bymuratdeniz S&P Global ( SPGI ) said on Thursday that its unit S&P Dow Jones Indices is considering rule changes for megacap companies seeking to IPO into its indexes. S&P DJI defines megacaps as any company with a market capitalization equal to or greater than the 100th largest company in the S&P Total Market Index. The proposed changes would apply to S&P 500 ( SP500 ), S&P MidCap 400 ( SP400 ), and S&P SmallCap 600 ( SP600 ) indexes. The unit has launched a consultation on proposals that include a modification to the seasoning period. The companies are required to trade on an eligible exchange for at least 12 months before being considered for addition to an index. The proposed changes include cutting the time to six months. Additionally, the index provider is mulling waiving off the minimum 0.10 IWF eligibility requirement and Financial Viability Criteria requirement. The Investible Weight Factor, or IWF, determines the percentage of a company's outstanding shares available for trading in the public market. The Financial Viability Criteria ensures a company is financially healthy enough to be considered a representative of the market. Furthermore, S&P DJI is considering changing the IWF-related rules for companies seeking an entry into the S&P Total Market Index ( SPTMI ), S&P Completion Index (SPCMI), and Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index (DWCF). For companies seeking an entry into the S&P Composite 1500 Index ( SP1500 ), the proposed rule change includes shortening the seasoning period for entry eligibility to six months from 12 months. The consultation is open for public feedback until Thursday, May 28, 2026. The news comes as U.S. regulators try to make IPO and capital raise rules easier for companies by cutting disclosure requirements or accelerating the registration process. SweetBunFactory/iStock via Getty Images Sandisk Corporation ( SNDK ) shares have been on fire this year as the memory shortage that has taken the world by storm has sent NAND prices into the stratosphere. The company is currently well positioned to continue reaping the benefits of this trend, even if the market was not impressed by the Q1 earnings report after the close on Thursday. Data by YCharts I've yet to cover SNDK on its own, but I did previously cover Western Digital ( WDC ) right after its acquisition of Sandisk when I recommended a Strong Buy on market uncertainty at around $46 per share. It ran up to $70 (50%+) a few months later. If you're having trouble remembering these developments, it's probably because Western Digital's acquisition of Sandisk, and the publication of that article, happened back in late 2016, nearly ten years ago. Dropping a link here if you fancy unearthing a fossil. Saying that SNDK has had quite the run over the last 12 months would be putting it mildly— the stock has absolutely exploded from around $33 per share to over $1000, a gain of, give or take, 3000%. The primary driver of this streak has been, as you might have heard, a severe shortage in the supply of memory, leading to what many are calling the RAMpocalypse. A look at spot prices will tell you why: Wccftech High-end DRAM and NAND are sold out for years in some cases, and production lines have shifted to these premium products in response; the result has been a price explosion for memory of all shapes and sizes as supply cannot hope to keep up. However, this environment has been far from an "apocalypse" for the select few companies that are in the memory manufacturing business because business is booming . Micron ( MU ), an American maker of DRAM and NAND, earned $1.91 per share in Q3 2025 and is now projecting more than $19 per share in Q3 2026. Not to be outdone, Sandisk lost $0.30 per share in Q3 2025 and reported $23.41 in Q3 2026. More on this later. People say all t...
