,500 acres (600 hectares) of protected land with archaeological sites.
