Japan likely spent around $34.5 billion Thursday in its first currency intervention to prop up the yen since July 2024, according to a Bloomberg analysis of central bank accounts. The scale of intervention was probably around ¥5.4 trillion, based on a comparison of Bank of Japan accounts and money broker forecasts. In 2024, authorities spent an average of ¥3.8 trillion on four occasions to support the yen. The yen appreciated dramatically Thursday evening after Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama warned that “bold action” — meaning intervention in ministry parlance — was imminent. A person familiar with the matter later told Bloomberg that authorities had entered the market. The central bank data released Friday showed it expects its current account to fall by ¥9.48 trillion due to fiscal factors on Thursday next week, the first business day after the Golden Week holidays. That was a much bigger decline than the roughly ¥4.08 trillion estimated by money brokers at Tokyo Tanshi, Central Tanshi and Ueda Yagi Tanshi. This was Katayama’s first currency intervention and was seen largely as an initial success, as it spurred a yen gain of more than 3%. Still, the battle is hardly over. The yen was trading at around 156.55 per dollar Friday evening in Tokyo. With the market gripped by high volatility of late, Katayama and her colleague Atsushi Mimura , a top currency official, are staying on alert, and Katayama warned traders to do so as well, saying Thursday that they best not put their cellphones down during the five-day Golden Week period. Speaking to reporters earlier Friday, Mimura indicated a readiness to intervene in the crude oil futures market. We Are/DigitalVision via Getty Images Money supply is a very important indicator. It helps show how tight or loose current monetary conditions are regardless of what the Fed is doing with interest rates. Even if the Fed is tight, if money supply is increasing, it has an inflationary effect. One key metric shown below is the “Wenzel” 13-week annualized money supply figure. It was made popular by the late Robert Wenzel, who tracked the metric weekly as an indicator for where the economy might be headed. In 2020, the Fed started reporting the data monthly instead of weekly. It should also be noted that money supply data can be heavily revised in future months. Recent Trends Seasonally adjusted money supply has been growing on a consistent monthly basis since November 2023 (29 straight months). The latest month (March) showed growth of $59B, which is slightly below the recent average. Despite the smaller growth when compared to recent months, this is still massive growth in the overall M2 money supply. Figure 1: MoM M2 Change (Seasonally Adjusted) The increase in March was 3.2% annualized, which is below the 4.6% over the past year. Figure 2: M2 Growth Rates The March average is typically around 4.2%, which puts the latest month below average for March. Figure 3: Average Monthly Growth Rates Non-seasonally adjusted shows significant growth in March and April ( note: this data is ahead of the seasonally adjusted data above ). Figure 4: MoM M2 Change (Non-Seasonally Adjusted) The weekly data shows what happened: the recent data has been moving with more consistency rather than exhibiting a choppier behavior as it did for most of the past. Figure 5: WoW M2 Change The “Wenzel” 13-week Money Supply The late Robert Wenzel of Economic Policy Journal used a modified calculation to track money supply. He used a trailing 13-week average growth rate annualized as defined in his book The Fed Flunks. He specifically used the weekly data that was not seasonally adjusted. His analogy ...

Andrew Harnik | Getty Images News | Getty Images U.S. President Donald Trump repealed tariffs on a key U.K. export on Thursday, after a state visit from King Charles III and Queen Camilla appeared to help mend transatlantic relations dampened by a series of political standoffs. "In Honor of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful Country, I will be removing the Tariffs and Restrictions on Whiskey having to do with Scotland's ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on Whiskey and Bourbon, two very important Industries within Scotland and Kentucky," the president said in a Thursday Truth Social post. "People have wanted to do this for a long time, in that there had been great Inter-Country Trade, especially having to do with the Wooden Barrels used. The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking!" he added. "And I did it in honor of the King and Queen who just left," he said. The U.K. government confirmed to CNBC on Friday that the changes announced the previous day would apply to all whisky tariffs, including those on Irish whiskey. Last year, the U.K. became the first country in the world to secure a trade deal with the Trump administration after the president's so-called liberation day tariffs were unveiled. The terms of the U.K.'s deal included a 10% blanket tariff on goods imported to the United States. That meant a pre-existing zero-tariff trade envi...

Pop psychodrama Mother Mary might look and sound the part but it’s the latest failed attempt to turn the life of an arena-touring singer into a compelling movie For anyone with even the slightest interest in Hollywood, it is not entirely surprising that Anne Hathaway recently appeared on Popcast , the New York Times critics’ podcast that has become a premier destination for music promotion. After all, the actor – whose last appearance in a musical bagged her an Academy Award – is a major part of one of the best recent movies to show pop stardom on screen. No, it’s not Mother Mary , the new A24 psychodrama for which Hathaway is making the press rounds as a world-famous diva in the midst of a spiritual and sartorial crisis. I’m thinking of The Idea of You , the improbably glossy 2024 romance in which Hathaway’s 40-year-old divorcee hooks up with a much-younger singer who looks suspiciously like Harry Styles. The Idea of You successfully conveyed the idea that Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine) was the breakout star of a crushable 2010s boyband with a feral fanbase called August Moon. And by “successfully conveyed”, I mean the film remixed a string of One Direction-esque iconography – the jaunty rock-lite choruses, fizzy cheerfulness and class clown antics – into actual music videos and convincingly banal bops. The bar is low; many, many films have created bespoke pop stars and/or music for alternate cultural histories, but vanishingly few transcend pastiche. To be an echo is, generally, enough. The American author on the magic of Yasunari Kawabata, the hidden layers of Henry James and coming late to the genius of Muriel Spark My earliest reading memory I remember reading throughout my childhood, but it’s hard to identify my earliest memory of reading. In a lot of ways, it’s as if my childhood began when I learned to read. I do remember taking a copy of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s Dangerous Liaisons off the shelf when I was maybe 10 or 11 – far too young to be reading it. I was suitably scandalised and excited by it. My favourite book growing up I read a lot of Theodore Dreiser growing up, for reasons that are mysterious to me now. I don’t know how I came to him: he wasn’t assigned in school and no one in my family was reading his books. But his focus was on female characters and perhaps even then, that felt notable. I started with Sister Carrie, then read Jennie Gerhardt and An American Tragedy, but Sister Carrie was the one I returned to again and again. Continue reading...

Americans are fed up with an establishment that has abandoned the working class. It’s time to organize for change On Friday, more than 3,000 May Day protests will take place across the United States – more than double last year’s number. Workers, students and families are calling for a strike: no school, no work, no shopping, and an end to billionaire rule. I’m headed to the streets with members of my own union, the United Auto Workers, in New York City. Americans are fed up – and not just with Donald Trump. People are angry at a Democratic party establishment that has abandoned the working class, that treated the labor movement like a turnout machine instead of the pillar of democracy it is, that funded a genocide in Gaza while ignoring a cost of living crisis, and that took its own base so completely for granted that it pushed millions out of the political process entirely. Claire Valdez is a New York state assemblymember, union organizer, and Democratic socialist running for Congress Continue reading...

As aid cuts strip back food and supplies, the facility offers a rare hope for Rohingya women who previously faced frightening and risky conditions to give birth Kutupalong camp is at its quietest just before dawn. A thin grey light over the hills of Cox’s Bazar in south-east Bangladesh, traces the outlines of tarpaulin roofs and bamboo frames – the fragile architecture of the largest refugee camp in the world. Inside the shelters, women wake early not out of habit, but necessity, stepping carefully over sleeping children, pausing when any cramp or dizziness sets in. For many Rohingya women here, pregnancy is endured rather than anticipated, shadowed by the knowledge that when labour comes, it may be far from the care that could keep them safe. MF3d/iStock via Getty Images Mag 7 Hyperscalers Continue Capex Boom The world’s four largest hyperscalers beat top- and bottom-line earnings expectations this week, but it became clear that investors are thinking about much more. Namely, returns from heavy AI investments. The big three cloud service providers, Amazon ( AMZN ), Google ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ), and Microsoft ( MSFT ), demonstrated robust AI-driven growth resulting from significant investments, while Meta ( META ) also delivered impressive overall results. According to Morgan Stanley, despite worries about spending, the hyperscalers are adding capacity to meet surging demand that's driving major revenue growth. However, aside from Google, the results were apparently not enough for many investors based on the market reactions. Top Tech: Hyperscaler Fantastic Four Some of the most favored artificial intelligence-driven stocks experienced significant earnings growth in the last few years. Below is a quick summary of the latest earnings, reaction, and capex plans for each hyperscaler: Alphabet : Although Q1 capex doubled and Alphabet raised its full-year capital spending target by $5B to $180B - $190B, the stock surged as management tied AI investments directly to tangible financial gains. Alphabet said AI experiences drove search usage, with queries hitting all-time highs, while Google Cloud revenue grew 63% year-over-year. Amazon : Shares rallied initially after highlighting record AWS revenue growth, only to pull back in early trading the following day before recovering by market close. While Amazon maintained plans to invest $200B in capex in 2026, capital spending grew 67% in the trailing twelve months. Microsoft : Despite solid fiscal Q3 results, shares fell the day after the software giant projected calendar year capex spend to reach $190B. Analysts expressed concerns over a potential disconnect between capital investments and revenue growth, apparently unsatisfied with Microsoft’s AI business growing by ...
