Jake Nesler’s AI trading bot got one big decision right in its first week. It ignored the chase. When Nvidia Corp. ’s earnings sent the stock surging in late November, the agent — trained on Nesler’s own trading instincts — argued with itself over whether to follow the momentum. Fortunately, the bot decided against it, as chasing the high would have lumbered Nesler’s portfolio with an estimated $10,000 loss that week. Nesler, a 29-year-old software engineer in Scranton, Pennsylvania, had burned himself out trying to trade options around his day job. He found himself inspired by an Anthropic experiment in which the firm’s Claude model controlled an office vending machine. But what if, instead of offering snacks, Claude could be trained to buy and sell stocks instead? Nesler spent two and a half weeks teaching the model how he thought about risk, entry signals and position sizing, then set it loose on a simulated brokerage account on Alpaca, an algorithmic trading platform, with $100,000 in fake money to spend. “I wanted something that could be a proxy for the way I think and carry out those things while I’m doing other stuff,” he said in an interview. The rest of the agent’s week was less impressive, losing money on a series of speculative trades that didn’t go its way. After five days of trading, Nesler was left with one good call alongside a string of losses. Across equities, crypto and prediction markets, a growing legion of retail traders are training AI agents to buy and sell assets on their behalf. It’s a sign of a new era in retail investing, where traders believe that AI-powered tools can produce better investment outcomes — and that anything still done manually is a process waiting for improvement. Open-source platforms such as OpenClaw allow users to talk to their AI agents through accessible messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, attracting hordes of wannabe stock-pickers without a tech school resumé. All they have to do is connect an AI model to the s...

primeimages/E+ via Getty Images Portfolio management Joshua Cummings, CFA John Jordan Investment environment Equity markets experienced volatility in the first quarter, as artificial intelligence (AI) exuberance gave way to anxiety. Early in the quarter, investors grew more cautious about the valuations and capital spending plans of large U.S. technology companies. We also saw multiple compression in software stocks facing potential AI-related disintermediation. Volatility increased further in March, amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty and surging crude oil prices. Against this backdrop, investors rotated away from growth stocks toward value shares. Portfolio review During the quarter, we saw a broad-based decline in software stocks on concerns over how AI may disrupt the competitive landscape. These fears pressured shares of Intuit ( INTU ), an enterprise software company whose products include QuickBooks and TurboTax. Worries over potential AI disintermediation rose following news of a new AI-powered tax planning tool, which investors feared might directly compete with TurboTax. We believe such fears are overstated. Intuit's management is looking to incorporate AI across its project ecosystem, which could strengthen its competitive positioning while providing new revenue-growth opportunities. Intuit has continued to deliver solid financial performance and guidance, aided by strong growth in its QuickBooks Online business. It also has continued to return money to shareholders through an aggressive share buyback program. Worries over potential AI-driven market disruption also weighed on shares of Workday ( WDAY ), a developer of enterprise cloud-based software applications for finance and human resources. Workday delivered solid fourth-quarter earnings growth, bolstered by double-digit year-over-year subscription growth. However, shares declined as investors questioned its ability to sustain this pace of subscription growth, especially after company management ...

British Police Raid Islamic Group Accused Of Sex Trafficking And Slavery At least nine members of a Cheshire Islamic group have been arrested in a raid of 500 British police officers as part of an investigation into sexual offenses, slavery and forced marriage. Officers received reports of human trafficking, rape, and other crimes involving members of a group known as the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, based in Crewe. Seven men and three women were taken into custody, according to a statement from the Cheshire Police, who said the investigation was initiated because of allegations made by a woman who was previously part of the group in 2023. Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley, of Cheshire Constabulary, said: "Today’s operation is the outcome of a detailed and robust investigation into reports of serious sexual offenses, forced marriage and modern slavery involving members of a religious group called Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Crewe. While those arrested are members of the group, I want to make clear that this is not an investigation into the religion, this is an investigation into the serious allegations which have been reported to us..." The AROPL's is a religious movement founded in 2015 by Abdullah Hashem Aba Al-Sadiq (Egyptian-American raised Sunni Muslim). It draws heavily from Shia Islamic traditions. The group self-identifies with Islamic roots, uses Islamic terminology (referring to their leader as the Qaim/Mahdi appointed in relation to Prophet Muhammad), and maintains many Islamic practices. British authorities in the UK have been quick to disconnect the sect from the wider Islamic migrant community. The reasons for this are obvious - The British government is under considerable pressure to stop hiding migrant crime and Islamic crime, but their political agendas are deeply intertwined with third-world immigration. Islamic groups consistently deny that the actions of grooming gangs have any connection to Muslim culture. Islamic fundamentali...

Guido Mieth/DigitalVision via Getty Images The BNY Mellon High Yield Strategies Fund ( DHF ) is a closed-end fund that investors might choose to use as a method of earning a high level of current income from the assets in their portfolios. The fund actually manages to do fairly well at the provision of income, as it boasts an 8.64% yield at the current share price. However, the fact that this is a bond fund means that the yield could end up being much lower on an after-tax basis. As such, it is best to hold shares of the fund in some sort of tax-advantaged account, such as a retirement account. In addition to this, regular readers know that I am hesitant about investing in any bonds at all due to concerns that inflation will continue to be a problem going forward. We actually saw this in the most recent figures, which show a significant acceleration in the rate of inflation. This suggests that potential investors may wish to be cautious before purchasing shares of DHF and ensure that having a leveraged junk bond fund in your portfolio is appropriate for your particular goals. With that said, the higher yield of this fund relative to bond indices should help it do a better job of preserving the purchasing power of your wealth than a bond index fund, especially if you opt to reinvest some of the income that it provides. The Current Yield-Starved Market The website for the BNY Mellon High Yield Strategies Fund makes the following statement: [The fund] seeks to provide high current income for today’s yield-challenged market. The description explicitly describes today’s market as being yield-challenged. This is, admittedly, something of an apt description depending on which asset class we are talking about. Common stocks, for example, can certainly be described as “yield-challenged,” as the largest exchange-traded index tracking large-capitalization common stocks, the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ), only yields 1.04% at the current price. Furthermore, except...

"Equity and income was $3.5 million for the quarter when compared to $10.2 million in the first quarter of 2025," and the company attributed the change primarily to "a lower home closing volume" at its Latitude Margaritaville Watersound JV.
