Yiewsley by Daljit Nagra; Mer de Glace by Małgorzata Lebda; The Intentions of Thunder by Patricia Smith; Cherry Blossom at Nightbreak by Rishi Dastidar; Dark Night by St John of the Cross, translated by Martha Sprackland Yiewsley by Daljit Nagra (Faber, £14.99) Given the relish with which Nagra pushes and pulls at English, it’s worth noting that Yiewsley is a real west London suburb. This location allows him to continue his career-long exploration of childhood working-class Sikh experience and, through it, wider questions of identity. But as Nagra turns 60, location is becoming increasingly a matter of time as well as space. The classic struggle of each first generation to arrive in Britain, and the pressure on its kids to make good, now sits within a 1960s and 70s time capsule. Enoch Powell and the National Front cast violent shadows, but parkas, school blancmange and cricket strike a sweeter, almost elegiac note. Mer de Glace by Małgorzata Lebda, translated by Mira Rosenthal (Fitzcarraldo, £12.99) Much as they have in prose, Fitzcarraldo are awakening British poetry publishing to the glamour of braininess. Mer de Glace is named for a dying French glacier, but the sequence is set on the 1,047km-long Polish river Vistula, along which Lebda ran in 2021. Images of fires and firesides recur: we are all of us out in a wild, vulnerable world. This is ecopoetry at its most profound and informal, challenging and pleasurable. Rosenthal’s quietly fluent translations give us “books that help us close the mouth of night”, light as “Baltic mercury” and, as the runner nears the end of her journey, a “pelvis tilting / towards the open sea”. With a feral energy and a Liam Gallagher growl, the Dublin band’s beguiling music is a great evolution of a venerable genre From Dublin Recommended if you like Lankum, the Mary Wallopers, the Pogues Up next Debut EP It’s a Hell of an Age out now, playing festivals this summer and touring the UK in autumn Madra Salach means “dirty dog” in Irish, which feels about right for a group of lads bringing a feral, snarling energy to the country’s latest folk revival. Their sound builds ably on some of the architects of that resurgence – the eerie shruti box droning and carefully layered instrumentation of Lankum, the shimmering wails of Lisa O’Neill. Add a hint of Liam Gallagher to the mix – frontman Paul Banks’s voice has an astonishing force and clarity, and he affects a tempestuous, attack-and-withdraw relationship with the microphone – and you’ve got a very exciting package indeed. The Beijing Auto Show is currently taking place in China, offering those of us behind the Trump tariff curtain a peek at what's increasingly being dubbed the world's most advanced car market. Chinese EVs leave everyone else in the dust, we're told, with infotainment that makes your smartphone look like a StarTac, range numbers that would make a turbodiesel Audi weep, and charging that might be even faster than filling up with gas, depending on the size of your tank. As an American, I mostly have to take someone else's word for that. If there's one thing Democratic politicians can agree on with Republicans, even now, it's that they don't want cars from Chinese automakers on US roads. Toward the end of his administration, President Joe Biden levied a 100 percent tariff on Chinese EVs. Under the Biden and then Trump administrations, Congress passed a law restricting the sale of Chinese-linked connected car software in the US. President Trump has added further tariffs to Chinese imports , making their cars even less competitive here. And just this week , more than 70 Democratic representatives called for maintaining barriers to Chinese cars for both national security and economic reasons. This puts those elected officials increasingly out of step with popular sentiment on the Internet (I'm using the Ars comments and social media platform Bluesky as my bellwethers). From what I can see, there's strong appetite for those sweet, cheap Chinese electric vehicles. Headlines like Reuters' claim that "[f]or the average price of a car in the US, you could buy 5 new Chinese EVs" only reinforce that sentiment. Read full article Comments

Bruce Yeung | Getty Images Pickleball Inc., the new parent company of Major League Pickleball and the PPA Tour, said Friday it has raised a record $225 million in new investment, as the paddle sport continues its rapid growth trajectory. The latest investment comes from Apollo Global Management's newly created sports fund, Apollo Sports Capital , and Dundon Capital Partners , owned by billionaire Tom Dundon. Dundon is an owner of the Portland Trail Blazers NBA team and the Carolina Hurricanes NHL team and was an early investor in pickleball. The fresh funds bring the total investment in Pickleball Inc. to $315 million, as investors continue to look at emerging sports as a place to park their money . The raise values Pickleball Inc. at $750 million, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked to remain unnamed because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the company's valuation. The deal also includes rolling up several pickleball assets under the Pickleball Inc. umbrella, creating what the company called the largest pickleball ecosystem to date. Pickleball Inc. will take on a portfolio of pickleball assets previously owned by Dundon, including Pickleball Central , a leading site for pickleball equipment founded in 2006. The portfolio also includes PickleballTournaments.com, software that powers thousands of tournaments across all levels of play, as well as Just Courts , a pickleball court installer. Pickleball Inc.'s newly merged business verticals combined generated over $140 million in 2025 revenue, the company said. In a release, MLP and PPA Tour CEO Connor Pardoe called the new investment a "seismic day" for pickleball's rapidl...

The Dyson Spot + Scrub Ai is Dyson’s first combination robot vacuum and mop. | Photo by Jennifer Pattison Tuohy / The Verge I'm deeply conflicted about the Dyson Spot + Scrub Ai robot vacuum and mop . It's the company's best robotic floor cleaner to date, with excellent mopping performance, good navigation and obstacle detection, and a multifunction dock that takes much of the busywork off your hands. But Dyson's first attempt at a vacuum-and-mop combo is a worse vacuum than its predecessors, and that's because there's no Dyson motor in this vacuum . You read that right. For $1,200, the Spot + Scrub doesn't get you a Dyson vacuum; instead, you're getting a third-party motor and brush system. wen ya/E+ via Getty Images The departure of the first iron ore shipments from Guinea's new deepwater port at Morebaya is more than just a milestone — it is a signal that China's multi-decade push for resource security is entering a new phase. As the world's largest untapped source of high-grade ore, Simandou Blocks 1 & 2 and Simandou Blocks 3 & 4 sit at the heart of efforts to diversify supply away from Australia and Brazil and drive the green steel transition. While official timelines have always been ambitious, independent vessel tracking now offers confirmation that progress is happening on the ground. Using Commodities at Sea's vessel tracking data, this article provides an assessment of the project's initial ramp-up. A steady stream of shipments has been departing from the new Morebaya Terminal. A look at recent vessel movements reveals a flow of Capesize and Newcastlemax bulk carriers, each laden with substantial cargoes. The initial shipment carried by Winning Youth departed Guinea on Dec. 2, 2025, arriving at Majishan Port in Zhejiang, China, on Jan. 17, 2026. Subsequently, the Sunny Mamou departed in late February with 202,170 metric tons of iron ore, followed shortly by the China Vista carrying 88,112 mt. The involvement of key project stakeholders is clear, with vessels such as RTM Cartier loading 201,397 mt and ships linked to Winning International, such as the Winning Spirit, carrying another 175,629 mt. These shipments are destined exclusively for major Chinese ports, including Yantai, Shanghai and Qingdao, underscoring Simandou's strategic role. Critically, some cargoes have been received directly by end users, with the Great Sui and Winning Youth delivering a combined total of more than 282,000 mt to the Majishan Ore Terminal, operated by steel giant China Baowu Steel. Company guidance and ramp-up trajectory The shipping activity observed aligns with the official project timelines from the two main consortia, Rio Tinto's Simfer SA and Winning Consort...

The U.S. government now spends more on interest payments than it does on national defense. In the 2025 fiscal year, interest expense was $970 billion, nearly triple what it was five years ago, and it's still climbing. For some investors, looking at those numbers leads to an inevitable conclusion that this type of fiscal dynamic ends with liberal use of the printing press -- and it won't be newspapers getting printed, but money. That conclusion is colloquially now known as "the big print," a theory initially popularized by investment manager Lawrence Lepard's 2025 book of the same name. Lepard's book posits that the government will be forced to print its way out of its fiscal mess, debasing the dollar in the process. The popular version of the theory often runs far wilder than Lepard's nuanced case for sound money, but even a conservative reading of the fiscal data today suggests that more inflation is a reasonable starting point to plan around. And for investors looking to prepare for this possible scenario, crypto assets like Bitcoin , (CRYPTO: BTC) Zcash , (CRYPTO: ZEC) and Tether Gold (CRYPTO: XAUT) can offer a distinct form of protection. hapabapa/iStock Editorial via Getty Images There have been a lot of interesting things that have transpired in the months that followed my previous coverage on Amazon.com, Inc. ( AMZN ). And despite increased macroeconomic volatility, it bounced back, delivered nearly 30% returns, and justified my bullish stance. This should not be surprising if you consider its market positioning and high adaptability to evolving market trends. I understand the doubts about its recent capacity constraints and huge spending. Yet, I believe that AMZN remains a force to reckon with considering the ecosystem it has built over the years and capabilities that can't easily be replicated. Also, valuation remains one of its attractions as it stays underpriced. Technicals adhere to it as bullish signals persist, although overbuying warrants extra caution. AMZN Q1 2026: A Strong Start Making the day-to-day activities of customers easy and productive has always been the core of Amazon.com, Inc. Over the years, that mission has paid off as the number of customers grew, allowing it to maintain its strong global market presence, expand into other niches, and build its own environment that people will most likely choose not to leave anymore. And with its continued technological innovation, it has continued to evolve and conquer both the B2C and B2B markets. This was still reflected in its most recent performance. In Q1 2026, its total net sales amounted to $181.52B , up by 16.6% YoY from $155.66B. This double-digit growth rate showed its sustained and robust growth. This also proved AMZN to be exceptionally strong, proving that the law of big numbers doesn't apply to it. In fact, this growth was still a bit stronger than in my previous coverage at 13.4%. This could tell us about the resilience of its business model despite macroeconomic volatility. If you look at its performance per segment, you can say that AMZN maintained its dominance in the online space. Its online stores and third-party selle...

(02:41) This is an abridged transcript. Sandisk ( SNDK ) released its third quarter fiscal 2026 financial results post-market on Thursday, which shattered estimates. For the quarter ended March 31, it reported adjusted earnings per share of $23.41 versus the consensus estimate of $14.66. Revenue for the third quarter increased 252% year over year to $5.95B, which was much more than the $4.73B estimate. Looking ahead, Sandisk expects fourth-quarter revenue to range from $7.75B to $8.25B and adjusted EPS to range from $30 to $33. The consensus estimate expected revenue of $6.65B and EPS of $23.38. SNDK is down 6% premarket and up +3,300% year to date. Apple ( AAPL ) is up 3% in premarket action after reporting quarterly results that were above Wall Street's forecast. Apple said it earned an adjusted $2.01 per share as revenue rose 17% year-over-year to come in at $111.18B. Revenue related to the iPhone came in at $56.99B, slightly above the $56.98B estimate. Overall product revenue was $80.21B, slightly above the $79.26B estimate. Analysts had expected the company to earn an adjusted $1.96 per share on $109.66B in revenue. Seeking Alpha analyst YR Research said that Apple showed “sustained elevated growth levels, as expected.” However, next quarter will be the “real test,” as it comes to tougher comparisons, with the impact of the newly released MacBook Neo considered “critical.” In addition to the quarterly results, Apple upped its quarterly dividend 4% to $0.27 per share. The next payment will be made on May 14 to shareholders of record as of the close of May 11. The board of directors also authorized an additional program to repurchase up to $100B in comm...
