Policing and government policy are essential, but not sufficient to address rising hate crime against Jews The stabbing of two men in north-west London on Wednesday by an attacker described as seeking anyone “visibly Jewish” would be horrifying under any circumstances. That it comes amid rising antisemitic crime in the area, in the UK and around the world makes it all the more frightening. A community persecuted throughout history faces a fresh wave of hatred and abuse. Shock and grief are mixed with fear, with some British Jews asking whether they can be safe in the UK. This is the third attack in five weeks in the same part of Golders Green alone. Last October, two people were killed in an attack on a synagogue in Heaton Park, Manchester, on Yom Kippur. In December, two men were found guilty of plotting to infiltrate and open fire on a march against antisemitism in the same city. That month, a pair of gunmen killed 15 people at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney. Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? Kalshi Inc. has agreed to limit trading hours on new financial contracts tied to crops like corn and wheat after facing pushback from the agriculture industry and derivatives exchanges. Trading on Kalshi, the most popular US prediction market, generally happens around the clock, seven days a week, but the company has told groups representing the agriculture industry that for certain products it will stick to the same hours as traditional exchanges. An industry group representing derivatives exchanges, traders and commodities producers, the Commodity Markets Council , organized two calls with Kalshi to express its concerns about the startup’s new agriculture contracts, according to people familiar with the discussions who asked not to be named because the conversations were private. Kalshi announced in mid-April that it planned to create a new commodities trading hub with contracts tied to everything from corn and soybeans to lithium and natural gas. “The agriculture community is critically important, and we value their input,” John Bivona, head of government affairs at Kalshi, said on Thursday. “After listening to their feedback, we’re in the process of limiting trading hours on commodity markets to traditional hours. We’re grateful for their engagement and look forward to continuing conversations as we bring more products to the space.” The CMC declined to comment on the conversations. Kalshi has exploded in popularity over the last year by offering wagers on elections, sports and other public events. Sports has accounted for a significant majority of the trading. But it has been moving further into products that already exist on traditional financial exchanges, including wagers on the price of oil and gas, and others connected to stock indexes and company earnings. The startup has shown a willingness to defend its turf when facing opposition to its novel product offerings. It is currently battling in court with several states that have said the company is running ...

By attacking the basic settlement between scientists and the state, the US president has proved that experts can’t avoid these fights Donald Trump’s war on science has been vicious and hugely damaging, but it is worth noting that he has lost some of its biggest battles. Last year, Mr Trump demanded that US federal scientific and medical research funding be cut by about half. But the budget Congress passed in February actually delivered a slight increase in overall funding – although specific Trump targets such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were cut. He also continues to chip away at science in other ways such as dismissing the board overseeing the National Science Foundation this week. Maga’s attacks on science have been nakedly political. Its defeats have been politics of a different sort, showing that the bipartisan pro-science consensus is still intact, and for the moment has the power to hold Mr Trump in check. Scientists themselves appear to be waking up to the potential of such politics. The organisation 314 Action, which supports Democratic scientists running for office, reported that more than 700 candidates – vying for local, congressional and gubernatorial positions – have sought its support ahead of the midterm elections this year, three times the usual number. Many gave the White House’s war on science as the reason for their political turn. Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? Feds Charge Sinaloa's Governor, Senator, Mayor, & Other Top Officials With Running A Narco-State Submitted by The Bureau's Sam Cooper, Federal prosecutors in New York have charged ten current and former senior Mexican government officials — among them the sitting governor of Sinaloa, a sitting federal senator, the mayor of the state capital, and the state’s former secretary of public security — with conspiring to protect the Sinaloa Cartel’s most powerful faction in exchange for millions of dollars in drug money , in what may be the most sweeping corruption indictment ever brought against a sitting government in the Western Hemisphere. The superseding indictment, filed in the Southern District of New York and unsealed Wednesday, charges all ten defendants with narcotics importation conspiracy — specifically, conspiracy to flood the United States with fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine — as well as conspiracy to possess machineguns and destructive devices in furtherance of drug trafficking. One defendant, a municipal police commander, faces additional charges of kidnapping resulting in death: the alleged abduction and murder of a Drug Enforcement Administration confidential source, his relative, and a 13-year-old boy, carried out using a police patrol car. The document does not describe a cartel that corrupted a government. It describes a government that became the cartel’s operating infrastructure. In what appears to be the first instance in American legal history of the Justice Department indicting a sitting Mexican governor, prosecutors allege that Ruben Rocha Moya, 76, who has served as governor of Sinaloa since November 2021, did not simply accept cartel money. He allegedly made his deal with the Chapitos — the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman — before he was ever elected, in a meeting guarded by Cartel sicarios armed with machineguns, and delivered on every term thereafter. Rubén Rocha Moya, the governor of Sinaloa state... What makes the filing ex...

Senator Jack Reed says at hearing that defense secretary failed to give Trump accurate picture of war in Iran US politics live – latest updates Sign up for the Breaking News US newsletter email Pete Hegseth has failed to give Donald Trump an accurate picture of the war on Iran while resorting to “dangerously exaggerated” statements to create an inaccurate picture of a US military triumph, a senior Democrat told a Capitol Hill hearing on Thursday. Jack Reed, the ranking Democrat on the Senate armed services committee, told Hegseth, the defense secretary, that far from victory, US citizens were having to bear the cost of a war they did not support in the form of increased fuel prices. In this article AAPL Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNT watch now VIDEO 1:28 01:28 Big volatility priced into Apple as earnings come into focus Squawk on the Street For a stock that's gone nowhere for six months, Apple sure has options traders excited. Implied volatility in the stock suggests a 3.5% swing after earnings tonight, compared to an average move of just 1.8% following the last four quarterly reports. For context, among last night's big four tech reports, Amazon and Microsoft are underperforming their implied moves, while Alphabet and Meta are exceeding theirs. Call volumes and premiums are outpacing puts in Apple options, but the message is not necessarily bullish. More calls are now trading at the asking price than the bid price, meaning more traders are buying calls than selling them. That has shifted since the market open this morning when the spread was about even. A few of the biggest individual trades of the day were in this vein, with one trader collecting almost $1 million of premium by selling both $290 and $300-strike calls in the December 18 expiry. A similar trade collected more than $3 million by selling both the 240 and 250-strike calls expiring May 15. Bears in the stock may be looking to recent history as a guide: Apple stock has fallen after five of its last six earnings reports and after seven of the last ten. Still, the options flows are not as one-directional as they were ahead of other recent reports. At least one big trader felt the need to pay above the market asking price for $330,000 of 320-strike calls expiring July 17.
