peshkov/iStock via Getty Images Intro We last wrote on Vuzix Corporation ( VUZI ) in December 2023, when we rated the US-based smart-glasses and waveguides manufacturer a 'Sell' due to negative top-line growth and sustained cash-flow burn, despite the company 'painting up' its future potential. The bearish call at the time was the right call, as shares by the following September stooped well below $1 a share, before finally bottoming out on news of the $20 million Quanta investment, designed to shore up the financing somewhat and support forward-looking waveguide design in the process. As we see from the technical chart below, that announcement quickly spiked shares from well under $1 to over $5 within the space of four months. Since early 2025, however, shares have traded in a range-bound manner, printing both lower highs and higher lows. Although bulls may point to a bullish symmetrical triangle or coil (which mainly play themselves out as a continuation pattern), technical analysis in the likes of micro-cap plays such as Vuzix (> $200 million market-cap), many times, is not that dependable due to the lack of strong volume numbers, all things remaining equal. VUZI 2-Year Technicals (Stockcharts.com) High Hurdle Rate Increases Downside Risk Therefore, instead of focusing on long-term promises, which Vuzix's management continues to provide the market on its earnings calls (consistently citing the potential for its products to go mainstream), downside risk remains tangible for the following reason. As the beta in this stock is elevated at 1.37, the formula clearly demonstrates why equity investors need to be careful here, especially taking into account the expected release of the company's Q1 earnings on the 8th of May. Cost of equity = Risk-Free Rate + ( BETA ) x (Equity Risk Premium) If we use something like the 10-year US bond yield (4.4%) and a third-party calculation for our equity-risk-premium (4.46%), we see that VUZI's Cost of equity = 4.46% + (1.37)(4.4%) = ...

Sometimes markets throw investors curveballs, and the war in Iran is a prime example. Many market participants expected armed conflicts to be catalysts for defense stocks . It's a reasonable expectation to be sure, but the market isn't known for making things easy. The war in Iran has dragged on longer than expected, and speaking of drags, that's exactly what the broader aerospace and defense segment is dealing with now. For the three months ended April 28, the iShares Aerospace and Defense ETF (NYSEMKT: ITA) , one of the bellwether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) addressing the industry, is off almost 9%. This defense contractor is offering some value and real compounding potential. Image source: Getty Images. Continue reading
