As the Onion waits for a court to approve its takeover, creative director Heidecker previews his ambitious plan to parody the site – already sending Jones into a fury If you’ve tuned in to Infowars over the years, you might have heard a very angry man screaming about the 2020 election being stolen for “ reanimated corpse ” Joe Biden, or chemicals in the water turning frogs gay , or the Sandy Hook school shooting, which killed 20 children and six staff members, being faked. Founded in 1999, Alex Jones’s Infowars has long been a platform for toxic conspiracy theories with real-life consequences, in addition to weird dietary supplements. But if the Onion has its way, the InfoWars of the future will have a very different impact. The satirical newspaper has been working for several years to take over the site, amid legal battles over Jones’s false claims about the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting. Pending a Texas court’s approval, the platform could soon be in the hands of the Onion and a newly installed creative director, comedian Tim Heidecker, known for his surreal sketches and mockery of the far right. The result would be the transformation of a dangerous political weapon into a comedy hub that undermines everything Infowars once stood for. Continue reading...

As the series returns, he talks about marriage, masculinity and meditation Danny Dyer is dressed in white and carrying a huge bouquet of flowers when I drop in on his Guardian photoshoot. “Hello, baby,” he says to me in a voice so bad-boy East End, so fabulously filthy, that he sounds like a parody of Danny Dyer. We’ve never met before, but you wouldn’t guess. Dyer has been in the limelight for 30 years, but never like this. As he approaches 50, he has become a middle-aged heart-throb. The week we meet, he’s on the front of Rolling Stone UK, and he can’t quite believe it. “I’m on it now , as we speak. And the cover before was Timothée Chalamet! Pretty cool! You know, I’ve had a long career and I couldn’t get on the cover of anything till now.” Continue reading...

The king’s US visit reminds me how glorious it would be to live in a country where sunshine is a novelty and For the Love of Dogs is on TV The so-called “special relationship” between Britain and the United States has never seemed more tenuous. At times, it looks like the US-UK alliance is a geopolitical version of a slowly disintegrating celebrity relationship where neither side wants to admit it’s actually over, so someone has to do a crazy thing like cheating in the most high-profile manner possible to wrap things up. Like Klay Thompson (allegedly) stepping out on Megan Thee Stallion , America has been making goo-goo eyes at Israel for the last year, and King Charles is starting to get jealous. So the king popped into the White House for a tour of all the changes Donald and Melania have foisted upon the grounds. Have you seen the gaping hole where the East Wing used to be? And what a hole it is. To your left, you’ll see the beehive. Continue reading...

Government blocks RightsCon 2026 conference saying it did not ‘align with national values’ The world’s largest conference on human rights and technology has been cancelled just days before it was due to start after the Zambian government told organisers it did not align with “national values”. Zambia’s government had originally welcomed the RightsCon 2026 summit on “human rights in the digital age”, due to be held in the capital, Lusaka, on 5-8 May, but Thabo Kawana, permanent secretary for the Ministry of Information & Media, said last week that the conference would not go ahead to allow time to ensure the gathering “aligns with Zambia’s national values, policy priorities, and broader public interest considerations”. Grassroots crowdfunding ensured the book was bought and donated to more than three-quarters of primary schools in England, Wales and Scotland and to every hospice in the country. Continue reading...

Syrian Gets Just Six Months In Jail For Raping 13-Year-Old Girl After Court Cites His Low IQ Authored by Thomas Brooke via Remix News, A 21-year-old Syrian man convicted of raping a 13-year-old Norwegian girl in a bike shed will serve just six months in prison after a court cited his low IQ, limited development, and a recent change in Norwegian sentencing law. Abdelmonem Abdelrazak Al-Yousef was found guilty by Nord-Troms and Senja District Court on March 31 in relation to the rape that occurred during the night of Sept. 7, 2024, near the Harbour Terminal in Tromso. As reported by Norwegian news outlet Document , the teen victim had left her home during the night and gone into the city center. At the Harbour Terminal, she encountered Al-Yousef and another man. The court said there was little conversation because the defendant spoke only Arabic. The court found that Al-Yousef first assaulted the girl on a bench near the Edge Hotel before the abuse continued in a covered bicycle parking area belonging to the Harbour Terminal. He also attempted vaginal intercourse, but the judgment said he did not succeed because the victim did not want to. Al-Yousef, who arrived in Norway from Syria in 2023, initially denied ever meeting the girl and denied being the person seen in surveillance images. He later admitted meeting and kissing her, but continued to deny sexual activity or entering the bicycle area. Police found semen on the asphalt at the scene, and DNA testing linked it to Al-Yousef. The court rejected his defense, noting it was entirely lacking in credibility. The court also found that Al-Yousef should have understood the girl was underage. The victim had said she was born in 2008, while a witness said she appeared visibly young and childlike. In a police interview, Al-Yousef himself said she looked small and around the same age as his younger sister, who was born in 2010. However, the sentence was reduced after forensic psychiatric experts found that he had a mild inte...

The world’s largest container carrier plans a new service linking Europe with isolated Middle East ports, using trucking across Saudi Arabia and smaller vessels in the Persian Gulf instead of transiting the blocked Strait of Hormuz. MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. SA , in an advisory posted on Saturday, said the first sailing would be May 10 from Antwerp, in a loop that also includes stops in Germany, Italy, Lithuania and Spain. Ships will cross the Suez Canal into the Red Sea and visit two ports on the western coast of Saudi Arabia — Jeddah and King Abdullah. From there, the network uses trucks to reach Dammam on the peninsula’s east coast, where feeder vessels would connect to maritime gateways, including in Abu Dhabi and Dubai’s Jebel Ali. Both have large industrial zones with hundreds of multinational companies that rely on containerized cargo which used to freely move through Hormuz. Related: Gulf Trucking Bypass Moves Metal, Consumer Goods Around Strait Traffic through the strait has been severely restricted since the US and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28, with few signs that it’s opening soon. That extended closure is forcing shipping lines to chart land-based alternatives that take longer, cost more and emit more carbon. Ports just outside the strait, in Oman and on the eastern coast of the United Arab Emirates, are also seeing a surge of diverted containers requiring expanded trucking capacity. Hapag-Lloyd AG , based in Hamburg, said in March it established ground transport routes across Saudi Arabia and Oman. Copenhagen-based A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S has also announced multi-modal “landbridge” solutions for cargo across the region. In the advisory, Geneva-based MSC said the offering is in response to growing demand amid the “challenging scenario in the Middle East.” The drive from Jeddah to Dammam — a route that passes through the capital Riyadh — is about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers). MSC’s feeder ships would also reach Bahrain, Iraq and Kuwait.

primeimages/iStock via Getty Images By Seema Shah, Chief Global Strategist Global equity markets have staged a sharp rebound in recent weeks, delivering their strongest monthly performance in several years. The S&P 500 rose 10.5% in total return terms in April, its best month since November 2020. Additionally, despite persistent pessimism around Europe, the Stoxx 600 gained almost 6%, its strongest month since January 2025, while the MSCI Emerging Markets Index soared 15%, its best performance since November 2022. While perhaps surprising, this rally has closely followed the historical playbook for markets after a geopolitical shock. Over the past several decades, U.S. equities have posted an average peak-to-trough drawdown of roughly 7%, bottoming around three weeks after a shock, then recovering over the next three to four weeks. This episode has tracked that pattern closely: the S&P 500 recorded a drawdown of just under 8%, bottomed just under four weeks after the conflict began on February 27, then recovered within another three weeks. Current market landscape: resilience outweighs disruption That markets have adhered so closely to historical precedent, despite the most severe oil supply disruption on record, is striking. At face value, record U.S. equity prices alongside oil above $100 per barrel may appear incongruous. Yet the combination of resilient macro fundamentals, a strong start to the Q1 earnings season, and powerful structural tailwinds, such as the AI investment cycle has sustained investors’ risk appetite. Macro: U.S. labor market data appear to have stabilized. Jobless claims remain low, ADP employment has rebounded, and March payroll growth was the strongest in 15 months. Consumer spending remains resilient, while PMI surveys point to a recent firming in activity. Earnings: Results are materially outperforming expectations. Around 80% of S&P 500 companies that have reported have beaten EPS estimates, with strength evident across multiple sectors. ...
