Peer Review Is Broken - Here's How To Fix It Authored by Rob Jenkins and Michael R. Jenkins via the Brownstone Institute , Within academia, there seems to be a growing consensus that the peer-review system—once the backbone of academic scholarship—is broken . But is it irreparably so? Perhaps. At the very least, the breakdown of its current form is worth exploring. However, rather than abandoning the entire endeavor, we believe we have a novel solution. First, though, let us examine where the system went wrong. In the Middle Ages, most scientific research was self-published, as scholars shared their findings among themselves. But, as the profession grew, that became impractical, and the scientific journal was born as a way of disseminating information. A scholar would have an idea, investigate, summarize his conclusions, and submit the resulting manuscript to a journal. There, the editor or editors would consider it and decide whether to publish the work as-is, request revisions, or reject it altogether. Over time, as the number of scholars continued to proliferate, all of them under increasing pressure to publish, publish, publish—in order to be hired, earn tenure, and qualify for grants—the task of journal editors became overwhelming. There were just too many submissions to give them all fair consideration. And so they came up with the idea of farming out their evaluation of submissions to teams of unpaid reviewers, other scholars in the same field or a related field who were (theoretically, at least) qualified to judge the quality of the research under consideration. This would relieve some of the burden on the editors while also bestowing an additional stamp of legitimacy on the finished product. Whether a given piece of scholarship was worthy of publication was to be determined not just by one or two people but rather by a group of “blind” experts. Thus, the label “peer-reviewed” became the gold standard for scholarly research . A publication in a “peer-reviewe...

Three of the biggest names in private credit moved to reassure investors this week about the AI risks facing their software borrowers, deploying proprietary “score cards” and outside consultants. The findings: vulnerability is “medium” and “minimal,” and portfolios are “more insulated.” As investors across global markets question the survival of software businesses in the wake of rapid advances in artificial intelligence, Ares Management Corp. , Blackstone Inc. and Blue Owl Capital Inc. sought to quantify the potential damage hidden in their portfolios. Ares hired an outside consultant for the review, while Blackstone and Blue Owl used their own systems to evaluate their books. The message to investors was similar: the threat is serious, but the senior loans in their funds are largely protected. The asset managers went so far as to highlight software companies that would experience “tailwinds” from AI. “There is a sharpened focus on this book given the noise in the market,” said Ethan Kaye, a research analyst at Lucid Capital Markets. He expects more asset managers to disclose how they are evaluating risks for businesses facing AI disruption. Software lending makes up about 20% of the loans deployed by business development companies, Barclays analysts including Corry Short estimated, but the actual exposure may be much larger, as many private credit funds label their software loans as something different. That has made it challenging for investors to figure out what’s at risk. Blackstone’s flagship private credit fund, known as BCRED, used an internal AI risk score card to comb through its portfolio, finding that less than 5% of investments were facing AI headwinds. The analysis included risks to end markets and business models, the fund said in a filing Wednesday. “The software sector will have to adapt to AI,” Blackstone managers said in a letter to shareholders, adding that they believe they have invested in businesses that are “more insulated from AI-related dis...

The S & P 500 has just notched a fresh record, and while investors may be reluctant to bulk up on fixed income, now is actually a good time to buy some high-quality government bonds, UBS said. The broad-market benchmark hit a new high on Thursday as investors looked past a post-earnings sell-off in Meta Platforms and Microsoft . The S & P 500 is heading for a 10% surge in April alone, largely driven by technology. "After years of strong equity performance relative to bonds, many investors can rebalance toward fixed income, bringing allocations back in line with long-term plans," said Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, chief investment officer Americas and global head of equities, UBS Financial Services. "This is critical especially when stocks are at all-time highs and equity valuations have increased," she added in a Tuesday report. US2Y 1M mountain U.S. 2-year Treasury yield Hoffmann-Burchardi's team pointed to a recent run-up in benchmark government bond yields, which presents investors with a "compelling entry point." Bond prices and yields move inversely to one another. Treasury yields inched lower on Thursday after first-quarter gross domestic product growth missed estimates. But a day earlier rates on U.S. two-year , five-year and 10-year Treasury notes touched their highest levels in about a month. "We favor quality government bonds with short to medium maturities, as they not only offer appealing yields, but they also can potentially help stabilize portfolios during periods of uncertainty," Hoffmann-Burchardi said. Income and relative safety Bonds with shorter maturities have less price sensitivity to swings in interest rates – meaning they have shorter duration. They also offer attractive interest income: The 3-month Treasury bill has a yield of 3.68%, while its 1-year counterpart yields 3.72%. Investors hoping to bolster their fixed income sleeve can purchase individual bonds. They can also use those issues to create a ladder of staggered maturities to help smoot...

The genetic code is central to life. With minor variations, everything uses the same sets of three DNA bases to encode the same 20 amino acids. We have discovered no major exceptions to this, leading researchers to conclude that this code probably dated back to the last common ancestor of all life on Earth. But there has been a lot of informed speculation about how that genetic code initially evolved. Most hypotheses suggest that earlier forms of life had partial genetic codes and used fewer than 20 amino acids. To test these hypotheses, a team from Columbia and Harvard decided to see if they could get rid of one of the 20 currently in use. And, as a first attempt, they engineered a portion of the ribosome that worked without using an otherwise essential amino acid: isoleucine. Changing the code First off, why would you do this? Most work in the field has focused on altering the genetic code in ways that are useful , such as using more than 20 amino acids to enable interesting chemistry. Read full article Comments
